What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Smaller group than usual today but lots of enthusiasm and group cohesion. Ian had a bunch of Zillow listings and we searched for lots of details about rent, what was included, were pets allowed, etc. We wrote down questions and then asked the group. There was sometimes a bit of confusion when we transitioned from writing the question to asking the question. We also did the housing word cloud. It would be nice if the cloud also included words like “rent” and “monthly payments” etc. Amy from Green Lents came to talk about a fun event at Kelly this weekend. We handed out a flyer and did a listen and point, and then Amy dictated a couple of sentences about the event.Amanda GreenvossSpectatorLesson Title: Unions stand up for worker rights

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Four new learners today! Ian made them feel very welcome and they slid right into the groove of the group. We are having a little trouble coming up with solid activities for the labor unions topic, but spent some reflection time brainstorming possible new activities.Amanda GreenvossSpectatorLesson Title: Be prepared for an emergency

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Ben was supposed to MC today, but was sick and I only found out at the last minute. I didn’t have his lesson plan (and no backup lesson plan). Luckily, Ian was in the office and while I was doing the alphabet sheet and names he gathered some materials to work with. It was a little scattered (and I found myself over-explaining/over-talking without a solid lesson plan in place!), but thanks to Ian I don’t think it was a huge impact on the learners. After the lesson, we discussed the importance of sending out the lesson plan in advance for situations like this, and of possibly having a backup lesson plan to use if all else fails. I DO NOT KNOW what would have done if Ian hadn’t been there to put materials together for me!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Good class – lots of energy. Passed around a lot of items found in a first aid kit – band-aids, gauze, emergency blanket, etc. We decided it might benefit the class if we mixed folks around a bit more – and brainstormed ideas that might be a fun way to do it! People seemed very interested in the first aid kit lists. We wondered if it might be good at the end of the month (or the beginning?) to hand out materials in multiple languages for folks to take home when we are dealing with such important topics!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Great lesson today with lots of class engagement. 11 learners came, which is almost twice as many as we have been getting over the last few weeks. A few people were off visiting family in Vietnam. And Ian made some phone calls last night inviting folks to come back. Whatever the reason, it was nice to see so many people! We talked about earthquakes and how to stay safe. Watched a cute video and did some dictation. We are planning on using some of the same materials again next week to reinforce some of the messages.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Passed around lots of plant parts (root, leaf, berry, bulb, branch, bulb). Did dictation introducing Native Plants. Na’ama had lots of material prepped and we didn’t get to all of it, but this was a good launching place to start and we can use the other items she prepped next week!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): A very small group today, perhaps because the elementary school had a late start day. There were three learners and three kids brought along. We took the learners outside to the Kelly community garden and introduced lots of plants and garden items (garden bed, wood chips, soil, trowel, parsley, kale, artichoke, etc). It was a little difficult to keep the focus because of the children (who were having a great time in the garden but were also a little distracting). Once back inside we worked on more dictation, including “You can grow food in the community garden. Just talk to Ian!”

What happened: Today we tried something a little different. After a long time doing a document search on a page of the “top 14 vegetables”, we did a dictation “Is it a cauliflower?” “Yes it is” “No it isn’t”. Then Ian would pick a vegetable on the sheet and describe it using words on the sheet. “It is high in fiber” and a learner would ask “Is it spinach?” and Ian would say “no it isn’t” then he would go on to give more clues until a learner guessed it right. This was really fun for the higher learners, but we think it might have gone over some of the lower learners’ heads. By the end, some of the higher learners were giving the clues for other learners to guess. Another dictation and dialogue we practiced was: “Excuse me” “How can I help you?” “I am looking for vinegar” “Vinegar is on aisle 5”. We did a document search on another page about retail price versus unit price.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): A good sized group with a lot of variety in language levels. Ian led a very hands-on class, passing lots of food around (“This is Mac and Cheese”) with multiple foods being passed at the same time, which was fun and full of laughter. The document search consisted of an infographic with pictures and words of which foods provide which nutrients, a second infographic about which vitamins effect which part of your body, and then we document searched a nutrition label. After the document search, we put our hands in or out of the table when Ian asked about foods we like (“Do you like avocados?”). We didn’t do quite as much dictation as usual, and on reflection we thought perhaps we would have cut out the second infographic. Everyone seems like they had a good time today! -
