Lesson Title: What do you do for work?
Date of Class: 2/5/20
Day of Class: Wed
Time of Class: 9:30
MC: Amanda
DJ:
Assistants/Shadowers/Auditioner:
Module: Stormwater management
How Many Learners: 1
Materials Status (loyalty cards, alphabet sheets, etc):Self Evaluation
Preparation: Forgot to Show Up (1) vs. Every Hair In Place (10) = 7
Technique: Completely Incompetent (1) vs. Flawless Delivery (10) = 5
Engagement: Snoring Loudly (1) vs. Absolutely Riveted (10) = 6
Connection: Open Hostility (1) vs. Kumbayah (10) = 6
Poise: Charlie Brown (1) vs. Prince (10) = 6
Reflection: “It was ok.” (1) vs. Life-changing Epiphany (10) = 5One learner came about 30 minutes late. His English level is fairly high, so I asked what kinds of things he wants to work on. He told me he would like to be able to speak more about his work. So we ended up dictating a bunch of sentences about his job (electroplating aluminum beams!) and then having conversations about his job. He seemed very animated talking about it, and we worked a lot on pronunciation of certain technical words. After class I worked with the office to get more flyers posted.

Patrik was there and he ran around a bit looking for folks. We ran into one former student and invited him to join again. Patrik found 5 ESL adults in a book club and asked if I could join. I sat in and read Ramona the Pest with them in Spanish. At the end I invited them to English class on Wednesday. We also discussed the possibility of doing a shorter lesson after the book club in the future if I don’t have any other learners show up. They also invited me to come to Cafe espanol next Monday at 9, and to invite learners there.

Reflection: “It was ok.” (1) vs. Life-changing Epiphany (10) = 7What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): First Wednesday 2pm Rockwood lesson of the year. 9 learners, only 4 of which were long-timers, 3 brand new and 2 relatively new. We talked about trees – did a round robin “Did you climb trees when you were little?” “Yes I did/No I didn’t” and then did a listen and find on a page about spruce and fir trees. We then did some dictation of sentences about trees. The new learners started out VERY resistant to some of our methods, but Patrik used all his skills to bring them along, and the most resistant person seemed to be having the most fun by the end! Great first class of the year.

A really nice way to end the year – and the learners all wanted to take pictures all together, which is a good sign they feel connected to the class!

Connection: Open Hostility (1) vs. Kumbayah (10) = 8
Poise: Charlie Brown (1) vs. Prince (10) = 6
Reflection: “It was ok.” (1) vs. Life-changing Epiphany (10) = 7What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This was Daniel’s second “silent lesson” and he did a GREAT job. I can’t believe the amount of prep time he put in. He made gaufrettes (which are a Belgian cookie) and brought all the ingredients and cooking implements needed to make the cookies. We dictated a few sentences about how the gaufrettes are a family recipe and that they make them every year and hang them on their tree. Then we wrote down all the tools and ingredients and round-robined everything. Daniel had printed out SO MANY THINGS to make his silent class run smoother – signs that said “Ready?”, “You got it”, his name spelled out letter by letter, etc. He also had tons of note cards written with the prompts for me to say. The whole thing was rather silly and caused lots of laughter – to the point that when I left, the librarian at the desk said “Sounds like class today was even more fun than usual!”

Time of Class: 2pm
MC: Amanda
DJ: No DJ – MC entered data
Assistants/Shadowers/Auditioner: Heidi, Judy
Module: Health and Social Services
How Many Learners: 11
Materials Status (loyalty cards, alphabet sheets, etc): We could use a new original alphabet sheet – there is only one left and it is clearly the copy of a copy of a copy and looking a little rough.Self Evaluation
Preparation: Forgot to Show Up (1) vs. Every Hair In Place (10) = 8
Technique: Completely Incompetent (1) vs. Flawless Delivery (10) = 8
Engagement: Snoring Loudly (1) vs. Absolutely Riveted (10) = 7

Poise: Charlie Brown (1) vs. Prince (10) = 7
Reflection: “It was ok.” (1) vs. Life-changing Epiphany (10) = 9
What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We did a listen and point of an earthquake word cloud. We then completed a worksheet of 6 items you might need after an earthquake. We named the item (work gloves!) then as a class came up with the reason we might need them after an earthquake (to remove rubble!). After completing all six items, we stood and passed the items around in a round robin (What is this? Its a battery powered radio. Why do I need it after an earthquake? To hear the news if the power is out.) We spent the last 20 minutes completing the library survey.Amanda GreenvossSpectatorSite: Parklane Elementary

Reflection: “It was ok.” (1) vs. Life-changing Epiphany (10) = 7What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We did a listen and point of City of Portland’s “Be Cart Smart” guide. We then did a worksheet with images of different waste items (foil, buckets, plastic bags, yogurt tubs, etc) – we named the items and then used the “Be Cart Smart” guide to decide if we could recycle them or not. Then we did a round robin with the pictures – “What’s this?” “Its a plastic lid.” “Can I recycle it?” “No, its garbage.” One of the learners said they would hang the guide on their fridge, and joked that it should be on the citizenship test. I told them very few Americans would pass that test!

Reflection: “It was ok.” (1) vs. Life-changing Epiphany (10) = 6What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We did a Halloween themed class today. I brought candy to share and we dictated sentences about how kids go door to door to get candy. We looked at images of different classic kid costumes (witch, devil, cowboy, Spiderman, princess etc) and then dictated sentences about them. I then described my costume using those dictated sentences and they would guess who I was. Then each learner stood up and described their costume (using the dictated descriptions) and we would shout “You’re a vampire!” or whatever. This was a lot of fun and everyone caught right on. We had some interesting vocab words (scepter and tiara for the princess, leather chaps and bandanna for the cowboy, etc). We also did a Halloween word search. Lots of fun and laughing.

What did you try? I tried milk duds. What were they like? Creamy and chewy. What was inside? chocolate and caramel. This activity worked really well and everyone had fun with the activity and tasting candy. And we discovered the dislike for candy corn is universal. At the end we did a listen and point of a sheet with survey data on people’s favorite and least favorite candies.

Reflection: “It was ok.” (1) vs. Life-changing Epiphany (10) = 5What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Good day today with three PPT regulars and 3 Parklane parents. We started looking at a “whats in season” calendar for Oregon, and then round robined questions about “What’s in season this month?” and “When are pumpkins in season?” etc. We then used pictures of Oregon Orchard fruits and nuts and round robined them. After that we asked each other “Which of these have you tried?” Finally we had images of apples being sliced, chopped, peeled, stirred, bit, grated, and we did hand gestures for each. Once we all had the gestures down, one learner would stand while the others took turns rapidly giving a new instruction “Chop!” – this worked really well and was a ton of fun. Overall the class was very interactive, and seemed to keep all levels of learners engaged.

The new person had quite high English skills and I found myself a bit challenged keeping him engaged while helping the others who needed a bit more time. Not sure if he will think the class is worth his time… I used pictures of modes of transport and we practiced talking about how we got to the class “I took the MAX” “I biked” “I walked” “I drove” etc. We then looked at the MAX map, and talked about our closest stations. We then wrote and round robined how to get to my closest station from the class “Take the blue line west, and change at SW 5th to the orange line…” Then we picked new locations and gave directions to get there.
