    Poise: Charlie Brown (1) vs. Prince (10) = 6
    Reflection: “It was ok.” (1) vs. Life-changing Epiphany (10) = 6

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Its March, but we used the lesson Kenadi had prepared for last week when we got snowed out. We only had one learner but it went well working with her. Because we also had two shadows, I spent some time talking about the program with the shadows while Kenadi worked 1 on 1 with the learner.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We used an infographic about rights and watched a video and dictated some sentences about rights. The learners started talking about how all of them were citizens, which gave the impression that they understood the materials and that they felt like it didn’t apply to them… I wonder if there are either other rights we should talk about, or if we should use a different module for this group of learners.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We had a very new and hesitant learner who was having lots of trouble with the activities. With some support for Zadok, we dropped the planned lesson and switched to some say and do activities, followed by some very simple round robins “Hello – what is your name – How are you.” The switchup worked very well. Caitlin and I both want to have a few more of those techniques as backup plans in case we run into that situation in the future!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): The library asked us to complete a survey on “Adult literacy programs at the library” so Francine made a whole lesson about it. The class was super engaged today (even on a less than thrilling subject) and everyone was having a good time. We completed the survey with a little help from Ramin with the Russian learners and with Google Translate for the Vietnamese speaker.

We learned and sang “Here comes Santa Claus” and had a REALLY good time doing a memory game with Christmas items. After we played memory twice, we wrote down all the words and then did a round robin with a few “This is a wreath.” A good fun class!

Kenadi printed out a week’s forecast of the weather in Portland, and then we dictated questions and had them find the answer (“is it supposed to rain this weekend?”). After that we had a small end of year party and spent time chatting about children, traveling to Vietnam, and how you invite someone to take food “Please help yourself!” Lots of good connections today!

What happened: We had a really fun class today. We dictated some sentences about Christmas, and then spent a lot of time learning to sing Jingle Bells. First we did Seek and Find with the printed lyrics, then we listened to the song, then we sang without music and then sang with music. The progression worked very well. After that we did a couple of round robins (do you like singing Christmas Carols?/ Can you sing Jingle Bells?) – super fun.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Kenadi did a great job at her dress rehearsal today. We had 5 learners including one brand new learner! The group worked really well together. We ended up spending some time having a group conversation about learning English (started by the learners) which was really nice. I think the new student felt very welcome despite not sharing a native language with any of the other learners and having limited ability to express herself in English.

We focused on Halloween, talking about traditional costumes, practicing Trick-or-treating (and how to greet trick-or-treaters), and dictated some lyrics from “This is Halloween”.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): A good number of learners came today, as well as two new shadows. Learners used their smart phones (and Zoe’s laptop) to do some searches on Google Maps. We looked at what was nearby Rockwood library, and the zoo, and then places other people named and how long it would take to get there. Zoe created a really clever (but simple!) crossword that could be filled out by searching on google maps. Upon reflection, we may have seated folks differently, to have our lowest level learner surrounded by high level learners on the same side of the table.

We said goodbye to Ian – who kindly hung out at Kelly to help any lost learners find their way. Lots of good round robins about housing vouchers and affordable rent, and then we did listen and point on a great infographic about the government subsidizing wealthy homeowners more than low income renters. We finished with some dictating sentences from a video. Jorge from the adjoining office gave us the wifi info so we could show the video: It’s the Century link that ends in 8407 and the password is 6ban87cd33aacx
