Overall, the class went well. The class only had two students, which made it easier to give students personal attention. Julie, Barbara and I had a talk after class about what could have been improved and there were a few things that stood out. Firstly we all agreed that there could have been more variation in the activities we did. While I commend Julie for getting through her entire lesson plan, I would have liked to have seen more activities with illustrations and activities that required students to get out of their seats. Also, one of the learners was struggling with copying and singing the lyrics to the song Merry Christmas which we spent a lot of time on. I think cutting this activity a little shorter would have made the learner feel better about them self and played on some of their other strengths. On another note, I felt that Julie did a very good job stylistically and has improved a great deal since I last saw her teach.

The class was taught very much by the book. I though the students were listening and engaged but it would have been nice if there were more of a variety of activities for students to participate in. I always find it helpful to get students out of their seats and doing something hands on. We spent a lot of time doing activities that were difficult for some learners who almost saw no end in sight while doing them. that is why changing activities up is important, so that every student can try something new and that may fit their interest. It was also unfortunate that we didn’t get to sing Jingle Bells to close the class. I think that would have been a good way for students to go into the holidays and be made aware of the significance of Christmas in the United States.

I felt that the class was well taught and that Ramin did a good job teaching stylistically. However, I also told Ramin to try some refreshing, new and creative activities for next weeks class.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): The class was refreshing and pleasant. The class was smaller than usual because of the frosty weather conditions but the students remained eager to learn. I think the lesson being about geography helped spark their interest because it’s something that the learners have been around their whole lives and I’m sure have learned about in their country of origin.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): The class was interesting. There were about five new students all of whom had solid beginner level English. A few students arrived late and the room was slightly small for the class size but overall, the students were stretched and challenged by the lesson plan and Mary Louise did a good job of keeping students of all levels engaged.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Being a DJ for this class was very exciting for me given that I enjoy new and fresh experiences. This was mine and Patrik’s first time working with this particular group so most things were fairly new for us. I’d never worked with as many Vietnamese learners as I had this evening so it once again broadened my perspective. Patrik made the class fun and engaging by being over the top in his demonstrations and directions and by being welcoming to all of the students.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Today was David’s silent class so I taught his lesson pan while he helped facilitate what went on in the classroom. Bill and Barbara were the assistants for this class and they were extremely helpful. The overall flow of the class was good although students seemed a little more puzzled than usual because of David’s silence. However, once students realized what was going on, they were very open to learning and receptive to my directions. I really enjoyed todays class.

Ramin did a wonderful job of using real world examples for our learners. For example, he brought in sheets of paper that students could look at and identify the various road signs and warnings typically found in the U.S. He also brought in DMV applications and had students identify different words and phrases from the application. Ramin’s energy was fun and made me and the students more engaged in his lesson.

Today’s class overall went well. I was pleased with the lesson plan and material that we would be teaching. Overall, I think students walked away with a better understanding of Native Americans even if it’s just knowing one of the tribal names. On the other hand, I also found assisting with this class to be more challenging than others becAuse I don’t think the students were ready to write and pronounce some of the more complicated tribal names which made them disinterested after tring too hard to understand. Also, I felt as though having that many teachers was confusing and threw me off at times.
