What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): There was only one learner but she worked hard. She arrived 20 minutes late too. I focused on simple small talk dialogues and we worked in being very comfortable using them. She seemed to really enjoy the class and she said that its the first time she hadn’t felt ashamed to speak English.KasPermissionarySpectatorLesson Title: Make Yourself At Home

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): the class was engaged and we used every single minute from beginning to end. One learner was a bit resistant and sassy, but she still participated fully. I wondered if she would return and at the end she said, “See you next Wednesday!” So I count that as a win.
We did the standard warm ups, a document search, a pictionary style game, and filled out a repair request. My technique could’ve used some refining with this particular lesson to have been more effective in the module, but by no means was this a bad class. It was fun and engaging.KasPermissionarySpectatorLesson Title: Preventative Medicine

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We started a little bit late. The classroom was locked and it took a few minutes to get the classroom set up. After began with the standard warm ups and lesson title dictation. We then moved into preventative medicine vocabulary phrases like, I exercise, I eat vegetables, I sleep, I get a massage, etc. We then moved into a document search, then came back to writing with a dialogue that asked, “What do you do to stay healthy?” It turned out to be a great activity that engaged the higher level learners to come up with answers that had not been previously given, like, “I play soccer to stay healthy.” I’m feeling good about my arrangement of learners this time. I had a good spread of higher level and lower level engagement which was great. There were many times when I could just sit back and watch people work together. It was great!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): I had a cold and was pretty wiped out but the class room brought good energy and there was a high level of participation and enthusiasm. The class was engaged throughout and there was plenty of laughter and engagement. My one criticism would be that I should’ve taken grater initiative to re-arrange seating. I had a few too many lower level learners seated on one end of the table. It would’ve been more beneficial to mix things up a bit more than I did -Especially for next week now that I’m a bit more familiar with who is more proficient and who struggles. We did some insurance and health related vocab, a funny dialogue, and a document search in addition to the standard beginning activities.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This class went SOOO well. The learners brought with them a really positive energy when they showed up and they were ready and willing to engage and that made a really big difference. We did a couple dialogues, a document search using a page from the OHP website, and a really fun TPR that got the class engaged and laughing. There was a lot of spontaneity with humor responses in English. The multi-level engagement was really good too. We moved a couple learners around and it seemed to make a pretty big difference.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We had 4 learners today which was great. This was their first time to the Monday Homework Helper class so I was able to use a lot of materials that had been covered in previous classes in addition to the new materials I brought today. They really did an awesome job of working together even though it was their first time meeting each other. They really loved the “This is an apple” game/dialogue. It empowered them to work with the vocabulary we were building through modeling and usage. We also worked with a Willamette Week article again today. It was a slightly lower English fluency class than other classes I’ve taught at Harvey Scott so we were able to spend a little more time working through some of the dialogues, vocabulary, song text etc. than some of the other classes. There was lots of working together, laughter, and flow of energy between class members. The time flew by.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Today there was only one learner in the class. It made revising some of the activities a little challenging, but it also gave a lot of intimate opportunity to chat with one another in a way that larger classes don’t permit. We began with the usual warm-ups and moved on to converse about her kids and school. She doesn’t have much opportunity to speak English because most of her colleagues and coworkers speak Spanish as their first language. She talked about her educational background, her kids, and employment. We then moved on to a document search using an article from WIllamette Week on problems with a standardized test that was being administered. This article proved to be a really great gateway to opening up some of her opinions about the matter. She already had experience with this particular test and some of the content of the article. She started expressing frustration with the school situation, language barriers, the superintendent, and on and on. We talked a lot about what is fair in school for parents, teachers, and students. It was really great because she was using her English to communicate big ideas and things that were important to her even though it was a big struggle. We worked to build confidence in speaking a lot -especially with pronunciation. We also did an activity where we practiced the names of school supply objects (that I both brought and gathered from the faculty room) and practiced writing and discussing their various uses through question and answer. All in all this class was a great experience for building connection and courage to communicate.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This was probably in the top 3 best classes I’ve ever facilitated. OMG it was fantastic. I came prepared with many different activities. We began the class with the standard warm ups and then moved to a document search activity with a recipe I printed from the internet. After that we moved into a Q&A session about the recipe we were examining. First the questions were written, then answered with the learners in a round-robin fashion. Next we did some kitchen vocabulary with 10-15 kitchen items I brought with me. Next we worked on recalling the items. We did a “this is an apple” game. Then I put them all into a large bag and pulled them out one at a time and asked, what is this? They would either look on their paper for the answer or recall from memory. Then I had them ask each other in the same manner taking turns pulling items from the bag and asking, what is this? Then I had a document with pictures of different kitchen verbs. We first wrote down the list of verbs as we looked at each photo on the page. Then we did a document search where I would say the sentence like, “I wash the dishes.” and they would point to the corresponding photo. Then we took a 10 min break. When we returned, we made PB& J sandwiches. First I set out all of the supplies. Then I began with, 1. Open the bag of bread. I had them write it down, and do a choral response. After they delivered a choral response I did step 1. I continued through 12 simple steps to complete the sandwich. Then I had them read each step to one another and act correspondingly to make their own sandwiches -one person making one sandwich at a time. Last, we finished with a TPR using the kitchen verbs we previously used. There was so much engagement and connection. It was really really fantastic. They expressed to me that they had learned a whole lot and had a lot of fun. A very rewarding class.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We started class with the usual warm ups of listen & point, Yell & Spell. The class setting was intimate given that there were only two learners -both somewhat intermediate-level fluency. This allowed for more expansive exploration of language and conversation in some areas that would’ve been more difficult for early beginners. We worked on a few dialogues about school -their children and grade levels. We worked on a document looking at school supplies and becoming familiar with the vocab surrounding school and homework. We then contextualized the vocabulary by speaking about the supplies in usage. For example, “I keep my *textbook* in my *backpack* ” We took turns using the vocabulary and pictures in sentences. Then we played a jeopardy-like guessing game with the same images of school related materials. For example, “This item helps keep my papers together in one spot!” Answer: “Paper clip” or “Briefcase/Portfolio” They really liked this game. Next we did a song, “School Days” which turned out to be a pretty good song for them to learn. We listened to it, wrote the whole song out, sung it a couple times, and then took a break.
After the break, we did a document search with the introduction from a 3rd grade workbook. Next we returned to the school supply document and did a couple round-robin stories with the vocabulary images. They liked this. We made stories about their children by name using the vocabulary images. We returned to the song again, sang it a couple times more, and then did a TPR before closing class.KasPermissionarySpectatorLesson Title: Do you Know About The Constitution

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This class went really well. Arien put a lot of preparation into the lesson plan. He brought a School House Rock video and song and we did several rounds of singing with it. We had several languages and English levels represented in the classroom today. There was a lot of really great learning taking place as the seating and working in pairs/groups was well facilitated despite the potential for struggle. I think understanding the map of the colonies is difficult because 1) it’s significance is difficult to organically and culturally translate as a “real world” material 2) it’s a partial area that seems out of natural geographic context 3) it’s an old political map. Our document search and use of it wasn’t terrible or useless, however it was a bit confusing for some and we just had to roll with it as best we could. All in all, class was well executed and the learners were engaged the whole time.

Sorry for the late update here. Class went well. The 13 colonies content is dense and difficult for learners to understand. Nevertheless, Arien worked really hard on his lesson plan. It was a good opportunity for him to practice time management between activities. We did a lot of writing of dialogues and a document search.

What happened:
Our class filled up slowly with lots of new people filtering in over the first 30 minutes. We had a lot of lower lever learners than normal which made the work go a little slower than normal, but it encouraged a lot of working together. We did several dictations, word scrambles, and worked with Presidents names and their pictures on money. Jane also brought a mechanical Barak Obama doll that spoke quotes from Obama’s speeches. We used it in a dictation.KasPermissionarySpectatorLesson Title: The President of The United States

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): class went really well. I think this mod will have lots of fun activities as we work our way through it. Our learners today were fairly equal in their abilities which made for a lot of positive group work. The class was engaged the whole time. Christine was an absolutely fantastic assistant. She used to teach English in France and was a French teacher in the US for 20+ years. She was a natural in the classroom and thoroughly enjoyed the methods and material. She has very good instincts in the PPT classroom. We did a few new activities with numbers and the pictures on US money. We talked about George Washington, Barak Obama, Abraham Lincoln, and Andrew Jackson.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
This class went exceptionally well in my opinion. I was especially impressed with the multi level engagement. Sometimes I feel like the more advanced learners can get bored or not necessarily getting advanced usage or accent coaching and in this particular class I feel like we were able to get some questions answered for our advanced learners in a way that kept things interesting for them. Jane’s sentence scramble activity continues to be a great multi level activity. It’s something that everyone can participate in and get the right answers. It’s game-like, encourages all levels, and everyone gets a turn. -
