Class went well despite the struggle that this module has been for us. We began with the standard warm up activities – alphabet listen & point, confusable rhythms, yell & spell, etc. We moved on into the lesson title, a Q & A, some dictation, and a new activity that Jane came up with: Sentence scramble. The simple sentence was scrambled with the words out of order. We had to rely on certain clues such as where the capital letter that started the sentence began, and where the punctuated last word was. As a class we put the words in order 1st numbering the words on the board in the order it should go. Then class members took turns writing the sentence on the board with the words in the correct order. This was definitely an intermediate to advanced activity. Fortunately most of the class was intermediate level. It was a little bit easing for the learners because they didn’t have to worry about spelling. They only had to copy the words down onto the board. The first try took me a minute to figure out how best to support the learners. But they all seemed to understand the activity and I was very surprised at how well they could do the word order -a somewhat complex grammatical activity, but they all seemed to get it for the most part. We ended with a TPR.
The classroom environment was very lively and pleasant. Everyone seemed to feel at home. One new learner who came was very well supported and really enjoyed class. I had a great after-class chat with him. He is excited to come back. He only arrived in the US 2 weeks ago.
There’s another learner who has been coming regularly for the last 2 months and had no previous English experience. Today it was wonderful to hear her reading with better pronunciation and confidence than I’ve ever seen. It was very rewarding.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We began the class with the standard Alphabet Listen & Point. Arien did well with it, but naturally is still figuring out his pace and how to read the class in that activity. At the end of class during our follow up, Arien said he was concerned that he was going too fast or too slow at times. Really it was just a matter of getting a rhythm down and knowing when he needs to push forward on his speed and when to change directions – Naturally that will come quick with just a little more time. Arien was attentive to the seating and acknowledging who what sitting where. The class was a little smaller than normal. The tables and chairs were arranged so that everyone was working closely together. There was a little bit of an issue with one slower learner. We worked hard to make sure she was supported well, but we worked to make sure we didn’t draw too much attention to her. Le is a great assistant. She interacted very well with the learners. We moved on and did an activity with map listen and point. We used to state abbreviations map and had Wes and Jane call out state names. We also did a state name vocabulary dictation. On the more difficult state names, Jane spelled out the state names slowly so everyone could get the right answer and/or check their work and share answers. We also did several Q & A dialogues about National Parks/Monuments: The Statue of Liberty, Volcanoes National Park, Arches National Park, Mesa Verde National Park, Rocky Mountain National Park, and Mt. Rushmore. The class enjoyed the photos we used to go with each Q & A. We also did an activity of, “Have you ever been to _____?” with “Yes I have/No I haven’t.” For Arien’s dress rehearsal, it went really well. He was open to allowing his assistants to support him as well as open to reading what the class was offering back. With a little more exposure, I think Arien will be a fantastic asset to PPT. He is very invested in the learners and he wants to do each and every step with dedicated intention and accuracy.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Overall, class went well, but it didn’t go absolutely smoothly. We had to kind of juggle some things. Class couldn’t start on time because the room was occupied by a different activity. We didn’t get started until 12:15/12:20. Over all, it was a learning experience for me and Jane to work together. On one hand we want Jane to be the best she can with what she can do and we both are trying to explore more ways to expand her role. We struggled in executing some modified activities. Yell & spell we tried saying all the letters of the names without the repeat of letters and just have the choral response of names. It was confusing for the learners because of the expectations of this activity that had been set previously. We discussed ideas of how we can do better next time. We also had some confusion around the classroom set up and supplies -it was missing the board which we needed for a word scramble game.
That being said, we did a pretty good job of rolling with it. The dialogues were great. and we continued working on This Land Is Your Land -which the class seems to really enjoy overall. All learners were well supported and worked together to get through the activities.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This was my no-lesson-plan class. It went really well actually. After the standard round of warm up activities of Alphabet Listen & Point and Yell & Spell, we used materials from previous weeks including a listen and point activity with the brochures we received from Ivy. We also did dialogues around parks and hiking and nature. We worked with nature vocabulary and asked questions like, “Do you like wildlife?” with responses of “Yes I do, no I don’t.” Despite this being one of my no-lesson-plan classes, it went really well.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Class went really well. Jane came very well prepared. The two of us had a great balance and ability to communicate as a team. The class environment was productive throughout. We had varied levels in the classroom. Arien was a fantastic assistant. If he decides to stick around, he will undoubtedly be an asset to PPT. One learner in particular struggled with fear of speaking but we all tried our best to make her feel comfortable. After the usual rounds of warm ups, we did a listen and point game with the maps of the US states and abbreviations. This activity is great for helping learners know the names and pronunciation of states, their geographic location on a map, as well as become familiar with their abbreviations. We also did some dialogues. It was a great class.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): It was a diverse class with many different language groups and English levels represented. At times it made dialogues more difficult because coaching individuals through the simple dialogues sometimes took awhile. There was plenty of laughter between folks as they dialogued though. We did the standard warm up activities, practiced ordinals, made some dialogues, and worked with listen & point on a map of the local area. The class went well despite my cold and Brooke having an injured back. It made keeping a high energy level a bit challenging, however, we were lucky that the class members arrived with a relatively high energy level to begin with.

This was Ramin’s 2nd silent class. Again, we were able to work together successfully to facilitate a great class despite Ramin’s silence. We began the lesson with the standard activities and moved on to a “This Is An Apple” activity with holiday themes. We also did an activity where we wrote holiday greeting cards and went over how to address them. We finished with the song “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town.”

This was Ramin’s first silent class. He came very prepared with a solid lesson plan. We worked together to facilitate a successful class. We began with the standard lesson activities. We next moved into a listen-point activity. We went over an image with several holiday words artistically arranged. We also did an activity where we talked about what kind of items we might want for Christmas. We ended with Frosty The Snowman. Despite Ramin’s silence we were able to facilitate a great class. Ramin was able to effectively keep me focused on the PPT methods and appropriate facilitation and direct the class.

Class went well. There was a whole lot to be managed in this particular class. There were many different levels and each student had different needs. Understandably, this is something that can be challenging to manage. Ramin and I were well aware of the student’s needs though and despite the challenge, there was plenty of banter and engagement. The new module was particularly challenging since it was new territory. We pulled a few books from the library and used the illustrations and old photographs to explore pieces of history. It soon became apparent that simply because we were talking about the past, out-dated lifestyles, the concepts, and associated vocabulary was interesting and relevant. The class seemed to find it very interesting despite the broad over-arching module topic seemed heavy/dense to us at first glance.

Class went well. All levels were appropriately challenged. After warm up activities we did price dictation and a few two sentence dialogues. After that we did a word search with advertisements. We had one new learner who spoke English very well, but was unable to read or write. It was difficult to break her sense of shame for struggling to write and to get her actively participating with the others, but she responded well to reassurances and positive reenforcement. I hope she comes back.

Then we discussed ailments and used a bunch of pictures to match those ailments -headache, stomach ache, etc…
