What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We discussed the state flower, tree and what it meant to have symbols that represent your country, state or city. We followed the basic lesson plan and also had food. We also talked about what the learners cities/regions were “known for” and explained the meaning of that English phrase. As we discussed the things their areas are known for we realized that one of the learners (Irma) is from a part of Mexico where only a small remaining group still speak the original language. She didn’t know/learn Spanish till she got older and still speaks this native language because her husband is from the same area.

There was a video about how to be prepared and the myths of preparation and also a little game about what to put in to an emergency kit. One of the learners had a pocket knife which was a new item for some in the room. We were able to use it as an example to introduce a real world item to some of the learners.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): The lesson was about shopping and it went very well. All of the standard lesson plan parts were followed and everybody participated and there was a lot of laughing and fun throughout the lesson. The dialogue was good and we did it at a regular speaking tempo then slowed it down to show the difference in sound. We also switched parts so that they got to hear both English speakers doing both parts of the dialogue. Its always interesting that some of the large words they can spell w/o assistance but have trouble with things like (for, have, a, the, til) We then did a document search using a Walgreens coupon paper and they did really well, we also talked about “reading the fine print” for coupons. Ethan had a word scramble and fill in the blank exercise that was really good and could have been used in many ways, but we didn’t do it because the way he had intended required having pre-printed the word scramble so they could figure out how to do it. We still had enough to do and he can recycle the activity many times over for different lessons.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):

Well this was an interesting topic to tackle. WE all felt that it was difficult to discuss as a conversational theme depending on the context that the learners would have. Nonetheless the MC did a nice job of tackling it and we agreed that it was easier for her to do this because it was less emotional for her than if it had been women’s suffrage which was easier for me to tackle. We went through the standard lesson plan and all the assistants took turns calling out letters at the beginning portion of the lesson. We were all very busy helping with the dialogue and everybody seemed to be engaged in the entire lesson. After the dialogue and practice with it we watched a video several times then the learners wrote down words or phrases that stuck out to them. Each learner offered those to the class and facilitated the repeating of them so that everybody was able to get the information written down. We also did some of the work moving around a bit so that the energy didn’t drop. At the end we took time to break up into small groups and do a conversation round about anything that people wanted to discuss and talk about.

We went through the regular lesson plan format and spent a lot of time on the dialogue. The conversation was about asking a repair man to come and fix a refrigerator. The group was very good about working with each other to help with the large/challenging words. We did a lot of repetition and then each person had a chance to practice the dialogue with the person next to them. Once we finished this we played a version of memory using the words that had been used in the dialogue. The group kinda made up their own rules on how to play memory which was different than what we usually do, but they all seemed to go with it and the teacher was very patient to let it take on its own feeling. There were also some new learners who were hesitant to speak at all during the dialogue but the teacher was patient till they were ready to participate fully. There was a lot of laughing and joking during the memory game, everybody was fully engaged in that. From there we moved to a physical activity where everybody was up and moving acting out words and actions as directed by the MC.

Today’s class was a lot of fun. Everybody was really into the topic and there was a lot of back and forth comparison from what what done in English and how it might correspond to the culture of the learners. The teacher used lots of props which always makes the lesson more interesting. We began by going through a recipe for mashed potatoes which in itself was interesting because it was way different than any typical recipe that I’ve seen, which also allowed for some banter and fun in the discussion. We did a document search and the group was very good about helping each other find the words. We also pointed out that sometimes people say mash rather than mashed for potatoes and that one fourth a cup and quarter cup are two ways to say the same thing. After the document search we played a game with some food pictures to say I love, like or dislike the item pictured. After this we again went through the recipe and asked out the individual parts of it. Each learner had a chance to perform a piece of the recipe.
