What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Tonight was the first class at Kinnaman. Zadok explained at the beginning how we point to the alphabet sheets as he says the letters. Then he emphasized the importance of repeating ready after he says it. Then we read about the true meaning of Columbus Day and watched a short video on it through the lenses of the indigenous people whose ancestors came before Columbus. We wrapped up the class with show and do.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): After the alphabet sheet, names, and the title of the day’s lesson, we labeled pictures of injuries (swollen ankle, ear infection…) and practiced a short dialog of a conversation between a doctor and patient. Added to that was choral response. The class also did a listen and do activity where they pointed to body parts (head, shoulders, knees, toes…).

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This lesson was sort of difficult to work with. We did the letters, yell and spell and then word find with a document which was an article. They learners seemed to enjoy the competitive nature of finding the words and phrases and most of them were able to find them fairly quickly. The dialogue worked well and we used a question and answer format for each of them. Talking about the article was a bit challenging, but we finished with writing questions that connected to a map and then they asked and answered the questions for each other. The goal was to get them better connected and informed about where they all came from. Everybody in this class was Mexican.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Started off with alphabet, hit the title, and proceeded to introduce a sphygmomanometer. After that, Grace introduced the pain indicator sheet and we practiced some common physical therapy movements with two PT students. Some volunteers from the PTO came into the class afterwards to help talk about opportunities to get involved with the school.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We spent our time on a recipe for pumpkin pie. We started with the usual letters and and name spelling then went to the pie recipe. We began with dictation of the top part of the recipe and noticed things like the various ways to say 1/4 and thoughts on some of the pie ingredients like pre-made verses homemade crust. After the dictation and staying the various dictated statements we went to document search for the bottom half of the recipe. After doing the document search we did some Q&A around the items that were a part of the search. Everybody seemed to be really into it and there was a lot of conversation and cross talk happening. We finished with action words that were a part of the recipe and physical demonstrations of those words then they were called out and people had to do them as they were called. This was the most fun of the entire lesson because the learners really had a good time with it and it felt like it could be turned into a pie recipe version of Rock Paper Scissors, which I might actually steel for a lesson at another site. This was a great way to start this section.

Today’s class was a lot of fun. Everybody was really into the topic and there was a lot of back and forth comparison from what what done in English and how it might correspond to the culture of the learners. The teacher used lots of props which always makes the lesson more interesting. We began by going through a recipe for mashed potatoes which in itself was interesting because it was way different than any typical recipe that I’ve seen, which also allowed for some banter and fun in the discussion. We did a document search and the group was very good about helping each other find the words. We also pointed out that sometimes people say mash rather than mashed for potatoes and that one fourth a cup and quarter cup are two ways to say the same thing. After the document search we played a game with some food pictures to say I love, like or dislike the item pictured. After this we again went through the recipe and asked out the individual parts of it. Each learner had a chance to perform a piece of the recipe.

This was the first class that a male came to that I have seen at Kinnaman. The male learner was less animated during the the listen and do activity, spoke quieter during choral response exercises. Several of the learners stayed afterwards to chat with each other- something I have seen at Kinnaman recently.November 23, 2015 at 8:11 pm #6967Grace DilworthSpectatorCopy the text below and paste into a comment, then fill it out! First they wrote the voacb down, then we made hand signs for each one. Then I had the words written down on cards and we played the game “memory” with them. We ended with a conversation about setting up for thanksgiving.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): The lesson was about shopping and it went very well. All of the standard lesson plan parts were followed and everybody participated and there was a lot of laughing and fun throughout the lesson. The dialogue was good and we did it at a regular speaking tempo then slowed it down to show the difference in sound. We also switched parts so that they got to hear both English speakers doing both parts of the dialogue. Its always interesting that some of the large words they can spell w/o assistance but have trouble with things like (for, have, a, the, til) We then did a document search using a Walgreens coupon paper and they did really well, we also talked about “reading the fine print” for coupons. Ethan had a word scramble and fill in the blank exercise that was really good and could have been used in many ways, but we didn’t do it because the way he had intended required having pre-printed the word scramble so they could figure out how to do it. We still had enough to do and he can recycle the activity many times over for different lessons.
