What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We spent our time on a recipe for pumpkin pie. We started with the usual letters and and name spelling then went to the pie recipe. We began with dictation of the top part of the recipe and noticed things like the various ways to say 1/4 and thoughts on some of the pie ingredients like pre-made verses homemade crust. After the dictation and staying the various dictated statements we went to document search for the bottom half of the recipe. After doing the document search we did some Q&A around the items that were a part of the search. Everybody seemed to be really into it and there was a lot of conversation and cross talk happening. We finished with action words that were a part of the recipe and physical demonstrations of those words then they were called out and people had to do them as they were called. This was the most fun of the entire lesson because the learners really had a good time with it and it felt like it could be turned into a pie recipe version of Rock Paper Scissors, which I might actually steel for a lesson at another site. This was a great way to start this section.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): we worked on the basic lesson plan and played a game of Simon says with body parts which was easy for some and tricky for others due to the Simon says part, but people overall enjoy doing games and participate as much as they can. We also spent time helping with pronunciation of difficult words so when they came up Owen went around and asked for the learners to say the specific words. The dictation went well and everybody was working together. Simon is the quickest in the room and usually gets things right on the first try with only minor mistakes so usually we check his first and then make the small corrections and he jumps in to help the others sitting around him so that usually takes in 5-6 people. This allowed Owen and I to work with the rest of the class that was having a bit more difficulty.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We worked with writing and the first 10 amendments. We also noticed that there were 3 different ways to write number and discussed that a bit to show that there are several different ways to come up with the right answer. We listened to a rap about the Bill of Rights and then everybody shared phrases that they were able to pick up from the song. We talked about specific words that were important and answered questions that the learners raised.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This lesson was sort of difficult to work with. We did the letters, yell and spell and then word find with a document which was an article. They learners seemed to enjoy the competitive nature of finding the words and phrases and most of them were able to find them fairly quickly. The dialogue worked well and we used a question and answer format for each of them. Talking about the article was a bit challenging, but we finished with writing questions that connected to a map and then they asked and answered the questions for each other. The goal was to get them better connected and informed about where they all came from. Everybody in this class was Mexican.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This was a very interesting lesson. There were several hands on items that were used to ask the question (is this an emergency?) We went through the normal routine items of letters and yell and spell then the learners were shown various items and asked to write the names of them then we passed them around and talked about their uses. We then asked questions about when to use each item. Some were familiar with the items and for some of them the items were new.

We did a game like pictionary and then one that was similar to concentration because they had to remember things in a specific order, we also did a game where a type of food was called out and they had to go to a corner of the room that represented that food. It was very interesting that we had a bit of trouble spelling tomato. Seems that some folks think it has an (e) on it so I looked it up and didn’t really find anything that had an oe other than when it was possessive as in tomatoes. Everybody enjoyed the class and had a lot of fun

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):

We started with the alphabet sheet and during the process the MC made the DJ aware that they should not be repeating things after the MC but that the MC should be the only one speaking for this exercise so that the learners are focused on his/her voice and the MC can tell who is understanding or not, if the sequences need to be repeated or reviewed then the MC handles that. We then went to names and added the addition of last names to the mix so that people learned each others first and last names. From this we went to dictation and at that point the DJ and volunteer were asked to repeat dictation phrases and assist with that. There was a lot of choral response and then going around to each learner to give them the chance to ask the question or answer it. We then made a circle and did a body part exercise and followed that with a song that connected to the motions. This was also done towards the end of the class with the change of pointing to a part but naming it something else to see if the learners were paying attention and could catch the “mistake” we also did some general word actions and also an exercise that physically demonstrated behind, in front of , next to, etc. I thought this was an interesting exercise that could be used with many variations. When they were seated we did a document search exercise which became a small competition to see who could find words first and everybody seemed to be having a lot of fun with that. We finished with some more physical activity and a string of verb acting and movement. This class used a lot more physical activity learning than I had seen in other classes which I thought was an interesting method.

I followed the lesson plan that I had and talked about both parties. Also explained that these were basic descriptions and that they are not always exact and that there is no rule about being one or the other. They seemed interested in the fact that nobody could be compelled to say which party they are in or that you didn’t have to tell anyone who you voted for even if they asked. We did the listed dictation activity and document search for the chart that was provided. We ended the class with some conversation and the prompt was to tell something about the political system they came from. Some shared a lot of information about the system and the members who make it up, others explained a simple item and one person shared what she was proud of about the way her system worked. Everybody got a chance to share and the one student who has difficulty sharing was able to ask a question to Jana and me about what we thought was important about our system so I thought that was a way to demonstrate learning because she was using the words she heard to ask us a question since she didn’t feel that she had the words to explain her system. The one person who was new was not sure at first about staying but did stay for the entire class and said that she did learn some things.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This was Cindy’s dress rehearsal lesson. I can’t remember what the title was or if it was given, but the lesson went well. There were only 4 learners and 1 new person. Everybody seemed to enjoy what was going on and the lesson employed writing several sentences referencing countries and what you called the person from the country. Cindy used the same sentence structure for each one, which I thought was a really good idea because the learners got practice with spelling words and had a sense of accomplishment by knowing what was coming up and could complete it ahead if they were more advanced, but they still had to wait for a new element with each sentence and that was a good challenge. After the lesson the class had 5 minutes of free conversation which was a lot of fun. The group seems to be bonding as a group of learners and would like to have a social gathering. We usually have a difficult learner in each session, but this time we did not. One person came to volunteer/shadow, but she seemed to feel that she should wait and seemed to be expecting Patrick to be there for some reason. She said she’d call him later.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): There was a total of 5 activities for the lesson. Priya discussed with us that she was switching activity 3 and 4 to break up the sitting and writing time which worked well. WE began with the alphabet combinations and then each of the assistants took a turn calling out the letter and number combinations. From there we went to the second activity which was the lesson title and writing the list of items that supported the title. The class level was a bit lower than normal so it took a bit to get everyone in sync with the writing but everyone participated. Some of the assistants altered words for students who were not able to process the spelling of bigger words. From this activity we went to a listen and do activity which required the learners to act out specific statements tha were made like raise your hand, stomp your feet, etc. Several learners were interested in the exact meaning of stomp so this was probably a new word and interesting that the native English speakers sometimes had a bit of difficulty easily defining a word that we completly understood.

After some physical activity we went to the small discussion roleplay where photos of people or places that were important to identifying the USA were presented and then there was a brief discussion on it. Since this started with some difficuty we went to an activity on names so that everyone knew each other then we went back to the picture/discussion roleplay which went much better at this point. Everyone participated well and some of the learners were able to modify the sentences in the roleplay which demonstrated that they had an understanding and could manipulate the language. We used this actiivity until the last 15 minutes of class and then broke up into groups of learners and assistants to have conversation practice. This is the second time that I have seen this done and the learners really seem to enjoy having time to demonstrate other language knowlegdge that they have in addition to getting to know others. The learners in my group found that they shared some commonalities and used them as an opportunity to get names and contact information and to invite each other to do things like get coffee or shop at a particular cultural store.

After class was dismissed, learners continued to linger and discuss things with each other and the DJ, MC and assistants processed the class paperwork.
