The adult was actually mostly pre-literate and was receptive to one on one support for writing. Lesson involved practicing numbers, abbreviations commonly used in addresses, listen and do with cardinal directions, and dictating locations and addresses of free English classes.

This required a lot of adaptation from the MC, who lead us through a lesson plan about nontoxic cleaners. A highlight was Bingo cards that the class filled out via dictation of nontoxic cleaning items, with a real life model of the item shown to the class by the MC.

Other than that, we did a listening activity then document search with a song, vocabulary dictation around pharmacy/medical words, and ended with a fun game of Bingo that used the same vocabulary. Three new learners, and I noticed a few regulars who are normally receiving help becoming helpers to new learners.

This led to a dialogue where one person role played doctor and the other patient. Each speaker had 3 lines but the learners stayed engaged during dictation and round robin of the dialogue. One new learner who struggled at first but caught on with help from other learners.

There was also another group of 3 first-time attendees plus 3 children. The allotted 20 chairs for the room were full so 3 other learners who arrived after the start were not able to stay. Despite so many first time learners the class picked up on the exercises and helped one another through the activities. Sofia facilitated a great lesson about pollen and allergies.

The learners were eagerly using their phones to look up terms like measles, breathing tubes, outbreak and appeared engaged. There were a few times when words in the dictations appeared difficult for the learners so the MC would find someone who had written it correctly and have them write it on the board. One new learner showed up partway through class.

She made a document for listen and point about living holiday trees. Other elements included dictation and round robin dialogues. Learners seemed engaged and challenged by spelling less familiar words within the dictation like “excessive” and “environment.”

At times it felt like a slog to get through the survey but the learners were rather focused and engaged (with some new folks using translate features on their phone). What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We realized while setting up that we had miscommunicated (this was entirely my fault) about who was MC and who was DJ. Vanesa ended up adapting at the last second to use the lesson plan I had prepared so that she could incorporate guest Yolanda (Portland Crime Prevention Coordinator) who had come specifically to share program information with learners. Activities focused around Crime Prevention resources, and 911 and the non-emergency line. Learners got to take home a magnet and a 911 sticker that were used in class.

Daniel used the event flyer and a video in the lesson. There were 2 new learners. We took a little more time to debrief the dress rehearsal, which overall was quite smooth.
