What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
The lesson focused on hazelnuts and facts about hazelnuts. We did a word document search with detailed information about hazelnuts. We also did dictation progression and round robin dialogue. Mike brought hazelnuts to pass around and eat, along with rice cakes and Nutella. Yum! We took a few minutes to stretch and point to various directions. The class was engaged and seemed to work together well.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
The learners were introduced to what to do in case of an emergency, including an earthquake. Sentences were dictated regarding emergency and non-emergency contact numbers. The class watched the video: Drop, Cover, Hold On! Then a dialogue was dictated, followed by a round robin of an example conversation with a 911 operator. The learners seemed to enjoy the challenge and joked with each other, swapping names when one of the questions asked: “What is your name?” The class ended with a document search of an earthquake preparedness checklist. A good turn out and nice class today.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
Today was Joseph’s Silent Class. During Alphabet Listen & Point and Yell & Spell, he used index cards with the letters. He pointed to the letters as Cheryl called them out. Cheryl dictated the “Today’s Lesson Is Called . . . ” activity from Joseph’s lesson plan. Joseph passed out summer roll recipes. Cheryl encouraged the learners to say, “Take one, pass it down.” Joseph and Cheryl modeled the round robin, passing around ingredients to the recipe. “This is a lime.” “A what?” “A lime.” “Oh, a lime.” Joseph who is most likely good at charades showed rather than told the dialogue. Joseph then demonstrated the recipe with Cheryl describing his actions and encouraging a choral response. “He is peeling the lime.” “He is mixing the ingredients.” And so on. This was followed by a Word search puzzle with vocabulary from the recipe. Joseph led a Listen and Do, demonstrating verbs associated with cooking and eating. Finally, we ended the class with a combined document search, choral response and having the learners individually repeat the sentences. It was a challenging and fun class!

It was a fun class today. The learners seemed to enjoy it and interacted well. The dictation challenged them with numbers when giving facts about Crater Lake. The activities were competitive and fun. The learners had to find the cards from the stack in the center of the table which had the correct answers to the questions asked by the MC. This reinforced the dictation. They did a document search on a Word Cloud which included words and pictures. They also divided into teams to play Scrabble to reinforce the words from the Word Cloud. The learners and helpers seemed to enjoy themselves and laughed together.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Maureen brought in fun visual aids: A real puffer fish, a six-inch paper Pygmy Owl and a book with a picture of the owl. She also brought a small zip-lock bag of paper clips to demonstrate the weight of the owl (70 grams). It helped us all get a better grasp on the size and weight of the owl. Amazing! The class seemed to work well together during the dictation progression and other activities. The learners especially enjoyed the last activity which involved spelling vocabulary words from the lesson using Scrabble pieces. The group broke into two teams and joined into the competitive spirit.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
Today’s lesson was especially fun. Monica, the coordinator of Nadaka Nature Park, visited the class. In fitting with the Animals Adapt module, she brought a variety of animal pelts and skulls to pass around, along with colorful butterflies. One of Monica’s summer work interns also attended the class. She joined the other learners and took part in the class activities. She seemed to especially enjoy the round robin demonstrated by her expressive, “Whaaaat?” She laughed a lot and had Monica and Patrik laughing along with her. The other learners appeared engaged as well. It was interesting to see how the PPT approach could be adapted to fit the guest’s presentation and resulted in a fun and effective class.
