A generally good mood and learners were actively helping each other. A few new faces and a guest appearance by Patrick who was shadowing.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We started as a small group with somewhat low energy but that increased as people trickled into the room. We wound up with a decent sized group of 13 – we thought it might be smaller because of the class time change. We moved a couple learners around to facilitate partnerships between lower and higher level learners, and that worked really well. We had a couple new learners who caught on quickly and were active participants in class.

Conducted alphabet listen and point, name yell and spell, and sentence dictation about today’s lesson. Students wrote directions for making a smoothie as Liz dictated. Students were then directed to give me (Maureen) commands to make the smoothie such as: “Add soymilk, put in fruit,” etc. Liz and I passed around the finished smoothies–everyone partook except Abeda. Students participated in a Round Robin about their berry eating tendencies. Class finished with a seek and find followed by a round robin pertaining to the parts of a berry. We learned that the Spanish word for bone and pit are the same. Makes sense!!!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Estefania started the class with alphabet listen and point, name yell and spell, and dictation progression of the name of the lesson. She then did a dictation progression with election and voting related vocabulary, after which students paired up to practice dialogues on themes related to the day’s topic (such as voting, ballot measures, political parties, and more). After rotating through the dialogues, each group performed one dialogue aloud for the group. Estefania then lead a word search using a fact sheet on voter turnout demographics, and finished the class with a modified word search activity where learners were given a sample ballot and asked to find and vote for a particular person or party.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We took the class on a walking field trip to Rockwood Central Park. Choral response & “This is an apple” exercises at stops along the way. Listen & Do with pointing at park features, “This is an apple” with objects Megan brought. Water & snack. The small group size required some improvised re-working of the lesson plan but ultimately allowed us to work more closely with the 3 learners who attended.

Joseph facilitated alphabet listen and point and yell and spell. He dictated: “Today’s Lesson is called: Strawberry Fields Forever. He then scattered a bag of dominoes all over the table to the delight of the students. He asked the learners to pick only the 5’s, etc and make their own “stash.” They were very competitive. The next sentence dictation matched the activity; for example: Simon, Iryna and Anastasiia picked the most. The lesson may have been lost on many of the learners, but a few asked us about the poverty line. Joseph showed a video of “Strawberry
Fields Forever” and we greeted a brand-new student.

We nearly lost Abeda as she was tired and afraid the walk would be too hard on her as she is currently fasting. Abeda was a trooper though and decided to join the group. During the lesson we learned to identify various items in the park (Douglas Fir tree, drinking fountain, rotting tree stump), passed around objects that Ivy had brought ( frisbee, sunscreen) that one might bring to the park to identify them. On the way back, Ivy shared a big box of fruit-nut bars.
