Preparation: Forgot to Show Up (1) vs. Every Hair In Place (10) = 7
Technique: Completely Incompetent (1) vs. Flawless Delivery (10) = 6
Engagement: Snoring Loudly (1) vs. Absolutely Riveted (10) = 5

    Poise: Charlie Brown (1) vs. Prince (10) = 6
    Reflection: “It was ok.” (1) vs. Life-changing Epiphany (10) = 6

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We had 5 facilitators for 9 learners so I felt good knowing people were getting individual attention and guidance. The 4 shadowers asked learners if they could record the audio during class and all the learners approved. Pretty heavy material but I think all of the images and videos were helpful for the learners. I like to show videos but it’s pretty crappy on a small laptop with low volume. Maybe I’ll look into the possibility of checking out a projector next time I want to use a video.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): The class size was small but fun, most of them were higher level so we got to dive deep into the material. I used the Ingles Para La Jardineria packet I found in there and that was cool because I was able to translate certain words for them. Two of the students went to the VOZ Planting. They said they had fun and would go again!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Had a class of 9 students with 4 shadowers, and 2 facilitators. A lot of shadowers but this only meant that each student was able to get more attention. Purfe is super low level so he always needs a buddy or needs to have sentences pre-written for him. He was slowing up the class a bit. It was a good class.

I totally went off track of my lesson plan because they were so curious about many of the abbreviations and symbols on the 10-day forecast handouts. I went in depth about N, E, S, W and all of the abbreviations associated with understanding a weather report. I had them do Round Robin with questions about the actual weather for the next week. Ashley and Rachel met up with Patrik and 3 learners 5 before 3pm at Oregon Zoo on a Tuesday afternoon. The zoo was empty so it was easy for Patrik to spot us outside the entrance when we arrived, which was great since we didn’t have tickets on us. Patrik showed us into the zoo and handed us tickets. There were 3 facilitators and 3 learners so Patrik paired us all up with one learner and encouraged one-on-one conversation. We walked over to the education center and explored all of their educational boards, activities, and their insect room. After one hour of exploring, we met up with Jennifer and Rachel, two of the education coordinators from the zoo. They were able to ask both the facilitators and the learners what they liked and if there was anything we didn’t like, and what needed improvement. After we talked with the zoo people for a few minutes, we continued the learning with a focus on bioswales, ecoroofs, native trees, and native plants. We ended the event at 5pm.

    Things we liked
    – The one-on-one partnering with the learners was a great way to maximize engagement with each member and tailor the activities to the learners English level.
    – Appreciated all of the signage outdoors in the garden area
    – The amount of time was nice because we didn’t feel rushed

    Things we didn’t like
    – Signs next to insect cages/tanks were very small, maybe hard to read
    – Would have been nice to have real animals/leaves/etc next to signs regarding the topic (For example: they had an entire wall of signage dedicated to educating people about turtle rescue, but there were no turtles

    Advice for future
    – Facilitators given tickets/access to zoo prior to excursion to assess all of the possible materials they can use
    – More interactive connection? Viewing animals and reading the signs in front of where they are

We did alphabet sheets for 15 minutes. We went around the room doing yell and spell with names. We dictated the title of the lesson “Singing songs about apples.” I played the class a song about an apple tree. We dictated the first 4 lines of the song, I played back the song after we dictated each sentence. We did listen and point with a tree wordcloud. We did a red robin question, “Do you have a tree in front of your home?” We ended the class with a listen & do.
