We did the alphabet listen and point for the first 15 minutes of class. We went around the room and did yell & spell with names. We dictated the title of the lesson “It’s Tax Season.” We did a dialogue with “What is the title of today’s lesson?” “The title of today’s lesson is called it’s tax season.” We dictated 6 phrases/words associated with taxes. We did a a document search with an article about Tax Day and why it is on the 18th of April. After we completed the document search, we all took turns reading one sentence each from the article. We did a call & response dialogue about where to file taxes. We used a Sample 1040EZ and practiced filling it in, using Santa Claus as the person filing. We ended class with Ashlyn introducing her flyer to the class and conducting a word search with the document.

We began the class by doing the alphabet listen & point for 15 minutes with two learners. We did yell & spell with names. We dictated the title of the lesson “Where do I send it?” At 6:30pm, 3 new learners joined us. We did listen and point using a credit card application and using a map of portland’s zip codes. As a class, we each got to write on an envelope as if we were applying for a credit card by mail to the credit card company. We did “This is A” activity using pictures of landmarks to talk about places near the Gresham Library. We did a listen & point with a map of the location in which Gresham Post Office is found.

A student and I began class with alphabet listen and point. Name yell & spell. We dictated the title of the lesson “W-2 Forms.” We dictated several words & phrases related to W-2’s and taxes: federal, state, file, april 18th, income, refund, social security number. Two more students joined at 6:30pm. We dictated several sentences. We did listen & point using a fake w-2. We read a printed info sheet about W-2’s from Turbo Tax. We ended with a round robin “Have you completed your tax return for this year?”

We dictated trimmed announcement. We did round robin with “Did you ride the MAX today?” We did listen and point using the trip-met map and had learners choose something for everyone else to find. We did round robin again with question about the MAX. We did listen & do with transit. We ended the class with open forum for anybody who had questions about how to spell certain words or say certain words.

Estefania was stuck at the transit center because the MAX stopped running. I taught the first portion of her lesson plan. We started with alphabet, listen & point. We did names yell & spell. We dictated the title of the lesson and went around in a circle asking one another what the title was. We dictated 6 words and phrases related to the first amendment. We did a round robin dialogue about the womens march. We did word search listen and point with a first amendment fact sheet. We dictated a video and then watched it.

We did “This is A” activity using Valentine’s Day material: Picture of cupid, candy hearts, valentine’s day card, box of chocolates, bag of chocolates. We watched the Valentine’s Day Card video. Estefania and I then lead the Valentine’s Day card activity by saying an action, doing the action, and then we had them say and do the action. We finished the class with Valentine’s Day bingo.

We dictated the title of the lesson “Today’s lesson is called We All Need Help Sometimes.” We did dictation progress with 3 different sentences: 1) Immigration law is very complicated 2) Don’t be afraid to ask for help 3) Organizations exist to help non-citizens. We did listen and point using a “If You Are Arrested” worksheet. We did a dialogue dictation progression: A- Sign here please. B- I’m sorry, I need to speak to a lawyer first. 3) It will be easier if you sign now. 4) I won’t sign without talking to a lawyer. We did a stand up & point drill and pointed to various cities, states, countries, and rivers/oceans. We did a listen and point using immigration legal services worksheet. Did a Listen & point activity with a “Know your rights” handout and looked up 9 different words. We dictated 3 different dialogues and all took turns asking one another questions. We ended class by reciting different phrases on the “Know Your Rights” handout.

Let it snow!” We did a document listen and point with a printed weather forecast for the next 5 days in Portland. I made the class count how many times the word “snow” appeared on the sheet. I conducted an activity in which they voted for which weather condition they liked the most and we did a round robin activity about the most popular weather condition.
