This was a group of 9 who are getting comfortable with each other, and developing a good group dynamic. They helped each other without direction and were engaged in every activity! Ashlyn had great props for this lesson – live potted trees! The tree hugger word cloud activity got them familiar with the tree names before the round-robin, when the potted trees got passed around. She also brought in tree-planting gear (rain boots, rain pants, tree guidebook, and a shovel.) It was an especially great lesson to introduce the Saturday (2/25) tree planting opportunity with Ashlyn and Marc and Friends of Trees!
Also today, Julia presented her phone English opportunity to the group and took the names and phone numbers of those interested – all 9 learners replied yes!February 27, 2017 at 10:28 pm #8499Estefania ZavalaSpectatorLesson Title: Freedom of Press

We started with alphabet sheets and then yell and spell names. Then we worked on the title of today’s lesson as a question and answer with another short dialogue after that. We then worked on a document search, and did, “This is a” with a magazine, online article, and a magazine. We then did some dictation and another short dialogue exercise.February 28, 2017 at 9:13 pm #8507Ashley LopezSpectatorCopy the text below and paste into a comment, then fill it out! What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This was Megan’s first of two silent classes. She used ASL for the Alphabet point which was met with enthusiasm and instant understanding by the learners, even when Meg started moving quicker and quicker with her signing. Learners ALL challenged themselves to sign their names, even very low-level learners. During sentence dictation, M wrote the sentences on the dry-erase board so that she could initiate Whole-part-whole choral response by underlining. Students immediately caught on to what Meg’s hand gestures indicated as she used them consistently throughout. Judy and I modeled the bus driver/passenger dialogue to be replicated by the learners. The class ended bu Meg dividing the learners into two teams of three to find words and place names on a Tri-met map. This class was extremely collaborative, fun and filled with energy; it felt as if the line between teachers and students completely evaporated!!! :) GREAT class!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): There was good preparation with many different projects used. It kept the learners engaged and focused. We learned to place Julia between higher learners, where she would be more help. The bird curriculum offers fun activities.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
Estefania was stuck at the transit center because the MAX stopped running. I taught the first portion of her lesson plan. We started with alphabet, listen & point. We did names yell & spell. We dictated the title of the lesson and went around in a circle asking one another what the title was. We dictated 6 words and phrases related to the first amendment. We did a round robin dialogue about the womens march. We did word search listen and point with a first amendment fact sheet. We dictated a video and then watched it.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This was Megan’s second silent class. She had a great lesson plan with varied activities, which all tied in with the bus riding vocabulary. The first two activities were a little bit bumpy, but then everyone got more comfortable with the experience of Megan not talking and Colleen filling in verbally. There were several newcomers today. As the class went on, students began to support each other without prompting. Megan showed a short video about the Trimet fastpass and on the second viewing, students read the headings for the choral response without much direction. The listen and do was a fun energetic activity to end on!

There was a good balance of advanced and beginning learners. There were no new students. These students were comfortable, depending on each other for clarifications. The Owl topic interested everyone, even a tiny child, who wanted to take part, instead of playing separately. Ashlyn started the “This is a…” with the child, who did it to the mother and when to me, I would repeat it loudly and clearly, again, for the rest of the learners. It was a very successful way to include the child, and everything went efficiently. There was a good balance of speaking and writing, with a more complex sentence using the word “because”. It was good practice for the learners to have different reasons for liking their owl pick. Watching a video showing the scientific proof of the silence of owl flight, compared to other birds, was a fun last few minutes of the lesson. The learners were riveted and wanted to listen to the English words and understand them.March 14, 2017 at 8:52 pm #8543Colleen RichardsonSpectatorLesson Title: You Can Always Go Downtown

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
Today Patrik joined the class for Megan’s “gentle intervention.” Megan did a great job of responding to his suggestions. There wasn’t time for everything in the lesson plan because of extra time spent trying out some of Patrik’s suggestions. Megan’s lesson had some good dictations focused on Trimet vocabulary, as well as a lively song, “Downtown” (original version from 1965) which made up the theme about getting downtown on MAX. Patrik modeled moving students around before a dictation to get low-level learners sitting next to more advanced. The students worked well together and the higher level learners got good practice and guidance for helping others.March 14, 2017 at 9:55 pm #8544Mike WatsonSpectatorLesson Title: N/A

We started with ABC’s and names, and did the title of today’s lesson. We then wrote down and practiced a few dialogues, and did a round robin activity with several pictures. We then worked with a crossword that dealt with the first amendment. None of them had ever done a crossword before and enjoyed the activity. We then did a word search with a flyer for the, “Welcome Back Vulture Day” event coming up. Then they read the flyer sentence by sentence out loud. We ended with a a couple of other dictation sentences.March 16, 2017 at 9:23 pm #8552Patricia FrakerSpectatorLesson Title: Welcome Back Turkey Vultures

We should print more loyalty cards on card stock and trim the edges, ahead of time. (leaving the card whole with the ten card forms, though) It is difficult to cut them down to a size that will fit into the little box, without that trimming, first. A lot of time is taken up finding out that one needs to trim more and more.Self Evaluation

We had two new learners, and they sat at different ends of the table setup. With the extra help from Monica, both got needed attention. One began life as a deaf mute with other languages later. I could see sometimes she made the letter sign with her hand, first, before picking the letter on the alphabet sheet. It looked like that helped her know which letter to pick, since the hand signals and letters are both on the sheet. Because she did that, she could not keep up when the listen and point picked up speed, sometimes. She got help from other learners. Pointing to their work saying She’s He’s got it, helped her to go to them for catchup. She saw they were struggling, also, and she was not an outsider.
Ashlyn had a very entertaining bird lesson with subsequent video watching to demonstrate the Turkey Vulture’s nature. This led into Monica’s Nadaka Nature Park in Gresham which is having a festival with a real Turkey Vulture. Everyone was invited, and flyers were passed around. Julia was able to connect with the new learner she sat across from, setting up phone English practice. She decided to wait to ask the other new learner until he came again, not wanting him to feel overwhelmed.

We dictated trimmed announcement. We did round robin with “Did you ride the MAX today?” We did listen and point using the trip-met map and had learners choose something for everyone else to find. We did round robin again with question about the MAX. We did listen & do with transit. We ended the class with open forum for anybody who had questions about how to spell certain words or say certain words.
