What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
We began the class by doing the alphabet listen & point for 15 minutes. We did yell & spell. We dictated the title of the lesson and went in a circle asking one another what the title of the lesson for today was. We dictated 6 “Know Your Rights” phrases: The right to remain silent, Am I free to go, Document everything, Speak to a lawyer, Answer your question, & Give you permission. Did a Listen & point activity with a “Know your rights” handout and looked up 9 different words. We dictated 3 different dialogues and all took turns asking one another questions. We ended class by reciting different phrases on the “Know Your Rights” handout.

We modeled a role playing round robin where students asked each other to search their homes and if they were “Free to go?” which the students seemed to understand and took seriously–a few were looking up what we said on their phones to make sure they had the proper information. We watched videos that showed a couple about to get pulled over in their car for no reason. How the actress and actor responded showed a real scenario with modeled responses.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This was a small group, but things went well. Ashley started out with the Alphabet drill. Then we did Yell and Spell with all our names. We did a variation where the person started by spelling out their whole name quickly and everyone wrote it down. It worked well. We then did dictation progression with several sentences about immigration rights. For the round robin where we practiced saying the phone number for reporting immigration raids. We did a document search Listen and Point drill on a “You have rights” sheet. Ashley then got up for a Listen & Do exercise, where we practiced saying things like “Don’t sign” and “Remain Silent.” WE then finished up with a dictation progression about immigrant rights.

Started the class with alphabet, listen and point for the first 15 minutes of class. We went around the room and introduced ourselves with a yell and spell name game. We dictated the title of the lesson “Today’s lesson is called We All Need Help Sometimes.” We did dictation progress with 3 different sentences: 1) Immigration law is very complicated 2) Don’t be afraid to ask for help 3) Organizations exist to help non-citizens. We did listen and point using a “If You Are Arrested” worksheet. We did a dialogue dictation progression: A- Sign here please. B- I’m sorry, I need to speak to a lawyer first. 3) It will be easier if you sign now. 4) I won’t sign without talking to a lawyer. We did a stand up & point drill and pointed to various cities, states, countries, and rivers/oceans. We did a listen and point using immigration legal services worksheet. We ended class with 3 more dictation progressions.February 9, 2017 at 2:52 pm #8433Megan CorningSpectatorLesson Title: Know Your Rights

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): After Alphabet Listen & Point and Yell & Spell, Maureen dictated several sentences relating to knowing your rights (e.g., If you are approached by a police officer or ICE, remain silent.) After several sentences and choral response after each dictation, Maureen passed out Know Your Rights cards. We had a round robin role play that involved one person asking the next “Where do you live?,” with the response being silence while holding up a know your rights card. This was a little confusing initially, but became less so as it went around the table. We had another dictation about the website iAmerica.org, followed by a document search on a Know Your Rights sheet. We finished with a competitive challenge that involved two teams trying to be faster at forming words we’d used earlier in class from Scrabble tiles. This challenge was novel and learners seemed particularly engaged during it, but we discussed during reflection that it would be helpful to move learners around to have more balanced levels between teams. During reflection, we noted that our newest learner, who has a more personal connection with Maureen, was more connected with her than the other learners during class. This lessened a bit as class went on, but we may try having him sit between learners next time rather than at the end of the table, closest to Maureen. We had a good reflection, but I lowered the score because I didn’t get this submitted on time. :-/

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
We had two new learners, and another fairly new learner with two children in tow too, but everything went super well and smooth. Started with Alphabet, Yell & Spell, and then some dictation before passing around various parts of a tree. Also did a word search, and a document search on information on Douglas Firs. Kellie also brought apple slices to share! Lots of laughter, and learners helped each other a lot.February 14, 2017 at 10:47 am #8446Ashley LopezSpectatorLesson Title: Be My Valentine

We did a document search on this topic. Ashley then had some photos that we identified, followed by a round robin. We played a game of bingo with know your rights terms. Ashley then had us stand up and we did some Listen & Do, identifying items around the room. We finish up with a little dictation progression and a round robin with a Valentine’s Day theme. What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Patricia taught the class as her Dress Rehearsal. She photocopied several Valentine’s Day greetings including some funny ones such as “I love you even more than my iphone,” that learners got a kick out of. There was a wide range of skill levels in the room, so some learners looked up the sayings on their translation apps and some of the learners had no idea what Valentine’s Day was. During the Round Robin, learners said whether or not they liked Valentine’s Day candy and if they said yes, Megan threw candy at them, received with a lot of laughter. reflection was constructive and informative for Patricia, who was energetic and upbeat during her dress rehearsal.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This was a large class with a significant range in learner level. While there were some challenges managing this with just assistant, we used several techniques to help keep the whole class moving at the same pace (writing down the dictation for one learner to then re-write; giving a lot of 1:1 attention to another learner who was struggling; moving people around to partner low and high levels). It was a little dictation heavy, but the class was really connected and the energy was high. Learners of different languages were coaching each other and taking ownership over the class (calling ready at appropriate times to help get the group’s attention, sharing notepads with each other without us asking). It was awesome.
