What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Learners showed up mostly on time and seemed comfortable with the location of the class. One learner commented that 10:00 am is a much more convenient time (compared to 9). All the learners were Vietnamese speakers, so there was a lot of discussion during the class and clarification about definitions and grammar, but it all seemed very productive and learners were extremely engaged (in the English and in the content of the lesson). We talked about World Environment Day, and not pouring fats, oil, and grease down the drain. Zoe brought in a fat, oil, and grease to pass around in a round robin, and we did a document search with a BES fact sheet. Zoe also found a very informative video that learners seemed interested in. We got a lot of positive feedback from learners and everyone seemed very interested and excited to be there!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This was an exciting class, because we had a bunch of shadowers from the University of Western States. We spent a while getting the class going with the alphabet sheet and names (there were a lot of people in the room!). Everyone was very engaged and lively the whole time, and there was lots of good conversation happening. We did some dictation about who our guests were, and looked at a map of NE Portland to identify some features. We ended the class with some stretches led by the shadowers, which was a lot of fun.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We started with the alphabet sheet, using triplets and quads, which worked really well with the small group. Instead of Yell and Spell for the names, we spelled our names quickly and learners wrote them down, then repeated (all together and individually). This also let us do last names, which was new and exciting! We then used the Great outdoors word cloud and learners were able to engage with words and really practice pronounciation. We ended with a little bit of dictation and a map of regional parks. Overall, a fun and engaging lesson, which really took advantage of the small group to create individualized learning.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We used a printout of the invasive plants poster to do a document search, and Ian had learners repeat key phrases. Also did some dictation, learners worked well together and were especially able to support each other with parts of the sentences that were repetitive, which was great to see. We ended the class by going outside to look for and identify some plants! We discussed that having a more solid route and more time for the outdoor portion may have helped, but otherwise a very fun and engaging lesson!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We met learners (sixadults, and nine kids!) at Kelly and at the Learning Garden Lab for their Earth Day event. Once we got everyone signed in and collected, we split into small groups, each with an English speaker to lead, and did a tour of the garden and of some nearby green streets. We pointed out different parts of the garden and the green streets and had learners repeat sentences. Then we had some time to explore the event! Everyone seemed to really enjoy the space, the weather was great, and the kids had a great time too. Overall, a very successful and fun day!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We had 11 learners this morning, which is more than we’ve had in a long time! Exciting to see some folks who haven’t been around for a while, along with a new learner. We used the native plants poster with some of the material prepped last week to talk about different plants and used dictation sentences to lead up to interpreting a chart on the poster. Dictation took a little longer because of the larger group and varying abilities, so we barely got to the chart, but are hoping to reinforce these concepts and use it again next week.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Smaller class today because of no head start. We did a listen and point with a sheet of beneficial bugs and pests, then some dictation, and then MC used that dictation to ask learners “Is this a good bug?” We weren’t sure how well that would go, but most of the learners really seemed to get it! Having a small class allowed us to engage each person with direct questions. We had pretty extreme difference in ability levels but everyone worked together well and seemed engaged. We then looked at the other side of the page which had different foods pollinated by bees, with another listen and point.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Spencer from the Lent’s tool library came as a guest speaker for this class, which worked out great! He brought tools with him, and we did some dictation about the Lent’s tool library and the tools. We all got up to stand in a circle for passing around the different tools with “this is a shovel. a what. a shovel” activity, which was a fun break from the norm. Some of the higher skilled learners definitely connected with the material and understood the possiblity of getting tools from the library, which was exciting!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This was a smaller class than normal because there was no Head Start this morning, which also meant we had an extra kid hanging out with us, who participated in some of the activities. The smaller group actually worked out really well with this lesson, especially for the additional dictation which we had. After alphabet sheet and names, we did a document search using the green street fact sheet, passed around the photos of the green infrastructure, and listened to/ wrote down some of the lyrics of “Somewhere over the rainbow.” Repeating the green infrastructure cards was helpful for learners to feel more comfortable with the activity and those words, and the song was a fun addition. Learners were able to follow along with their written lyrics which was really cool to see! Some learners are still really invested in writing everything down and having every word explained. Overall it was a fun class!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Started with ready and alphabet listen and point, and learners repeated some challenging letter combos. There was a great combination of dictation, document search, fill in the blank, and round robin which kept everyone engaged. Izzy made sure to challenge learners with the material and read the class well to know when to switch activities or add a movement activity. Learners were engaged and seemed excited to practice pronunciation of difficult words! A new person expressed interest in the program at the beginning of the class and stayed to shadow the class. One of the newer learners still needs a learner ID (I did not know the language so didn’t assign them one, the card had already been made).

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Learners were asked to answer survey questions, which were explained using a mix of dictation, pictures, and gestures. Two child learners who already knew the questions helped show pictures, translate, and spell questions. Some of the questions were confusing, but learners were engaged, asking questions, and worked together to figure out the more confusing questions. It was a lot of content to get through in the class time.
