We went out to the garden and learners wrote down as many vegetables as they could find. Back in the classroom, we talked about what our favorite vegetable was.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We started class late but jumped right in and did a document search about free movies/music in the park this summer. We did dictation about parks and then actually went to Khunamokwst Park. There we did some more dictation and then two activities; we did an observtational exercise where learners wrote down what they saw around the park (specific, detailed things). Learners also closed their eyes and listened for a minute and then discussed what they heard.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Gastón led the learners through learning about native plants in the Pacific Northwest. After looking at diagrams of native plants, the learners chose their favorite plant and sketched it. Without the name of the plant with the drawings, they would introduce their plants to other learners. We also looked at pictures of native plants and talked about their medicinal properties.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We talked about different native plants that can be used for medicinal purposes. Learners did a document search and found words like “ailment” and “apothecaries”. We also looked at pictures of native plants and did dictation off of that. Learners learned about a couple plants and what their medicinal properties are.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Marc had learners do dictation about Friends of Trees and had Max say sentences about her job. Learners passed tools around during a Round Robin. They also did Round Robin to ask if they’ve ever planted a tree or volunteered before. Also to ask if they would attend the planting on Saturday. Some learners showed interest in the planting. They did a document search with the planting flyer and Google map with driving directions.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Started with 2 students (one was new) and 3 more students came in about 20 minutes late. We looked at graphs and data about rainfall. Learners got into pairs and worked together to fill out a table of average rainfall per month. Gaston brought in a ruler so that learners could visualize how much rain we get in Oregon. There were a lot of different languages spoken between learners – English, Spanish, French, and Swahili.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Learners showed up at various times within the first 30 or so minutes. We did a Document Search with the flyer about the Latino Network Open House and the Clothing Swap. We also did Dictation about events that learners could attend. We learned the lyrics to Frosty the Snowman. Patrik played it on a speaker and everyone sang along. There were many kids today – child care was provided but some kids were in and out of the classroom to say hi to relatives or get more food.
