What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Class began five minutes late due to bad weather. We focused on GJY and BPV during Alpha Listen and Point. BPV is most challenging for these learners. After writing the title of today’s lesson, we used colored pencils and paper to illustrate the lesson title, “Count Your Blessings”. Each learner then described his or her drawing. Then, we divided into pairs to interview each other, asking questions like, “What is your favorite family holiday?” and “How do you celebrate?”. One learner brought a lovely homemade cake to share. I enjoy teaching this class and am sorry next week is the last class.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Tonight was are largest class yet, with two new learners. We practiced writing down various dollar amounts. Then, working in pairs, we wrote and acted out short shopping skits. In teams, the learners used a Target holiday gift catalogue to make a shopping list. Each team did great – selecting several items and staying within the budget. We ended class by listening, dictating, and singing “Money”, from Cabaret. As this is an advanced group, asked them what they would like to work on during our last two classes. One learner requested dialoguing around asking for help when experiencing car trouble or needing to go to a mechanic. Another wanted to talk about cooking. I think we’ll be able incorporate both in the next two weeks.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This is a fun group that works well together. I dictated a story to them about the last trip I took. Then two learners describe recent trips while the others wrote. We used a large US map to locate various cities and bodies of water. We ended by asking each other if we had been to certain places and whether or not we would like to go.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We did a short alphabet practice because these learners are all advanced. Using a Target ad, we compared prices on items by saying, “this costs less than this”. We played a game of “Price is Right” using pictures cut from the Target ad. We then used a burger restaurant menu to compare prices in the US and in the learners’ home countries. We ended by practicing a Beatles song. We had one new learner tonight. Because these learners are generally pretty advanced, I need to come up with new and creative ways to challenge and engage them.

We used Fred Meyer ads for Listen and Point, then we each described an item on the ad while the others tried to guess the item. We created ads for the businesses we created last week and asked each other questions like, “Is that on sale?”. We finished with the song, “Can’t Buy Me Love”.

We used a Fred Meyer ad for Listen and Point, then played “Start your own business”. Each learner decided on a type of store to own and the other learners asked questions like, “What do you sell?” and “How much does it cost?”. We ended class with the song, “Can’t Buy Me Love”.

We used Rite Aid ads for Listen & Point and Listen & Identify. We asked each other how much certain items cost, and then we all made shopping lists. We ended by dictating and singing some jingles. I think we can build a good group in this new site.

We learned new shopping vocabulary, and used an Albertson’s ad for listen and point. We enjoyed making shopping lists together.

We learned vocabulary related to food safety, and used a safe food temperature handout for listen and point. We all had fun pounding our fists on the table to indicate whether or not we like a food. We ended class with a word scramble game. Fun class for all!
