What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We began by reviewing body parts (and learned some new ones) followed by a dictation of some ailments/symptoms. We then practiced talking about symptoms with some dialogue strips that I had created and used in previous classes. Great speaking practice! Since we didn’t have a ton of time left we learned some common commands one might hear at the doctor (roll up your sleeve, take a deep breath, etc). After writing them out, we practiced via TPR. Good class!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Class started with ‘title of todays lesson’ which ended up being pretty funny- thankfully the most advanced learner knew the meaning and so she helped with translation. Otherwise, my plan was to just do the title and then move on without explaining. We practiced some short dialogues which seemed to capture their interest. the first was about where they buy their groceries and the second involved complimenting each other and asking where we bought certain items. It was awesome! We also talked about the word ‘awesome’ and some of them learned right then what it meant.. and one of them kept using it the rest of the class, which was just great! We did some dollar amount dictation which proved to be pretty easy for them (and I think kind of boring)? I couldn’t really tell but I didn’t spend too much time on it. I’m just trying things out with this group still, sometimes I think they are more advanced than they are, and vice versa. We ended with looking thru a sale ad for Fred Meyer which was okay… again, just something I thought I’d try but I don’t think it was that useful.intersteing for them. However, once we started talking about organic foods, it seemed to spark things up a bit. We didn’t have a ton of time but I told one learner I would find out how to get rid of aphids organically since she is having problems with them on her organic garden. As a firm supporter of organic foods vs. non-organinc, I am excited to let her know what I find out! very nice class overall.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We began by reviewing body parts followed by a review of some ailments/symptoms that we learned last week. We practiced with a dialogue for ‘making an appointment’. I couldn’t tell if it was too easy, too long, or if they were just bored but the energy didn’t feel as high.. We then moved onto the medical checklist where I Was going to have them just practice with fake answers :Have you ever had… ” I circled some different terms on each of their papers but they were so into the meaning and also were curious how certain words sounded out so we kind of organically switched to a document search which was fine.. I think we will go back to it next week, they definitely were interested in it. Good class overall!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We began with a short dialogue that we did last week ‘what did you buy’. This time I also had them include the cost of items they bought so we palyed around with phrases like “I bought 2 pounds of chicken for $10”. Super good pronunciation practice especially with the word pound, they all have a really hard time saying this word so we focused on it a lot. We did some more practice with talking about costs- I brought it some items like coffee, a book, sunglasses and we did little dialogues while passing them around.. they loved it! We ended by writing out a longer dialogue that I wanted to practice but we only had time to write it out, not actually speak it out so we will try to go back to it next week. Unfortuanately 2 of them will be gone on vacation so it’ll be a small group.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Class was ok. Only 2 learners, I was a little frazzled/unfocused today and it showed in class. I definitely prepared but energy was low everywhere and even though there were definitely highlights in class, it just felt pretty mediocre. We did review of body parts, talking about symptoms, then a document search and short dialogue with a medical histroy checklist. I used the Deck of Professions for the first time for the last activity, and it was pretty good, but I just used a few cards, not nearly close to the full deck. I used two different characters to describe symptoms. We then did a dictation/dialogue practice with them and then ended with a curriculum vote. Next week we will start with Emergency Preparation, actually one of my favorites!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This class felt a little better than the first. Two of the usual learners were missing which made it feel a little less vibrant but still, it wasn’t bad! We began with a short dialogue that we did last week ‘what did you buy’ and ‘how much did it cost’. We realized that they all have a really hard time distinguishing between the words Spinach and Spanish so we focused on that for a few minutes.. We did some more practice with complimenting eachother/asking where did you buy it? and finding out the costs. I gave them a handout on the ‘dirty dozen and clean fifteen’ and we explored that for a bit. The last activity also involved the Deck of Professions.. I dictated short stories about some of the characters and made up stories about what they sell. We did dictation and then speaking practice and learned that they have a hard time distinguishing between ‘sale and sell’. I think next week we will work with some minimal pair words. Overall, not a bad class :)

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Class was ok. Only 1 learner came today which didn’t feel great.. she said that the others on her shift were going to have to stay 2 hours late today so they didn’t want to come an hour and a hlaf early on top of that. Understandable.. She did say that she comes to class no matter waht because wants to make sure I don’t go away, she really likes that she can come practice with me. So that made me feel good. She did come a bit late so we didn’t get to most of my plan. Today we mostly practiced with phrases related to having an emergency and then started with physical descriptions. We also realized that this specific learner needs help with minimal pair words that have R’s in them. So, breathing vs. bleeding. House vs. Horse. I will try to incorporate that next week into the lesson.. I’m hoping a couple more come next week!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This was a pretty solid class! The energy was good and everything just flowed really well. I was super in tune with them and we worked hard on pronunciation. i also really stuck with one grammar point (implicitly, of course) and I think it was just interesting grammar- and content- wise to them. We began with talking about ‘modes of transportation’ and then practiced with the past participle ‘Have you ever..? That organically became the grammar focus of the class. After talking about transportation, we played with a map of the U.S and talked about places we’ve been and pointed out where certain states/cities were. I found out a lot about them today! They are actually a fairly well traveled group.. I think we’ll have fun with this topic!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Well it was good that there were 4 learners today! There haven’t been that many in a few weeks. Still, for whatever reason, I just have a hard time getting the energy up in this group. I haven’t quite figured out what it is, the second group is just much easier to work with. Perhaps it’s just that the levels of this group are lower and I think they’re bored when really they just aren’t understanding me? Or maybe they are all just really shy and quiet? Either way we had a pretty solid class- started with a quick alphabet (they all came about 5-10 minutes late). I think doing the triplets with them is the key to keeping them challenged with this specific activity. We then did a minimal pair activity that was ok, I think I would do it differently next time, though. We practiced saying our addresses and then what clothes we’re wearing. Lastly I had them describe what the others were wearing -( she is wearing….) all good practice, it just didn’t feel very ‘fun’. Given that they leave a little early, that’s all we got to. Julie will be there subbing for me next week, curious how it goes for her!

Even though there were only 2 out of 5 (2 were on vacation and the other had to leave work early today) the energy was good and everything flowed really well again. We did some good review and worked hard on pronunciation. I tried a minimal pair activity with this group as well but it went much better because the list I had included images, not just words. And they really need the practice- they can’t hear the difference between sh/ch in many words. Again we stuck with one main grammar point, the same as last week which was perfect. We practiced with the maps again and one learner told a story about her trip to San Diego 2 weeks ago.. I’m excited for Julie to teach next week so she can ask the 2 vacationers how their trips went (via an LEA activity, if she chooses!)

There were 5 learners today! That’s the most we’ve had in this group. 3 of them were returnees, 2 were new and they were all at approx. the same level which was nice. We did some alphabet and a version of yell n spell, just didn’t have them repeating letters. I incorporated the title of todays lesson for the first time, and it went really well. I gave them a definition for ‘you are what youeat’ but not an example after realizing it was enough. And actually I think most of them understood the meaning. We moved onto practicing food vocabulary with images I brought in. I held up the image, they called out the name- or I told them if they didn’t know it- they wrote it down then we passed it around saying this is a/these are… Really great activity for this group. This class will have to end at 1:50 since they go to work at 2. I was going to just do nutrition for the next 4 weeks but I really wanted the vote to come from them so we did a curriculum vote at the end and they chose ‘at the doctor’. Julie will be there as the sub next week…

Only 3 learners in this group, all returnees. But, overall a nice class back! Energy was up there till towards the end, I did a doc search with food labels and then a q and a kind of comparing the foods. I don’t know if it was just boring to them, or confusing but it just didn’t flow. Luckily the first ¾ of the class was fun.. we also did the title of todays lesson but I included an example thinking it would help their confusion with the meaning, but it didn’t. Still, we got some good practice with the activity. Then we asked eachother what we ate for breakfast and talked about healthy vs. unhleathy. Also ended with a curriculum vote and they chose Shopping!
