What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We taught in a different room today because there was a flower-arranging class in our normal room. Class was set up in a u-shape with fewer tables, but it seemed to work out. Today’s lesson focused on the results of the election. We started with alphabet and names, and continued with dictation about the results of the election. Then we did a listen and point about the low voter turnout. Lucas finished with a video.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Today was my final exam, thus I began the class solo, doing the alphabet until Patrik arrived. We did yell and spell names, and the title of the day’s lesson, with myself providing instructions to Patrik where relevant. This lesson was about the results of the Oregon primary, so we did a round robin with pictures of some of the winners and then dictated sentences about who they are.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Today was Sara’s last day as well as a scheduled supervision. The topic was sin tax, with the lesson built around an informative video. We watched the video, dictated sentences from it, and then rewatched it. Because there were two shadowers and four learners, each learner ended up with a lot of individualized attention. Then we did a few dialogues about the sin tax and the difference in cost in Seattle vs. Portland. Sara finished the lesson by giving out snacks.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Class today was small. We started with standard procedure, on the topic of sales tax. We did a few dialogues comparing prices between Washington and Oregon, after having done a noun round robin and some dictations about what sales tax is. A lot of complications came up regarding how to write monetary amounts. Something we’ve noted for the future.

Will be figuring out the best ways to make the activities work for a larger group in the future.

We began the class with the usual activities and dictated facts about taxes, which were in a video we watched later. We did a round robin with a tax form and then did a document search with it. We finished up reading an unrelated poem, reciting it word by word, then line by line, then having listeners who volunteered read the whole thing.

We did a round robin for the Statue of Liberty, and then wrote down some facts about immigration to the United States from a video Sara had prepared. This culminated the lesson.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We started the lesson with few learners, and began with the alphabet. More learners joined as the lesson went on, with us eventually having a total attendance of 13. We did yell and spell with names, and then wrote the title of the day’s lesson, segueing into learning about rights with a simple listen and point. Sara introduced the Know Your Rights Cards, and we did dictations with phrases on the cards. Because we ended up having to do a lot of improvisation (the learners were higher-level today and we went through material quickly), the learners themselves offered a lot of extra support toward each other, such as offering corrections or pointing someone to the right phrase. We practiced asking questions with the learners responding with what they’d learned, and finished off the lesson with pointing toward directions.

Another learner joined us at this point. We did a listen and point with intersections, and then listen and do with neighborhood actions. We finished off with a few more round robins, both with nouns and a dictated conversation.

It was my model teaching class, so we started with “Ready,” then with different versions of the alphabet. We then did yell and spell, but with learners writing down the names instead of repeating each letter aloud. Then we did the title of today’s lesson, and turned it into a round robin. We followed by writing down and dictating a sentence about Peninsula park, and then dictating the names of other parks. We did another set of round robins, asking learners if they’d been to certain parks. We had a brainstorming session for which learners had two minutes to write down the parks we learned, and have the opportunity to add others they knew of. Then we did listen and do – first writing down and dictating the verbs – so I could see how it should be done. Finally, Ramin went over a few events occurring at various parks, and we wrote down the event details and the park addresses.

At this point another learner arrived and we did Listen and Point with a sheet on Mother’s Day. Ashley kept switching learners around to keep the group mixed and we searched for words such as “tradition,” “great-grandmothers,” and so on. We wrote down the question “what day does Mother’s Day land on this year?” One of our learners needed more individual attention (after we asked higher level learners to show her the spelling of the words) and this slowed the activity down a little. However, she was able to speak the words when the question was sent around the room Round Robin style. Then we did Yell and Spell with our mothers’ names, and wrote those down as well. After this, Ashley showed pictures of a newborn baby, a Mother’s Day card, a bouquet, etc., which we sent around the room as well. This was followed by writing the words down and progressive dictation. Finally, Ashley asked me how I would be celebrating Mother’s Day, to which my response was, “I don’t know yet.” We had learners write this down and perform dictation as well.

We started class a little differently because it was Ashley’s “gentle intervention” and we had only one learner. We started with the PPT people sitting with the learner. Instead of doing alphabet sheets, we gave sentences introducing our names and something we did that day. We had our learner write this down, read the sentences back to us, then come up with our own. Our learner said he wasn’t good at writing difficult words so we tried to come up with more complicated sentences about what we did that day. Words used were things like “crematorium,” “excursion,” “cultural competence,” and so on. At this point a second learner came in and we started forming sentences and sending it around the room by verbal repetition only, modelling down. At this point the third learner came in. We finished up this activity to get everyone’s names straight, and then partnered off, PPT staff to learner, to dictate our transportation journeys. After this, Ashley played a song with an address in it along with Bing Crosby. First she had learners write words they recognized, then we dictated lines of the song one at a time, playing the musical version before writing it down. We finished off by looking over a leaflet Ashlyn wrote for a park cleaning event this Saturday,
