What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We started the class with only one learner. We sat and did the alphabet sheets and, when it became clear our learner was struggling, just went over the alphabet in its entirety. We did yell and spell, and then dictated the title of today’s lesson. It was at this point three other learners came in. We finished dictating the title, then when back to the yell and spell activity. The original learner did not want to spell his name, but later in the lessons was open to trying to speak out loud. We dictated the address of the library, and sent it around the room in round robin form. We did listen and point with a map of Gresham, then divided Gresham into quadrants and found locations based on north/east/south/west. We also did this in real life, pointing northwest from Stark Street and so on. We finalized this activity by finding parks and dictating the address of Nakada Nature Park (sp?), and then directions for how to get there. This was the end of the lesson.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Class started a few minutes late with just one learner. We did the alphabet sheets for a few minutes, and then Kelly switched it around and had our one learner call out the letters. This passed fairly quickly and we used a few minutes discussing the weather before a second learner arrived. We resumed the alphabet sheets. Kelly again had Ivy call out the letters. Both Ivy and Eduardo were laughing and enacting the PPT format – “You got it!” We then performed progressive dictation with the title of the lesson. Eduardo said he liked the word “style” in the title. Following this, we did Listen and Point with Trimet’s map of Portland. We used both sides of the map, pointing out specific locations and connecting them to the MAX lines. Thus, one of us would say, for example, “Where is PSU?” And, after everyone had found it, we asked which MAX lines were nearby. At some point around here, our third and last learner came in; we returned to the “What’s My Name?” activity to get everyone reacquainted. Then we did progressive dictation with sentences about the MAX line routes. Eduardo consistently helped the other learners with their sentences, and Kelly took the opportunity to work on pronunciation with Yanet, We also demonstrated the MAX routes on the map after progressive dictation. Finally, we did progressive dictation with Kelly’s transportation experience today and opened the floor to questions. There weren’t really any, but Ivy said she liked the lesson today! And thus was today’s lesson.
