Then we did a dictation about holding onto W2s which was then turned into a dialogue. For the final activity Joseph put a bunch of change on the table and asked the learners to make different amounts of change.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): The class followed a fairly basic structure at the start, and hte dictation went very smoothly. He demonstrated dialogues only once or twice before prompting the students to do them with each other. This worked beautifully with the upper level students and poorly with some of the lower level students who couldn’t keep up with the class. The range of the class was such that if he had slowed it down for the lower level students the upper level ones would’ve likely been bored. Then he played a song which everyone enjoyed, and had the students do a word hunt using the song lyrics, which everyone was able to follow very smoothly.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We had a couple of new and newer faces in attendance, and didn’t serve them superbly. We grouped them together because they came in first with the more advanced learners coming in later, and failed to recognize the problem and move them around. This said myself and Jess were generally able to make sure they stayed caught up with the lesson, and I think they had a good experience overall.
The class was fairly straight forward; starting with the alphabet sheet, going onto two similar dictation/dialogues, and ending with a video/dictation. The alphabet sheet exercise went fairly smoothly, with the students figuring out most of them with little trouble. The dictations/dialogues went smoothly, and I kinda felt like it was a bit low level for all but the least advanced students. The movie was a speech by MLK, which may have hit a nerve with two of our students from Russia as it mentioned Russia and China as totalitarian states. The final dictation from the speech was a bit too challenging for the lower level students to understand as it was a fairly long complex sentence, and this was the point in the class where the skill level segregation become most obvious.
