What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): For this class we went to a local church and did an intercambio class. A bunch of English speakers sat on one side of a table, and a bunch of spanish speakers on another. After introductions were made and food was eaten, we took turns speaking to each other, explaining to the person across from us who spoke the other language what we had had to eat that day. Then the other person would recite as best they could back to us what we had said. We did a few rounds of this, each time with a different twist. After that was over, we broke off into groups of only the Spanish speakers and only the English speakers and agreed on the words to common songs (You are my Sunshine for the English speakers, and I did not properly catch the one for the Spanish speakers). Then we found a speaker of the other language and tried to teach the song to them. It ended with us all singing both songs.

We walked around the park outside of Midland Library with Marc pointing out trees, naming them, and saying a short sentence about them. We then had our groups practice that sentence until Marc moved onto the next tree.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Marc started with the alphabet yell and point. He then had the students introduce themselves. He then went straight into teaching them the song Joe Hill. He first played it, then tried to get them to repeat verses back to him verse by verse without them writing it down. He then introduced the title of today’s lesson, following it up with a choral response. Going back to the song he had them write down a couple of verses by reading them off a transcription of the song, and having them do a choral response for each verse. He then did the “this is a blank” “a what?” “a blank” exercise, using people from the song and other people related to the labor movement.
