What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Dictated sentences about social media and asked each other questions such as “How many Facebook friends do you have?” during Round Robin to much laughter as we one-upped each other with our responses. Somehow, I ended up with 700,000 Facebook friends! We played a raucous game of Scrabble Scramble–MEXICO V. RUSSIA edition. (Mexico prevailed) :) Fun lively class!! Two new learners!!! :)

This class was not my best, fo sho! I think the learners had fun asking each other what social media they used and showing me apps on their phones, but I had to sit down halfway through the class because I felt really dizzy. I know this is not my fault, but there were two new learners who may have thought I was lazy or they may have been bored. We are our own worst critics! I DID give them all chocolate, so maybe they’ll be back! Who knows!?

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): I had learners write several lyrics to the Sister Sledge song “We are Family.” One learner recognized that it could be a song. He asked if i knew the Beatles. We listened to the song on my phone and they followed along on their photocopied lyric sheet I handed out. We filled in a simple family tree and discovered several like names ie. my great gransmother’s name is Lena. We memorized how many brothers and sisters we all had and I did a rapid-fire point-and-question around the table. We ended the class with a ladies vs. gentlemen game of Scrabble Spell. Great, lively, funny class!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This was a fantastic class and I had fun from start to finish. I wasn’t familiar with anyone in the class, except Mr. A, and most of them came to class super early. I got to meet the learners while I was setting up. They were so nice and eager to help me move tables, etc. I modified my sentences as I noticed low-proficiency during LISTEN & POINT. Learners helped each other, used technology and asked questions–the learning eagerness was palpable. We had a silly, funny and engaging time passing around Hershey’s kisses with Valentine messages on the bottom and one learner even wrote her neighbor an accompanying Valentine message to pass during that ROUND ROBIN that was such a simple symbol for why we do this work.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This was a whole new experience for me in this new space! Other than having no bathroom, no heat, parking way far away and no room to move, the class was absolutely fantastic! I had two great helpers–Jayson, who wants to be a part of PPT and Richard, a retiree who wants to find a great volunteer position (probably through Multnomah County Library system). We dictated short sentences such as “It’s your turn!” and “What was my score?” then played a series of fun and funny Minute to Win It games that involved rolling die, stacking tiny blocks and bouncing ping pong balls. We used our sentences repeatedly and cheered each other on to much hysterical laughter. Time FLEW by and we had no idea that class had been over for five minutes while we were at the tail end of our fifth (out of seven games). A learner became visibly flustered when there were police outside. It was lovely to hear another learner explain that there were police in this location a lot because of the small homeless camp right across the street and that PPT is a safe space. It felt fantastic to facilitate class where: a woman came for the first time, two shadowers were finding their place in this company and I got my first taste of the new space. :)

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We had TWO brand new learners who were shy but excited to be involved in the class. They caught on VERY quickly even though they were both quite low level. I dictated a somewhat funny list of tips about shopping and we had a good laugh over “Eat a hearty breakfast” since it can be taken VERY literally. People had some pretty strong opinions about black Friday and cyber Monday and some wondered why ‘cyber’ and ‘black’ were not capitalized. “Aren’t they included in the name of a holiday???” lol We passed around wrapping paper and gift bags during a Round Robin and played a game. Tarawyn enjoyed the class and liked that it followed a similar template to Zadok’s lesson she shadowed previously. great after-class chat getting to know where she is on her ESL journey.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): It was a great class–very lively! I dictated several sentences about the absurd amount of money we Americans spend during the holidays, then facilitated a Round Robin where we asked each other if we celebrate Christmas at home. I was surprised at the high number of folks who celebrate Christmas. As this class is quite high level, I dictated short sentences that highlighted the difference between commonly confused words–this v. these. We played a game and ate cookies! After-class chat was productive; we discussed how to support an extremely low=level learner when the rest of the class is quite high. Dick is trying to figure out what his next step is with PPT–I think he’s leaning toward being a volunteer with the library. I hope he sticks around–the learners like him a lot!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Francine dictated sentences which she edited on the fly to accommodate several low-level learners. She shared both the recipe and the pumpkin cake she made which was delicious. There was an older Russian gentleman who needed a LOT of support–not sure if he is completely literate in his native language. He struggled a lot with listen and point and was completely lost during sentence dictation. I wrote down the sentences for him to copy and showed him photos on my phone of the nouns we used such as jack-o-lanterns and ghosts. We discovered during Round Robin that there was very little interest in going trick-or-treating or with wearing a costume for Halloween.

I was glad they were there, but I didn’t feel good about not being able to connect with each person. We had fun and I liked that when I had them write sentences pertaining to break-in prevention, they kept asking what a wooden dowel was. I had one I brought from home behind my back and whipped it out to much laughter. We passed it around and when I demonstrated how to wedge it in a window to prevent someone being able to slide the window, they loved it! I passed out magnetic cards and markers and had them write down important emergency numbers so they could stick it on their fridges. They seemed to enjoy that and understood where they would stick them when they got home. It was a lively and fun class. Next time you see me, you won’t recognize me—I think I sweat off at least 20 pounds!!!! ;)

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This was Sam’s dress rehearsal. he said beforehand that he was nervous, but it didn’t show and he did a fantastic job! A few learners trickled in after class started and I wondered whether to alert Sam to welcome them by having them spell their names and risk losing the flow of the class. With four teachers in the class, we were able to do a lot of one-on-one. The learners were all helping each other and a very intimate seating arrangement lent itself to cooperation. There was a heavy Russian presence in the class which was terrific to see. After class chat was constructive and illuminating–we chatted about the program and what we thought of the class today. Other than a few minor bumps and practice needed, specifically with whole-part-whole, Sam is on his way to being a pro-status facilitator whose attentive care for our wonderful learners is evident!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be thorough) This was the first time I have taught at Midland in a long long time, so I didn’t know how many learners would show up, but when I was at the library earlier printing out documents, a staff member told me the classes were quite popular. 10 learners showed up. Three of them were there for the first time. I couldn’t find an updated schedule of classes at the library to hand out to learners who wanted it. The class was fun and dynamic with learners seemingly enjoying passing around items to fill a backpack for back to school after writing a handful of sentences about PPS and American schools in general. Elizabeth was very helpful and wove into the procedure of the class seamlessly. She thought the class was only an hour long and had to leave right away for an appointment, so we did not have an after-class chat. I hope those learners who wanted schedules of the classes come back. They seemed to enjoy the class very much and were quick to thank us for teaching immediately after. The PPT box is SO heavy and bursting with papers!!! I weeded out old loyalty cards and hope to clean out the box very soon before someone breaks their back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :(

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): The logistics of the class were a little wonky as Erika met with each learner one-by-one in the other part of the room separated by a partition. It is the end of the Center’s fiscal year or something. It was cramped and difficult to walk around the tables. However, the class was VERY into the seek and find I made using graphics of a lot of the clothing articles we’ve been learning and had heated debates over the picture of swim trunks versus shortie pajama bottoms!! It almost came to blows and I prepared myself to bob and weave like a boxer evading a punch. The learners enjoyed writing the names of the articles under the picture and made notes to help themselves with pronunciation. I told several of the repeat learners that I was going on vacation and that a different person was to take over the class. They were sad I was leaving and this, of course, gave me the feels. I will try and come to the class on July 16 to help my successor with the class! It is SO loud but mostly fun.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Class was really fun! I planned a full, elaborate-ish lesson by filling 2 bags of clothes and thinking we could pass items around in a Round Robin with a simple “This is a ______” while circulating the articles. This actually went even better than expected, with learners able to mimic my words with support from the three of us. We clapped and used a lot of accolades to build confidence. Though we only got through one item and Erika mentioned the learners might be confused because it sounds like I’m saying “HOT” when it was a hat, the learners seemed to enjoy the challenge and were laughing with their peers. We also played one game of BINGO with words that were practiced in the previous lesson. They wanted to play another game, but we only had time for one. :)
