What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
Conducted alphabet listen and point, name yell and spell, and sentence dictation about today’s lesson. Students wrote directions for making a smoothie as Liz dictated. Students were then directed to give me (Maureen) commands to make the smoothie such as: “Add soymilk, put in fruit,” etc. Liz and I passed around the finished smoothies–everyone partook except Abeda. Students participated in a Round Robin about their berry eating tendencies. Class finished with a seek and find followed by a round robin pertaining to the parts of a berry. We learned that the Spanish word for bone and pit are the same. Makes sense!!!Maureen RiggsSpectatorLesson Title: “Do You Have a Minute?”

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
Luke had students do alphabet listen and point, introduction yell and spell, then find phone terms such as: “replay messages,” and message forwarding” from a photocopied sheet. We role-played a back and forth dialogue about calling someone and giving them instructions. Students copied dictated sentences from the dialogue. Luke split the class in half and had one half be person A from the dialogue and the other side be person B from the dialogue. We then started a round robin where the students practiced the bit in pairs. Class ended just all learners had the opportunity to practice speaking.Maureen RiggsSpectatorLesson Title: Freedom Isn’t Free

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Mark did alphabet point, introductions Round Robin and had the students listen to a song he cued up on the computer about Joe Hill–a civil liberties advocate. He passed around photocopies of some of the people who were mentioned in the song and a few others. Students were confused about the pictures and what they had to do with the lesson. Many photocopies were being circulated simultaneously.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
The class was Liz’s dress rehearsal. Many learners trickled in after class started, so Liz had everyone spell their names again for the latecomers. Liz passed out photocopies of employees doing the wrong thing at work such as not wearing a hard hat or standing in a grease-laden kitchen. Learners circulated the copies round-robin style. Many of the students laughed since the photocopies showed a man wearing a plastic bag on his head instead of a hard hat, etc. The class was rather small, so the entire lesson was over before the class time was up. Liz quickly came up with another activity having students mime putting on a hard hat and tying their shoes, etc. It was a small enough class so that we teachers could spend individualized time with students who either needed extra help or wanted to hone their pronunciation skills/spelling.Maureen RiggsSpectatorLesson Title: I need a doctor! What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
Alphabet listen and point was slowed down for very low-level English student(s).
Modeled dialogue of making an appointment to see a doctor. Students were engaged and on task, though there was a general lack of energy. Learners helped each other only when prompted. Students enjoyed hunting for words during the end of class “Seek and Find.”Maureen RiggsSpectatorLesson Title: Freedom & Civil Liberties

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This lesson was Mark G’s final practicum. Alphabet say and point went well; students were challenged yet comforted by the repetition. Learners trickled in incrementally which forced Mark to revisit the introductions and name spelling as prompted by Patrik. There were two brand-new students; one was accompanied by an aid and left early, the other used a cell phone to decipher and translate the sentences Mark wanted the students to write. Mark played a song on the computer which the learners seemed to enjoy. After the song was over, students were prompted to write the lyrics to the song. There was a huge discrepancy in the competency of the students; some flew through the writing while a handful still struggled to finish. MC handed out copies of photos of the people mentioned in the song and other civil rights activists. Students were instructed to introduce the people on the copies to the learner to their left and so on, round robin style. Learners laughed and seemed to enjoy helping each other and making mistakes. They were helped along by the assistants. The class was a challenge for everyone, both logistically with late-comers, as well as technical difficulties with equipment, however, people were engaged and smiling.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): started 5 minutes late. Omitted alphabet listen and point. Lesson was called: “Can you hear me now?” Many students were confused and/or did not understand their cell phone carriers so it was useful to practice. A lot of collaboration. Maureen was not in the attendance database. She was DJ. I said “NOT LISTED.” Collection and writing of loyalty cards was a work in progress as Maureen is learning the system.
