Alphabet listen and point was slowed down for very low-level English student(s).
Modeled dialogue of making an appointment to see a doctor. Students were engaged and on task, though there was a general lack of energy. Learners helped each other only when prompted. Students enjoyed hunting for words during the end of class “Seek and Find.”May 18, 2016 at 3:48 pm #7529Ivy WatsonSpectatorCopy the text below and paste into a comment, then fill it out! What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
The class was Liz’s dress rehearsal. Many learners trickled in after class started, so Liz had everyone spell their names again for the latecomers. Liz passed out photocopies of employees doing the wrong thing at work such as not wearing a hard hat or standing in a grease-laden kitchen. Learners circulated the copies round-robin style. Many of the students laughed since the photocopies showed a man wearing a plastic bag on his head instead of a hard hat, etc. The class was rather small, so the entire lesson was over before the class time was up. Liz quickly came up with another activity having students mime putting on a hard hat and tying their shoes, etc. It was a small enough class so that we teachers could spend individualized time with students who either needed extra help or wanted to hone their pronunciation skills/spelling.May 23, 2016 at 10:22 pm #7539Estefania ZavalaSpectatorLesson Title: Hold the Phone

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We started with ABC sheets, names, and the title of the lesson, followed by dictation. We then did some listen and do and different dialogue scripts with different phone scenarios. We also filled out some similar scripts and filled out a sheet after listening to a voicemail. We ended by reading a phone dialogue.

He passed around photocopies of some of the people who were mentioned in the song and a few others. Students were confused about the pictures and what they had to do with the lesson. Many photocopies were being circulated simultaneously.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
Luke had students do alphabet listen and point, introduction yell and spell, then find phone terms such as: “replay messages,” and message forwarding” from a photocopied sheet. We role-played a back and forth dialogue about calling someone and giving them instructions. Students copied dictated sentences from the dialogue. Luke split the class in half and had one half be person A from the dialogue and the other side be person B from the dialogue. We then started a round robin where the students practiced the bit in pairs. Class ended just all learners had the opportunity to practice speaking.May 25, 2016 at 11:37 pm #7548Megan CorningSpectatorLesson Title: Vance Park walking tour

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This class was a collaboration between PPT, Green Lents and Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon. We began class with the alphabet sheet warm up and spelling our names, and then we paired up learners with teachers/assistants (2:1) and moved the class outside. We walked to Vance Park, with teachers practicing language with learners along the way. We stayed in our smaller groups once there and walked around the garden, identifying various plants, trees, and insects and eating strawberries and raspberries from the bushes. The novelty of the class format seemed to be appreciated by the learners. We got back to the library a bit late, and pacing and speaking and being heard while walking along a busy road were challenging at times. But there was a high level of connection and engagement, plus we learned during reflection that one of the learners was able to identify parts of flowers by the names learned in previous classes in this module.
