What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Grace brought doughnuts and coffee and since (as anticipated) it was a fairly small class with people trickling in because of weather concerns as well as being the end of the coming holidays, we started fairly casually by sharing food and talking about our plans for winter break. When the group got a little bigger we moved onto a formal lesson. Grace started with alphabet practice, then used the coffee cups, creamer, and sugar she had brought to dictate questions and do a round robin activity where students practiced asking each other if they would like coffee and how they took it. We had a new student in the class from Belarus, which changed the dynamic of the class a bit, because he was the only non Spanish speaker, and also at a higher level than many of the other students, which I think we all felt could have easily made him feel disconnected from the group, but I think he actually ended up being very engaged in the class and connected well with the other students, so that was a high note. We also did a round robin activity talking about where we’re from and one food we traditionally eat on Christmas. Having the new student added another dimension to this activity, since we had to describe the foods instead of just naming them since they weren’t familiar to everyone in the class, which was very fun / mouthwatering!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): I started with alphabet practice, but since they were keeping up well and moving through it quickly, I didn’t do as much as usual so I could spend a little more time on the song. After that I dictated the name of the lesson, and then did a modified LEA like Patrik had done the week before where I dictated some questions, and then asked we went around answering the questions and writing out all the responses (with mild adjustments as needed to any phrasing / vocab choice issues). Questions were on the theme of gift giving – what do you want for Christmas, what are you giving your family, is your shopping finished, etc. After that we listened to the song The 12 Days of Christmas and wrote down some of the lyrics. I noticed that it was feeling like a lot of work to the students, who were both a bit tired and hoping for an easy/fun class for the last class of the year, so I modified the plan and after establishing the pattern of the song, we just wrote out the “day” and the “gift” (i.e. “second” or “third” and “two turtle doves” or “three french hens”). Since a lot of these are unusual vocab words, and I had my computer, we google image searched them. At the end we attempted to sing the song together (and were actually quite successful by the last verse!)

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We spent the first hour or so of the class with a discussion in English and Spanish about the Trump being elected and what that means for our students, our classes, humanity, etc. Patrik made sure that the students were able to voice all their concerns and ask any questions they had about the ramifications of a Trump presidency. Afterwards we moved into a modified LEA discussing our Christmas plans, and finished by talking about our favorite Christmas songs, so ended on a happy note.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): After alphabet sheet practice, Zadok and I alternated dictating Thanksgiving themed words for the students (spelling them out one letter at a time). We improvised these words, and the students seemed most interested in understanding and talking about how we celebrate holidays, so we had a mini discussion about different ways of celebrating, and wrote out the necessary vocabulary. Then Zadok dictated the title of the lesson (Friendsgiving), and a Thanksgiving menu. After that we did a variation on the document search, where Zadok showed the students a pumpkin pie recipe on his computer, and we asked them to find phrases from it, and then write them down and practiced pronouncing them. Finally we did a question / answer dictation about our plans for Thanksgiving.

After that students prepared to attend a PTO meeting going on at the school by practicing introducing themselves and telling the names of any children they had attending the school. Grace also helped students practice any specific questions they wanted to ask at the meeting, such as asking whether homework could be given in both English and Spanish. The last third of the class was spent at the meeting using the sentences the students had just learned.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): I had no DJ for this class, so I brought Abdulla to be my assistant. We started with some alphabet sheet work and spent a little time on the name yell and spell because Abdul’s name was new and a bit challenging. I “borrowed” a bunch of ideas for this lesson from the lesson Zadok did the week before that had gone over very well, so I started by playing the first minute of Dolly Parton’s “The Bargain Store” for the students, and then playing it line by line, and having them first try to write out the lyrics on their own, then dictating them, and then trying to figure out the meaning. After that we did a few Round Robin yes/no questions about bargain stores, and finished up by getting out some cash and coins and practicing making change.

After that we did Name Yell and Spell, and then a document search using an Emergency Kit checklist. Next we practiced describing people’s clothing (as an emergency response skill), and went around the table a couple times doing a Round Robin with a question / answer pair, trying to improve our speed. After that Grace split the table into two teams, and gave each team the task of memorizing what one of their team members was wearing, then sending that student out of the room for a minute, during which time their team had to list everything they remembered. After that we did the hot seat activity, where students practiced giving their name, address, and zip code. They practiced first in pairs, and then were called on randomly. Finally we dictated and practiced a sample 911 dialogue.

We worked on writing / pronouncing words and phrases that they found challenging. Then Grace handed out a map labeled with geographic terms for a document search. We got out of our seats for an exercise in locations / commands (“point to North / South / East / West”; “stand next to her”; “sit on top of the table”) and then used those terms with the worksheet from earlier to build on the document search (i.e. “write down the word north of ‘ocean'”)

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): I was originally supposed to DJ but found out last minute that the MC couldn’t make it, so I had to switch roles on the fly. My boyfriend had given me a ride to class and let me use him as an assistant until Katie showed up about halfway through Alphabet Listen and Point. After doing Yell and Spell I asked the students to write out everyone’s names since we had a new assistant, and as we did, one of the students asked why the “a” in Katie is pronounced the way it is. This isn’t the first time my group has asked questions about long and short vowel sounds, so I gave them an impromptu lesson in short and long vowel sounds (hopefully with more illustration than explanation), and then we practiced the guessing the pronunciation of words out of a handful of voter pamphlets using the pronunciation “rules” we had just talked about. Katie and I then dictated some sentences explaining what a swing state is. One of the students had asked to do work with verbs (past tense), so I did an LEA with the students and asked them to try to say one thing in the past, especially about the election if they could (but since I didn’t have a prompt for them I didn’t push it), and we corrected it together and practiced writing and saying it.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Since Grace had just gotten back from Mexico, she started the class with some stories and photos from her trip, and answered questions from the students. Grace then did a dictation with a focus on past tense practice. The dictation included a statement/question pairs, which we used to do a round robin, with each person sharing their own mosquito experiences (“I was bitten by a lot of mosquitoes in Mexico. Have you ever been bitten by a mosquito?) and the class writing each new response. After that, Grace gave the students 3 minutes to work together to write the names of as many animals as they could think of in English. We then helped them correct their spelling and practice pronunciation. One of the students has a son in the Marines who she speaks about often, and he was home on leave last week. He came in to meet us at the end of class, which I know she was very excited about, so that was a special treat.
