What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
Since it was a hot day the MC brought some refreshers, everyone cooled off and then we began class with asking each one of them “how was their day/weekend” (they were all high level students). A student suggested that we focused on Past tense verbs since she and the other students agreed that we should work on it. We had each of them tell a funny/embarrassing story that happened to them in the past and as they told their story we corrected them by saying the proper word and we tied that with yell and spell ex. Laughed, walked, we went.. etc. lastly we had them write down verbs that sounded like “T” and “ED” for example (T) Walked, Talked and Laughed they end with a sound of a “T” another example (ED) Decided ends with the sound of “ED”.August 3, 2016 at 10:41 am #7775Zadok TaylorSpectatorLesson Title: Meet the Candidates

Grace worked with a Cloze activity, though we realized the live action one, though engaging, was difficult to hear. The cartoon version was a little clearer. We also started off without alphabet, talking about monkeys, Bachelorette, etc. She brought food and drink! Also, very composed for a visit from Patrik!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): After alphabet listen and point, Priya had the class do some letter and number dictation practice. Then we watched a video defining some challenging election related vocabulary. We watched it a few times and then Priya asked the students to write down any words they were able to hear in the video. Afterwards, we did a dictation with the vocabulary from the video and had a discussion about the meanings of the words and current political issues. We also did dictation with the issues that we identified. After that we played a game where Priya dictated a list of election vocabulary and another list of definitions and then we had to match them up.

After the usual opening activities, there was a dictation using sentences from a theme-related document.. then a great listen/find activity to practice words that are challenging to this particular learner/group of learners. Next was a document search followed by a super fun 20 questions using images of wild animals. We ended with a short discussion about wild animal backyard encounters. Great class!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Since Grace had just gotten back from Mexico, she started the class with some stories and photos from her trip, and answered questions from the students. Grace then did a dictation with a focus on past tense practice. The dictation included a statement/question pairs, which we used to do a round robin, with each person sharing their own mosquito experiences (“I was bitten by a lot of mosquitoes in Mexico. Have you ever been bitten by a mosquito?) and the class writing each new response. After that, Grace gave the students 3 minutes to work together to write the names of as many animals as they could think of in English. We then helped them correct their spelling and practice pronunciation. One of the students has a son in the Marines who she speaks about often, and he was home on leave last week. He came in to meet us at the end of class, which I know she was very excited about, so that was a special treat.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): I was originally supposed to DJ but found out last minute that the MC couldn’t make it, so I had to switch roles on the fly. My boyfriend had given me a ride to class and let me use him as an assistant until Katie showed up about halfway through Alphabet Listen and Point. After doing Yell and Spell I asked the students to write out everyone’s names since we had a new assistant, and as we did, one of the students asked why the “a” in Katie is pronounced the way it is. This isn’t the first time my group has asked questions about long and short vowel sounds, so I gave them an impromptu lesson in short and long vowel sounds (hopefully with more illustration than explanation), and then we practiced the guessing the pronunciation of words out of a handful of voter pamphlets using the pronunciation “rules” we had just talked about. Katie and I then dictated some sentences explaining what a swing state is. One of the students had asked to do work with verbs (past tense), so I did an LEA with the students and asked them to try to say one thing in the past, especially about the election if they could (but since I didn’t have a prompt for them I didn’t push it), and we corrected it together and practiced writing and saying it.

Nobody showed up tonight. We normally have 2 students that come and they both called me before the class started and said they would not be there. I still went anyway just in case new students came. I waited till 6:30 and when nobody came, I locked up and left. Both of the students said they couldn’t come because they had to work late. They said they will be back on Monday :)

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Grace was stuck in traffic, so I opened the class with a little alphabet sheet practice. When Grace arrived we started a small discussion about ways the students had been practicing language learning outside our lessons, and what difficulties they had faced. We worked on writing / pronouncing words and phrases that they found challenging. Then Grace handed out a map labeled with geographic terms for a document search. We got out of our seats for an exercise in locations / commands (“point to North / South / East / West”; “stand next to her”; “sit on top of the table”) and then used those terms with the worksheet from earlier to build on the document search (i.e. “write down the word north of ‘ocean'”)
