Congrats Gabby on a great final observation class! It was another small class but there was good energy in the room. Gabby had people practice spelling their names quickly; vocabulary such as discount, sale, reduction, cash and credit; document search was creative with a few different activities based on a weekly ad from Freddies. First basic search, then she asked various questions about the ad like “do they sell a keyboard?” Or “what’s the most expensive patio set?” then she had folks pair up and make a shopping list with a $20 budget & report back to the group. It was a fun final class :)

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This was Gabby’s second silent class. We had another small class but it was great.. She used her tablet for a couple activities to look up images of retail jobs & then did vocabulary & this is an apple.. She also brought weekly ads from Freddies for document search & had students call out items. She also had some q & a ideas which turned into a great conversation.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): this was a fun class with lots of conversation & engagement, and it was Gabby’s first silent class. She tried a new technique for silent alphabet with handmade flashcards. She grouped them (aei, bvp, jgy, etc) and would show the card and have Learners say the letter. She sped up to keep it challenging. Next she did “vocab/what’s this” by holding up a kitchen tool (wooden spoon, ice cream scoop), and see if people knew what it was called & wrote it down. We did “this is an apple” and challenged folks with “these are” tools. I was able to assist with teachable pronunciation moment with “ng” sound (straw vs strong). Toward the end of class a random question turned into a great higher level conversation about cooking & families & people even shared photos, etc. Everyone really enjoyed the class, great energy & connection.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We had a new module tonight and Gabby was creative in trying to come up with some new activities. There was a bit of confusion but lots of multi level engagement & laughing. We had a matesol student observing class & he gave some great affirmation at the end of class regarding the techniques used to reduce anxiety (technical term “natural approach”), like using “ready” and “you got it” as well as encouraging participants to get to know each other with name activities.

    The class activities included:
    *Abc listen & point
*Introductions – Gabby asked “what did you do this weekend?” I answered “I went to the beach” then she asked students to pair up and ask each other the questions, write down their answers, and then introduce each other to the group “This is Julie. She went to the beach.”
    *q & a – (dictate & choral response & round robin)
    Do you have a cell? Yes I do/no i don’t.
Do you use internet on your phone? Yes i do/no i don’t.
Do you have unlimited texting? Yes i do/no i don’t.
Do you use any social media? Yes i do. I use(fb, instagram, etc)/no i don’t.
*pair up and create your own question to look up online on your phone. Write the answer. Each pair shared their unique question & answer with the group. (What is the population of portland? What does your name mean? etc)
*texting vocabulary (abbreviation & meaning) – yolo you only live once, omg oh my god, , ttyl talk to you later, lol laugh out loud.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): it was a decent class, but not one of my best. It started slowly with just one person in class at 6pm & the rest arrived by 630. Class included:
    abc listen & point,
    yell & spell,
vocabulary (Avenue, Ave, Street, St, etc), q & a practicing addresses in pairs using the addresses on the scorecards (where is Fred Meyer? 1111 ne 102nd, portland or 97213),
    Document search (trimet map),
    Dialogue
A: excuse me, where is the safeway from here?
B: is easy, just go two more blocks & turn left.
    A: great thanks!
B: sure thing, you can’t miss it.

Without an assistant, I was a little choppy introducing/modeling the dialogue. I asked for volunteers & a couple people of varying levels helped me model for the group. This was challenging because I didn’t expect lower level folks to volunteer, but I guided them through with me once each. it was great because they modeled taking a risk & trying it, and then a higher level student volunteered and we went through again more smoothly.
Overall it was a good class.

Yes I do.” Listen & do (answer, hang up, turn it up/down, etc) and following up with dictation of these actions. Then a dialogue “what kind of phone do you have? It’s a Samsung. Oh, do you like it? I do.”

She also had folks practice reading from it, and asked the advanced learner to translate/explain the meaning to other participants. Then we did a focused 911 dialogue while addressing a participant’s question regarding the difference between said/says, so we designed the dialogue accordingly “911 what’s your emergency? My dad cut his leg, he said it’s bleeding a lot. Ok help is on the way. Please hurry. He says it’s getting worse”. Lots of multi level engagement and laughing.

Very successful class. I taught solo tonight and did my 2nd unprepared class. I truly made it up as I went along, unlike last week when I came without a plan but quickly jotted one down upon arrival at the school. We did ABCs, Names (we did this a couple times to offer additional practice, first names & then last names). Then we did some dictation, practicing abbreviations words and abbreviations, as well as numbers to practice using “point” 3.5, 14.28, etc. Then I asked a higher level learner to help me with dictation. I jotted down a dialogue and we practiced saying it a few times, and then had the class write it down. “What should we measure? We should measure the table. How wide is the table? It is 3.5 feet wide” Then to increase participation, I asked class members “what should we measure?” and let them create ideas. Everyone enjoyed when one member suggested we measure our hair, especially when watching the men try to measure their short haircuts) Fun class!

We shared class prep and presentation. Gabby led ABC listen & point, as well as Name repetition. Julie led the class in vocabulary – long, length, wide, width, pounds, ounces, etc, & dialogue dictation – How tall are you? I am 6 feet tall. How much does the bag of apples weigh? It weighs 4 lbs. Everyone wrote it down, and we went around the room with folks practicing with each other. Then we did a document search with an ad from Walgreens. Folks looked for 16.2 oz, or 2/$5, 18 pack, etc.

Great class, lots of laughing and multi-level engagement. We had 14 students including 3 new folks!
