What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We got a late start due to the very small number of learners that arrived, only two, with five assistants! It was a first time for Anna, Heather and David, whom we welcomed and put to work with lots of “you got it”s. :) Ben admitted he hadn’t prepared a lesson and was going to wing-it. The lesson was titled “taking a break” and we went around the room describing and writing down ways we all take a break (reading, going to the beach, travelling etc.). We then moved to the Deck of Professions and learned the names of several professions before moving to a Listen and Point to the lyrics of Katy Perry’s “Last Friday Night”. After that we watched the video of the song and followed along on the lyric sheet. We finished up class with a TPR led by Colin. Even though the class was off topic and a little scattered, overall there were lots of laughs and as David put it “created a fun environment to learn without fear”.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Today was Mark G.’s “Dress Rehearsal”; Congratulations Mark! First experiences as the MC can always be rough and Mark felt like it was challenging at times, which he stated during Reflection Time. We quickly went through the Alphabet and the Name Y&S, which we could have used a little more time as we had a very new learner. We then went over a Time Card as the lesson was about rest periods and meal breaks. I think Mark was hoping the time card would facilitate discussion on rest periods vs meal breaks and whether or not employers must pay for these times etc. but some of the students were a little confused overall. We then spent the rest of the class time writing down sentences about rest periods and breaks. I suggested to Mark that scripts be written down ahead of time so that they are in a Q&A format and can be practiced around the room or between two people. Overall there were a lot of laughs and the learners took home good information they can use in their workplaces.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We had 8 learners and 4 from PPT; a great ratio! We focused on the “Deck of Professions” for the whole class time. Together we named the Nurse, the Car Salesman and a few others. Joshua had a Q and A dialogue planned where we made up some of the characteristics of each profession, for example – Nurse Rosa is 90 years old and has 3 children :) The class was very fun, great mix of learning levels and we enjoyed having Elizabeth for the first time!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We started on time with 3 learners but grew to 7 by the middle of class. Vocabulary focused on the names of various household products: microwave, television, dining set… We then played a fun game of “The Price is Right” where learners guessed the prices of each item. We then practiced a script where they let a customer service rep know that something was a “rip-off”. All in all a fun class!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Good class overall. Dr. Cheryl Cruz came to observe. We spent a good 20 minutes with the “Professions Deck” passing around the cards while repeating “He is a…, She is a…”. Spent some time practicing a script from an interview question and also did a word-find from a page of interview questions. Ended with a TPR that was a lot of fun!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Not as many learners in this class. Only Pascasio when the 6:15 mark hit, but by 6:30 there were 5. I continued to teach about 16 occupations, but this time added their place of work. We went from learning “This is a Doctor.” to “This is a Doctor, he works in a Hospital.” for all 16 occupations. I discovered a Word Scramble Generator on Google and have used it a couple times, which they really enjoy. All in all a good class.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Class started a little late as usual. I felt the class has a good understanding of vegetables, fruit and other “healthy” items, so I switched it up and taught all about “unhealthy” foods like Pizza, Donuts and Fried Chicken. We continued to practice the difference between “this” and “these” which continues to be a challenge. Overall it was a fun, energetic class with lots of laughing at ourselves and a better understanding of unhealthy food choices.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We always start a little late. The first to arrive were 3 young Cuban men who spoke very little English. Four students were regulars. I taught from the Nutrition module by first going through some vocabulary on the “Nutrition Facts” labels on three different types of foods. We learned how to read the labels and what is “healthy” vs. “unhealthy”.

    What happened:
At 6:05 I had about 3 students and I was concerned that we would run through the lesson too quickly, then 5 minutes later 10 more students showed up! I didn’t have any assistants and the large family of Cubans did not seem to know any English at all as they completely shied away during the Name Spell. Also being in the small room that is usually used for “Homework Club” posed an additional challenge as we used every chair in the room. We ran through the usual beginning activities and aside from the shyness it was successful; I would have liked to have given more attention to the Febles family because I didn’t feel they quite understood the Alphabet, but I felt the other students getting restless so I moved on. The “Shopping” module was a great topic to teach and for them to learn. Working with the Albertson’s coupon flyer wasn’t as useful as I’d hoped but it got them thinking about shopping, different products as well as prices. We spent a lot of time writing down sentences that focused on “bought, buys and buy”. And then wrote down some dialogue between a store employee and a shopper that went over well. Because I didn’t have any assistance I had to utilize the white board and have them copy the sentence (but first I had them spell it to me). Practicing the dialogue between themselves went over well and we ended the evening going over words that dealt with “sales” like “how much”, “percent” and “full price”. Overall the class was a success!
