What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): New learner from last week returned. The learner requested more conversational practice and MC agreed to try if the class continues to be only one learner. MC and DJ suggested she watch videos with the close captioning turned on so she can practice at home too. We were joined by Jaclynn who was a great shadower. Participating in PPT is preparing her for ESL teaching that she has been requested to do with parents of the children who attend the school she works at. Lesson included Nat Geo video of solstice and a document illustrating celestially what the solstice is and a document search as well as the usual dictation, yell and spell, and Round Robin.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): None of the learners showed up. But as requested we kept a presence until 7:30 and during the class time we were visited by several kiddos from the complex. At 7:25 one of the children indicated her mother wanted to come but mom thought the class ended at 6pm. We set her straight and pointed out the flyer o the window for reference. Hopefully next week will include a new learner form the complex. Perhaps a sandwich board could be made to more obviously indicate a class is available and it could be put out when classes are in session.

What happened: This was a dress rehearsal for Zoe. She brought in bundles of herbs from her garden and based the rest of the lesson on these herbs. Her lesson plan included Alphabet, Names, This is Rosemary (which was repeated with other herbs around the table), Dictation. Midway through class there was a fire drill. She handled this well and upon return to the classroom we picked up right where we left off. Class ended on time. She’s a natural and one of the learners commented on how much fun they had and they liked her as an MC. The Lents Community Action Forum printout was used for a document search and provided to each learner.

MC prepared an excursion around the Kelly School area. As we all walked various plants, structures and areas were pointed to and named drawing on new vocabulary as well as past lessons about green streets. Learners enjoyed outing and asked questions about various plants. MC had prepared for this outing by taking a previous walk and writing down what she saw. Ended class by talking about stewardship of green streets and neighborhood.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): The regular Wednesday night learners were there. We were joined by a chocolate cake, made as a thank you for the learners who had brought food over the last few weeks, and a new shadower who was really great . Wednesday night crew is pretty advanced and MC dictated some rather complex sentences. Additional class time involved a document search and two short videos. The subject of tense continued to be a subtle theme. As always a very connected class.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Small class of highly regular Tuesday night learners. MC was asked by one of the learners to spend time during class clarifying present vs. past tense. MC deftly incorporated fulfillment of this request into the lesson plan as appropriate. Lesson focused on the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire and it’s impact on the evolution of workers’ rights. Exercises included a wordsearch, video, dictation, listen and point using an article from the history channel related to the video. One learner brought food which she shared with the class. It was really good.
