What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): All 6 of the ‘regulars’ were there again!! My intention was to start an election theme but I was struggling last night with it so I decided to do a topic that I am familiar with and passionate about. Alternative medicine! I had to start from scratch so it took some planning but it went pretty well and I am excited to expand it. We started with the title and then I asked them to come up with words associated with the theme; they actually didn’t know much about it so I gave them a definition to write down. Then, using some images of common alternative modalities (acupuncture, massage, meditation, chiropractic care, hypnosis) we wrote out some definitions- they did know a few of the terms but not much about them. Also I found that the language used was quite difficult, though it was good listening/writing practice, it seemed to be a bit frustrating so we switched gears to just passing around the pictures and saying short sentences. We then did a cloze acitivty about youth and alt. medicine which they loved. I’m glad I asked at the end if they watched the debate as it made me realize that they don’t know much about the presidential election coming up and weren’t planning on voting! I will plan to start that theme next week and go back to alt medicine after that…

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We reviewed a few things from last week, I switched things up a bit though to make it more challenging; we practiced ‘what do you do’ vs. ‘what are you doing’ for the first 15 miuntes or so. It was clear that all learners will need more practice with this so we will do so again next week.. We then reviewed images of people doing some sort of job (painter, server, chef, etc) and we practiced the verb ‘do’ in various ways- what is he doing vs. what does a painter do? We added in a TRP using the action verbs of the images which really helped to raise the energy. Will plan to continue this theme next week, possibly with some new images or some other way to practice the before-mentioned structures.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): All 6 of the ‘regulars’ were there! The class was similar to the first one, with a bit more focus on pronunciation and instead of asking ‘what is he/she doing’, we practiced the structure ‘what does a ______do’? with regards to the images of people doing their job. A nice sort of review class to get warmed up, tho I will likely add some challenge to the class next week as these ladies are generally more advanced. Good to be back!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):We had a new learner today! And one who comes frequently. It was a great class back; we practiced the verb ‘do’ in different ways and focused a lot on pronunciation and writing which both learners need most. We first talked about what we do for work, then using images of people doing some sort of job (painter, server, chef, etc) we practiced asking ‘what does he/she do’ and then, after realizing the challenges they were having with the difference between ‘what do you do’ and what are you doing, we focused on both structures.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Only 1 learner in class but she got a lot of individualized practice. After the usual opening activities, there was a dictation using sentences from a theme-related document.. then a great listen/find activity to practice words that are challenging to this particular learner/group of learners. Next was a document search followed by a super fun 20 questions using images of wild animals. We ended with a short discussion about wild animal backyard encounters. Great class!

Also for this class we started with a dialogue about going to the market.. We practiced that for a good 15 minutes or so, using our food images to answer the question with. We then practiced using do you prefer ___ or ____ with regards to grocery store vs. farmers market. This was more difficult than I thought it would be; we had to first figure out what ‘prefer’ meant and then review the difference between a supermarket and farmers market. We worked together to get the best practice out of it, and they worked hard!
The last 25 minutes or so, I had them listening to the youtube clip about ‘how to shop at a farmers market’. It was pretty challenging for all, but we got through all the steps and it was great listenting practice.Lesson Title: Are you going to go to the market this weekend?

Started with a dialogue about going to the market.. We practiced that for a good 15 minutes or so, using our food images to answer the question with. This was a nice seguey into the food bingo activity. Learners wrote the name of the food that I showed them, then they played bingo. I wish I had brought in a prize of some sort. The win was a bit uneventful :-/
The last 20 minutes or so, I had them listening to a youtube clip about ‘how to shop at a farmers market’. It was quite challenging for 1 learner, tho the other did pretty good. They listened and wrote what they heard, we only got through about half of the steps, but ultimately great listenting practice.Lesson Title: Did you go to the Farmers Market last weekend?

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Class started on time. They are getting in a great habit of bringing in food from their gardens to class, and it is just so sweet! We practiced with the lesson title and came up with items that we bought at the market – We then talked about the different markets around the area and looked at a document that had pictures of price sheet at some markets. We pracitced with the short dialogue “how much does ___ cost?” with a few different items. We only had about 10 minutes left so I used one of the cards from the Deck of Professions (the farmer) and made up a little story about him that they dictated, then practiced aloud. They also practiced with speed by reading the paragraph as fast as they could. Oh! I can’t forget this… ! One learner made a ‘honeycomb bread’ and brought that in (SO good!) and since we all loved it, we had her give us the recipe – it was a great moment to have her practice her pronunciation and dictation! Lots of good pronunciation practice with this group as well!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Class started late due to learner tardiness; 1 came at 12:45 and we got started right away.. tho the second learner came about 10 minutes later so we got a little held up after catching her up. We practiced with the lesson title and came up with items that we bought at the market – during this activity, it was brought to my attention that 1 learner had a very hard time with hearing the difference between bought/but/boat so we praciticed with that for a few minutes. We then talked about the different markets around the area and looked at a document that had pictures of price sheet at some markets. It was during this that we realized they had a hard time differentiating between beer/beard/bear so we did a listening activity with that. Lots of good listening and pronunciation practice today!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): As class was starting, somehow the word jealousy came up and they wanted to know what it meant so We talked about it briefly and it gave me an idea for the title of the lesson. Originally I had ‘you reap what you sow’ but since we were talking about jealousy, this one was quite fitting ! It was a bit hard for them to understand but I think they got it in the end. We then talked a bit about farmers markets and the things you can buy there. We did the cloze activity and explored the differneces between farmers and super markets. We then reviewed the food vocab quickly and then explored the harvest graph a bit. We ended with a fun speaking activity/memory game; “I’m going to the farmers market this weekend and I’m going to buy…” Images were laid on table and everyone had to remember what the people ahead of them said as well as pick the food they will buy. Fun way to end class!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Only 1 learner again but different one than last week so I essentially repeated last weeks lesson in hopes that next week they will both be there and we can all be on the same page. We did title of todays and then talked about farmers markets ( she goes to one weekly in her neighborhood so she had a lot to say!) We then looked at a list of others farmers markets around the area and then named images of food- mainly fruits and veggies. We explored a graph that sums up the harvest schedule for the pacific NW and ended with a very helpful listening activity using the minimal pairs ‘in, on, an, end, and’.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Pretty similar class to the one before… there were only 3 learners, 2 are on vacation and 1 had to leave work early. But we got some really good focused practice in with a smaller group. We talked about the title of the lesson and then onto dicussing gardening and what we grow in our gardens. I had them practice speaking a lot here by telling the group what the others grow in their gardens. We reviewed the food vocab quickly and then explored the harvest graph a bit. As this group is a bit more advanced, we practiced a more complex dialogue about farmers markets. Similarly to the group 1, the learners are very interested in the content, and one of them is quite the master gardner!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Pretty good class back after a 3 week break, only 1 learner but that’s not that atypical for this group. We talked about the title of the lesson and transitioned nicely into talking about gardening and what we grow in our gardens. We named images of food- mainly fruits and veggies and explored a graph that sums up the harvest schedule for the pacific NW. Ended with a mini dialogue about farmers markets. We will pick up with this topic next week, it seemed as though this learner was very interested in the content, and of course we got some great language practice in :)

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Really good class! All 6 ladies were there.. We began with Heather comiing in to talk about plans for the summer. The learners definitely want to continue the classes, and don’t want much of a break so it was decided that we would start back up on July 13th. This class was farily similar to the 1st class; title of todays lesson and then talked about what the Summer Free For All is all about via a short dialogue. We looked at a schedule with some of these events , and I gave them the link where I found them online. I tried a new game with them but it didn’t go as well as planned; they said they wanted to continue but I knew the other activity I planned would be more fun so while I didn’t fully abandon the activity (I did finish it) I just didn’t carry it as far, which ultimately I think was the best decision. We ended with a version of “I’m going on a camping trip and I’m going to…” except we replaced vocab with action verbs. EX) I’m going to go kayaking, roast marshmellows, etcc.. They loved it! I’ll look forward to going back in July :)

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This was the last class of the 12 week session, and I felt it was pretty good! We started a bit late as learners were a bit late. We began with title of todays lesson and then talked about what the Summer Free For All is all about (free concerts, movies, and various activities at different parks around Portland). We looked at a schedule with some of these events , I wanted to copy them for learners but the copier wasn’t working there so I gave them the link where I found them online. We did some dictation and pronunciation practice and then learned about some camping activities via images and practiced those via a round robin.
