What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We began with writing out a quote about being a nation of immigrants. Learners wrote it, then practiced it, and we talked a bit about what it meant. Then we practiced some short dialogues using the questions; where were you born, where were your children born, and when did you come here?. Great practice! We then talked about reasons people come/flee to the US, they told their stories and then we did a dictation with some of the common reasons. I was so interested to hear their stories, and though I was a little nervous about how it would go, it felt very relaxed and they were more than willing to share. we ended with looking at a timeline of Immigration in America.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): TOTALLY awesome class!!! Phew! It really helped me recover from having no learners the hour before. The theme was the results of the presidential election and it was just smooth, interesting, and real. I kind of already knew how they all felt so it didn’t feel weird or awkward or anything, and I mostly based everything we did on facts. We dictated a couple sentences about how many Americans are feeling, and then some stats realted to Electoral vs. Popular votes. Then we explored a super clear, helpful map that had numbers as well as maps showing the current and historical E. vs. P votes. One learner said, “OHhhh, NOW i get it!” So they pretty much finally understood why Trump won, they were all pretty confused about it. The general feeling was that ‘we don’t like him’, but we’re not that worried. I just left it like that and told them I would update them more about his plans once we know more. We did end with an activity about Thanksgiving to lighten up the mood a bit. Very successful class!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): No learners came today- I thought maybe it was because I cancelled last week and then next week we don’t have class but then I got note that 1 of them called and said she couldn’t make it. Usually there are only 1 or 2 learners anyways, so I am not surprised. And glad that at least one called so I can not feel at fault for cancelling last minute! Of course I feel bad, but I think everyone is allowed a few call in’s every once in a great while when they are sick!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Class started a little late and we were in a different room due to the book fair in the library. In fact, we found out that the class was technically cancelled due to parent teacehr conferences but 1 learner showed up anyways, so we were glad to be there for him! He definitely appreciated the 2:1 attention. We did the usual alphabet, yell and spell and title of todays lesson. Then some dictation related to the concept of upcycling. The learner was very focused and trying very hard to sounds out the words. His literacy levels are low but he did a great job! We laughed together often. Keli showed a quick clip from the documentary ‘Wasteland’ to show how one can make art out of trash. So cool! We did a quick listen/find with minimal paris that are challenging to most learners (in/on/end/an/and) which was very helpful/useful. We ended with a dialogue/pass around of some Dioramas, which is an art form that reuses materials. Overall fun class!

What happened: An ok class. I felt like we did too much surrounding the household products that I brought in, and wished I had switched it up a bit but.. overall, they got some great practice in. We started with the title of the lesson, then ‘this is an apple’ with the cleaning supplies. Since it was a larger group, and the sound on my phone wasn’t great, I didn’t want to do the video as it would’ve been hard to hear. (I intended to use my computer but I found out when I got there that the normal program I use to download youtube videos to the computer, wasn’t working. Since there isn’t an internet connection to use, the only option was my phone). I plan to try to fix it for next week. So, since i didn’t have a ton of material to work with, we did a dictation about what each product is used for. For ex) What is a sponge used for? A sponge is used to…. Dictation progression and round robin for each item felt a little lengthy but we ended with a fun TPR to balance it out :)

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Just 1 learner today so I had to modify but all went smooth and she got lots of attention. We did title, then learned names of some household cleaning products. It was cool- she said about several of the items that she never knew what they were called so when she goes to shop for them, she can’t figure out how to find them. So, she was delighted to learn some new vocab. We ended with watching a video and dictating instruction on how to clean a cutting board with a lemon. Fun!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Class stared a few late as we waited for learners to arrive. Once everyone was situated, we began with alphabet and yell n spell. Next was ‘title of todays lesson’ and then right into ‘this is an apple’ with various household cleaning supplies. It was a little rocky with the varying levels, but overall went pretty smooth. There was a lot of laughter and engagement. We started to work on dictation from a short video about cleaning cutting boards with lemon and salt but didn’t get very far. Class ended with a fun Listen and Do with action verbs realted to cleaning the house. A nice reflection was had between Brooke, Benjamin and Cameron.

What happened: Fun class! We did the title, the a dialogue about trick or treating. Focused a lot on pronunciation with all dictations and dialogue. During the vocabulary/this is a what we used images to practice with this/that/these/those. We spent quite a bit of time doing this, but they really liked it and got some great repetetive practice. We did the same cloze activity as above and with just a few minutes left, ended with a word scramble that was associated with the words in the cloze activity document.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Class started with only 1 leaner- apparently there was a truck blocking the entrance so the 2nd learner was a bit late. We started with title of todays lesson, the did a short dialogue about trick or treating. Next was some vocab/pronunciation practice with images of common symbols of Halloween. Within this, there was banter about some of the images. I learned that one of the ladies had to go to school in a haunted house in her home country because her other school (which was a 1 room school house) got ruined in a wind storm. Pretty interesting what you can find out with a picture! We then did a cloze activity and ended with a “Halloween facts” dictation.

What happened: Only 3 learners today, and energy was a bit low (on my end too!) This topic is tough, and tiring.. the whole thing is tiring! ha. Same issues came up from the first group, hard to pronounce words, with several new and challenging words/definitions. We did pretty much the same thing as group 1; “this is an apple”, vocab word dictation and talked about some deadlines and election day. I made sure to let them know when their ballot must be in, and how to get it where it needs to go safely. One learner said she got her voters’ pamphlet today so we talked a little about that…
We ended with listening to the trump speech from last week but didn’t get far. I do want to do 1 more class with this modules since we haven’t yet explored any of the measures; I would like to at least go over a few of the most important/relevant to them. I may take a break and do a Halloween class next week, and then do 1 more election class the week before the ‘big day’.Lesson Title:

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Class was a bit challenging because of the language related to voting and elections. Though I encouraged learners to not get too focused on meaning, a lot of the words were just straight up hard to pronounce. And there were quite a few phrasal verbs (drop off, take back, etc..) that were new to them. So, we didn’t get very far into the “plan” but I think everyone felt pretty accomplished. And we did the ‘this is an apple activity’ using items involved in the votng process (ballot, drop box, voter registration form, voter pamphlet). I know for sure that one of the 2 are planning to vote; unfortunately, the other one didn’t realize that she had to update her voter registration since her address changed somewhat recently. I am going to look into the website that tells you your registration info to see if I can help her, but I’m afraid it might be too late. On the positive note, now she knows!

What happened: Pretty good class as well; we talked about deadlines and dates for voting in the election this year and then did a listening activity about the 2 party system. I had them fill out a ‘fake’ voter registration card so that they would be comfortable filling out their own if they choose to (we did not talk about who is registered, voting, etc..) But they did all tell me who they do NOT want to be our president ;) we started to watch some short clips- a speech by both candidates about their differing views on immigration but we didn’t get very far. Will defintiely do that next week, they really liked it. And they also loved the cake! :)

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Pretty good class, not bad just not my best. We did a quick review of the topic what do you do, and generally the verb ‘do’, and worked with the past tense a lot. With maybe 20 minutes left, I could have stuck to that topic but somehow the elections came up and It was clearly interesting to them so I decided to do an activity that I did last week with my more advanced group. I wasn’t planning on covering this theme with this particular group as they are a bit lower leveled but since there is interest, I plan to do at least the next 2 classes on elections/voting. I brought cake, they loved it!

What happened: Not my best class, even though I prepared a ton! It was my first time doing this module and there is just so much info out there, I had a hard time making it interesting, the printout that I asked the site coordinator to print, came out really small and so that threw me off. Also, the language was just complicated and I sensed some frustration. I tried my best to just keep is short and simple and it wasn’t all that bad by any means, just not as smooth as I would hope. Alas, I learned from it and have some good ideas brewing for next week. I brought some yummy pumpkin bread to share and ended with a cloze activity (whicH I know they like) so at least they left happy ;)

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Really good class today with little planning! I was pretty occupied with coming up with a good lesson for the 2nd group of learners that I put this on the backburner- interestingly it went better anyways! It was a continuation of the last 2 weeks so that definitely helped.. but also there was a lot of engagement and laughing. We reviewed ‘what do you do’ and then practiced do in the past tense. Next was a short dialogue relevant to the theme- during this I noticed the struggle with in vs. on and so we practiced that for a few minutes. We ended with a review of our images and a fun listen/find to end the class.
