What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Today’s lesson covered emergency prep basics- saying your address, how to prepare and first aid kits. It was the first class back at Irvington and back to the 6pm start time so many learners arrived late. The Irvington principle and vice principle joined in and participated as if they were learners and at the end expressed how much they enjoyed themselves. There was a lot of laughter throughout the class, especially during the first aid kit round robins, and every student personally thanked Benjamin before they left!

We had an Irvington grandfather, David, shadowing the class for the 2nd time. We had 6 learners, but 3 were new learners who did not speak spanish. Lovely family, whose son, Barkat, grinned from ear to ear every time he called his father by his name during dialogue.October 11, 2016 at 9:32 pm #8108Benjamin LostheartSpectatorLesson Title: what to do in an earthquake

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Great class. More learners than last week. New African learners. Zadok used a video technique where he looped the audio of a video and had the learners dictate what was said, and we did this a few times. This was different and engaging. David, a shadower who has attended 5 classes is to contact Zadok, and Patrik to take about officially moving forward with the class. David attached himself to the program from our PTA meetings at Irvington. I spoke with Zadok on what to do if another Person shows up shadowing without signing up first.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Class stared a few late as we waited for learners to arrive. Once everyone was situated, we began with alphabet and yell n spell. Next was ‘title of todays lesson’ and then right into ‘this is an apple’ with various household cleaning supplies. It was a little rocky with the varying levels, but overall went pretty smooth. There was a lot of laughter and engagement. We started to work on dictation from a short video about cleaning cutting boards with lemon and salt but didn’t get very far. Class ended with a fun Listen and Do with action verbs realted to cleaning the house. A nice reflection was had between Brooke, Benjamin and Cameron.

Tonight was David’s dresss rehearsal. He did a great job, particularly in giving immediate feedback to learners. We discussed the need for a little less dictation and more choral response. What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Class started a little late and we were in a different room due to the book fair in the library. In fact, we found out that the class was technically cancelled due to parent teacehr conferences but 1 learner showed up anyways, so we were glad to be there for him! He definitely appreciated the 2:1 attention. We did the usual alphabet, yell and spell and title of todays lesson. Then some dictation related to the concept of upcycling. The learner was very focused and trying very hard to sounds out the words. His literacy levels are low but he did a great job! We laughed together often. Keli showed a quick clip from the documentary ‘Wasteland’ to show how one can make art out of trash. So cool! We did a quick listen/find with minimal paris that are challenging to most learners (in/on/end/an/and) which was very helpful/useful. We ended with a dialogue/pass around of some Dioramas, which is an art form that reuses materials. Overall fun class!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Components of lesson (what’s my name, writing “Today’s lesson is…”, reading aloud, finding words on handout, using props handed around the table for “this is a ….”, listening to video and writing words of speaker, and reading them aloud) flowed well and were balanced in amount of information and intensity. MC kept in mind difficulty level of each learner.

We had a very informative, small and engaged class. The smaller class size allowed for more complicated sentence structure during dialogue. Our learners really appreciated the challenge, which was awesome! -
