What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Similar to the first class, we did a few different activities related to Weather, starting with the title of the lesson and an example to help with meaning. We practiced vocabulary using images and then did a dictation for each sentence. As I have been feeling like I do the ‘this is an apple’ activity, too much for practicing vocab, I decided to switch it up by just dictating sentences about the images. For example; Tornado- The tornado picked up anything in its path; including cars and animals. We practiced pronunciation via this dictation activity and a fun listen/find using the images, where I read a sentence aloud, and had an individual learner point to the image that corresponds with that sentence. Then I said the name of the type of weather and had them read the sentence. It proved to be a fun way to review the topic and end the class!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):Similar to the first class, we did a few different activities related to Valentines starting with the title of the lesson. I learned from the first group, that I wanted to change the order of activities so I did just that; and also added in ‘this is an apple’ while practicing the vocabulary. Then the dictation explaining the symbolism of some of the most common symbols of V-day and practicing of pronunciation via the dictation activity. We then did the ‘history of V-day’ listening activity and ended with the cloze activity to go along with it. While I think some learners liked it, I don’t think they were as into it as the first learner was. Though at the end, some of them did sing along. One thing i learned is that one of the ladies lost her husband about 2 years ago and so love songs and movies, etc are still hard for her. Now that I know this I think I will refrain from bringing in activties that might bring up some painful emotions for her. She misses him a lot and it’s so sad :(

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Pretty much the same class at the first one; just a bit more advanced. we started off with the the lesson title and then the document search. We then dictated several useful/helpful phrases to practice in the event of being questioned by an ICE agent or police officer. We laughed a ton everytime anyone has to say the word search because all of them have a hard time pronouncing this word, it comes out sounding like “church’. We did a ton of repetition with it and several of them were able to pronounce by the end of the class. We did a sentence scramble using the phrases we dictated and practiced those in various ways. They really liked turning statements into questions and especially the phrases that use the irregular verb ‘to be’. I definitely didn’t plan for that but I’m glad I recognized the need for it! We ended with looking at the ‘Know your rights’ card and I gave them information for local legal counseling if they or anyone they know might need it, or just want to have it. Great class!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Super fun class back! We talked about the storm we just had and all thing winter weather related. We did a dialogue, then learned vocab and practiced another short dialogue while passing items around the room. This was followed by a fun crossword puzzle and class ended with a cloze activtiy. They were very enthusiastic and everyone was happy to be back :)

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Similar to the first class with a few modifications. We did the A twist on the title of todays lesson activity, with statistics about the immigrant population in the U.S. and reviewed the same questions that we practiced last week, also great practice for this group. We did the document search/analysis with a list of countries and their respective nationalities and national languages and next was an activity similar to ‘This is an apple’ also using the deck of professions! It was a bit different, more elaborate than the first groups dialogue, and although it started off a bit rocky, once we got the hang out of it, it worked pretty well! We ended with making our own personal timelines and each learner presented theirs to the class. Also a fun class :)

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This class was pretty much the same format as the first one. We began with writing out the quote about being a nation of immigrants and learners wrote it, practiced it, and we talked a bit about what it meant. Then we practiced the questions; where were you born, where were your children born, and when did you come here?. We then talked about the reasons people come/flee to the US, and they also told their stories and then we did the dictation with some of the common reasons. Similar to the first class, everyone was very open and relaxed to share their stories about why they came; almost all of them left their country for the same reason. So interesting and moving to hear! we also ended with looking at the timeline of Immigration in America, and they all said they really liked the topic :)
