What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Today was the last class of the Winter/Spring term and since we’ve talked a lot about weather/climate and related topics over the past 6 weeks, I decided to prepare fun games to review. We did start with a short dictation about Earth day and then reviewed ‘being green’ items from last week. I had both Bingo and Jeapordy ready to play, and though I knew it’d be a little challenging for this group, I went with Jeapordy (modified a bit). And they LOVED it! YAY! We didn’t get to finish but they were super into it, and I look forward to getting more creative with using games in these classes.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Pretty much the same as the first class except I added in 1 extra activity. We did the title and a short dictation that elaborated on it a bit and then brainstormed ways we can help to save the environment via the images/items I brought in. We passed images around and practiced language around the items and then practiced asking eachother ‘Do you recycle, do you garden etc.. ‘ I also did dictation using a couple interesting facts about recycling, that were actually quite eye opening to all of us. http://www.conserve-energy-future.com/various-recycling-facts.php
Next week is the last class for the term so I plan to try to bring a game or 2 in like Jeapordy or something that will review the past few weeks in a fun way. What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Only 1 learner and she was about 15 minutes late so we didn’t get through much of the agenda. We began with the title and a short dictation that elaborated on it a bit. We then brainstormed ways we can help to save the environment. I had images/items of things that represented recycling bins, reusable shopping bag, coffee cup, a garden, turning off appliances, growing your own food, etc.. and came up with short dictations for each. We passed images around and practiced language around the items. we then practiced asking eachother ‘Do you recycle, do you garden etc.. ‘ and the learner was happy to elaborate on the short yes/no response. It was fun! Next week is the last class for the term so I plan to try to bring a game or 2 in like Jeapordy or something that will review the past few weeks in a fun way.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Pretty much the same lesson as the first class with some modifications. We began with the dialogue about the forecast for the weekend weather and then came up with and practiced personalized responses. We reviewed vocab along with definitions and then took the quiz that explored what we learned about the impact of climate change on the environment. As we had more time to spare, I did a cloze type activity via a worksheet that was focused on conditionals. I realized it was a little too complex but we got some good practice out of it. With just a minute to spare, I also asked a few questions about the topic of recycling to find out that not only do they all recycle, they compost too! And one learner even vented her frustration about the kids that come visit her house that don’t seem to realize, or care about , the importance of recycling. Music to my ears! :)

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We began with a short dialogue about the forecast for the weekend weather which was good review. I then had them come up with a response to the last part of the dialogue which, I realized today, is something I don’t do enough! Definitely something I want to incorporate more. We reviewed vocab along with definitions in a couple different ways and then took a fun quiz that wrapped everything up we had been learning about the past 2-3 weeks. We spent the last few minutes talking about recycling as I wanted to get a feel for how much they already know about the topic as the next 2 classes will finally explore solutions to the problem of climate change.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This class was a bit more energized, it generally is as there are usually more learners and the dynamics are just different. After doing the title of the lesson (which brought some good laughs) we reviewed vocab via this is an apple”. We also did dictation with descriptions of the images and were able to get through the whole activity with 10 minutes to spare. We ended with a fun, challenging activity involving review of the images where they got to show off their memory skills :)

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Class was just good. I was sick the night before so was running on low fuel. But I did my best to keep the energy up.. We began with the title of the lesson then reviewed vocab from previous class via images. We did ” this is an apple” to practice vocab and pronunciation and then did dictation with descriptions of the images. This took a good amount of time and since energy was a little low and we were coming to the end of the class I decided to finish off with a fun listening activity involving the images. Will look forward to bringing the energy back up next week and start talking about ‘being green’

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Very similar to the first class with some slight modifications. We practiced the title of the lesson and then reviewed the dialogue about what global warming is and then talked about consequences (melting glaciers, rising sea levels, etc). Next we did a doc search with the word cloud (they really Love these!) and last was learning of the new vocabulary related to global warming. Learners were also very curious to learn the definitions of the words which we will get to next week!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Fun and informative! We delved further into the topic of global warming. We started with a title related to how we’re all feeling right now! We practiced a short dialogue about what global warming is and then searched for words on another word cloud that I found. Next, and last was learning new vocabulary related to global warming with some great images that we printed off. Learners were very curious about the content and are looking forward to next class. Horray!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Same content as the prior class, just switched it up a bit according to overall level of learners. We started with the title, then did a quick review of the weather images we’ve been working with, also working with adjectives describing the weather. Next we did the same doc search using the word cloud about global warming/climate change (they were really into this and we did a lot with pronunciation!) Rather than doing the the cloze activity, we ended with a dialogue and looked at a great graphic image that I had printed out showing the negative consequences of global warming. Fun and informative!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Started with the title, then did a quick review of the weather images we’ve been working with. Then working adjectives, asked “what’s the weather like out there today?” Next we did a doc search using a word cloud about global warming and climate change. Next was a cloze activity about climate change, followed by answering some T/F questions. I might have lost them a bit during that activity but I recovered by ending with a fun listen/find the images, where I said the type of weather and learners had to indicate which one I was referring to.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Same topic, but because this group is more advanced, class was slightly different. We began with the same review of our Weather images and asked what the forecast was going to be for the weekend. We didn’t spend as much time on this but it was good review and tied in so nicely to the rest of the lesson. This group also had never heard of climate change or global warming (though they did seem to understand the basics) We practiced the title of the lesson in a sentence but the concept was a bit deep. So rather than try to explain much, I just swiftly moved them into a doc search with ‘facts about global warming’. It was pretty perfect and I think by the end of that, they were starting to see the direction we’re going. Rather than the word search I used with group 1, i had a crossword that i found online with similar terms related to natural disasters. Almost of all the words were learned last class so it was pretty darn perfect! They definitely enjoyed this activity in particular and I’m excited to delve in deeper over the next few weeks!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): At first there was only 1 learner, the one that wasn’t there last week, so I switched up my plan a bit.. about 20 minutes in, the other came. So I had to switch the plan yet again. I was also starting a new topic within the theme of weather so I had a bunch of activities to choose from and figured I would just piece things together depending on the flow. While I ususally don’t like to go in without more of a solid plan, it actually worked out pretty well. We began with a review of our Weather images and asked what the forecast was going to be for the weekend. We practiced in a few different ways which challenged both of them, but not too much that they were struggling. It was fun! We are going to talk about climate change for the next couple weeks so I was trying to figure out how much they already knew and where to start. Since they really weren’t privy to the topic at all, we didn’t go very deep and only touched the surface of the beginning. I decided to end with a word search that used words associated with global warming/climate change and it found that it was a great way to get started.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Pretty fun class! We practiced the title of the lesson and then the 2 short dialogues related to ‘weather small talk’. We reviewed our Weather images using a different format to practice pronunciation and how to talk about the weather forecast. It was creative and fun, and they were certainly interested in it! Since there were plenty of learners to play Jeapordy, we did! I know they had fun with it, but my questions were too easy for most of them! They even said it was too easy. It threw my poise off a bit, as i wanted to come up with more challenging questions, but it was too hard to think on the fly so I just went with it. I definitely want to try again soon, it was the first time and I guess I underestimated their abilities ! But, still, they all got good speaking practice and for the 2 lower level learners, it was the perfect amount of challenge. It was just fun to switch it up a bit, I know they like game like activities so I am going to try to do more of these.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Just 1 learner today, same as last week which threw me off a bit as I had a jeapordy game planned and was really expecting them to both be there. I planned enough but was really set on that game! We practiced the title of the lesson and then 2 short dialogues related to ‘weather small talk’. We reviewed our Weather images using a different format to practice pronunciation and how to talk about the weather forecast. It was creative and fun! We also worked with some grammar, implicitly of course, by asking what we should do in the event of encountering different types of weather. Lots of writing, which is always good for this particular learner. Hopefully we can play jeapordy next week!
