What happened: We started off with me taking advantage of a great teachable moment regarding compliments! Just as class was about to start, one of the learners told me I look skinny. I know what she meant to say was that it looks like I lost some weight. So I began to tell her that we don’t tell people they look skinny, and gave her an alternative but realized it was useful for all- compliments are huge in this culture! So we began class with practicing with some compliments. It was so great! Next we did the word cloud, which was also really fun. We then moved on to practice with how much/how many, in pretty much the same way we did above, with some modifications to make it a bit more challenging for this group. We didn’t even get to the image definitions but my goal is to start with these next week so we can wrap up this module and talk about summer activities for the last 2 weeks before the break.

What happened: We started off with how much/how many, as this grammar focus fits well with the class theme. Some questions asked were ‘how much sleep do you get every night, how much alcohol do you drink, and how many meals do you eat daily. I also threw in some pronoun practice and this proved to be parcticulralry helpful with the verb do. Nect we did a doc search with a fun word cloud about healty living. I hoped to get through the image definittions but we only had time to get one definition written down. During this activity, one of the learners wrote ‘fling’ instead of ‘flying’ so that was really fun to delve into briefly. They loved that they learned that slang word today; lots of laughter was had ☺

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We started with the title of the lesson and everyone agreed that it’s true; the more one moves their body, the less pain they will have at an older age – we also agreed that probably no one will be pain free but we can at least work towards having less pain by exercising regularly. We reviewed our past tense questions from last week but this time I encouraged them to not look at their notes, and speak from memory. They did pretty good! We worked on writing the definitions of the images that we’re working with. After doing a round robin with definitions, I had everyone ask each other in the present progressive if they had ever been to a chiropractor, had a massage, had acupuncture, etc.. We ended with looking at a list of low cost health clinics where they can get acupuncture and other sort of natural/eastern medicine services.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Since the learner here today wasn’t there last week, and the other that was last week, wasn’t today, I pretty much just used the same content from last week to get them on the same page. Hopefully they will both be there next week so we can move forward together on this topic. Since this learner is still closer to the beginner level, we spent most of the time asking questions in the past tense about how much we slept, what we are this morning, what exercise we did yesterday, etc… We then switched over to a listen/find activity looking at the nutritional properties of certain foods, which she really enjoyed. We only had a few minutes left so we just worked on vocabulary of the natural medicine images I have . Hopefully next week we can work on exploring those more deeply.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We started with the warm up which involved asking questions in the past tense about how much we slept, what we are this morning and what exercise we did yesterday. We did a little extra practice talking about exercise in the past tense since it was clear that all learners were benefitting from it. Next we did the listening activity with the document that was used last week for the cloze activity and then talked about what it means to do everything in moderation. We talked about the difference between western vs. eastern medicine and then started to write down definitions of the types of therapies used in alternative medicine but only got through one and since we only had a few minutes left, we practiced present perfect by asking ‘have you ever.. had a massage? had acupuncture? etc.. this is seemingly quite an intriguing topic for this group :)

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): The good thing about having 2 classes a day with a break in between is that I can learn from the first class what I’d like to do differently (and then I get to bounce off that and simultaneously make the 2nd class of the first group more stellar as well!) So I was able to tweak things a bit and this class definitely came out a little better. We did the title of the lesson then asked eachother the same questions about daily health practices such as ; how much water do you drink daily, how often do you exercise?, how many hours do you sleep, etc.. We didn’t write them down which proved to be good practie for this somewhat more advanced group. We also dictated the tips to healthy living and we compared our answers to the recommendations by health experts. As we had a bit more time, we passed around images of different types of alternative therapies and then we ended with the same cloze activity as above. I look forward to building out this Health/Wellness module over the next few weeks!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): I didn’t leave myself with too much time to prep and since this is a module coming from scratch, I could have prepared a little better. BUT, since I’m nearly an expert in this topic, it wasn’t too hard to wing it. We did the title of the lesson then asked eachother questions about daily health practices such as ; how much water do you drink daily, how often do you exercise?, how many hours do you sleep, etc.. Then I dictated some tips to healthy living and we compared our answers to the recommendations by health experts. To end things off, we did a cloze activity about a study that discussed their findings of teens using alternative medicine. We were all surprised to find out that actually more teens than one would think, use alternative forms of medicine to treat pain, depression, and other ailments commonly experienced by this age group. Oh and one learner told us a funny story about the one time she ever took a bath in her life! So hilarious!

What happened: Energy was a little low today but picked up a bit towards the middle of the class. We started with a final review of the images we’ve been using. I had them identify the objects, then we passed some around and asked eachother about their uses. Then a listen/find with images laid out on the table, they had to identify the item I was describing. Next we played a memory game that I call “I’m going on a camping trip” but can be tailored to any group of images. IT’s always fun and a great memory challenge. After that we played garden bingo and then ended with a short version of the dialouge used above. They wrote down instructions on how to grow certain mushrooms in your window. I told them I would try it and let them know if it works! Nice ending to the class, as they were all interested in this topic.

What happened: As promised to one of the learners last week, I prepared a class about how to grow a garden in your kitchen using leftover veggie scraps. We started with a short dialogue that we practiced together and then although I had a fun infographic that I wanted to use as a guide, it didn’t quite come out the way I was hoping (too hard to see the words). So I had to change the plan a bit which just meant writing the instructions for how to grow certain foods, which proved to be great practice anyways! Class went by fast, and we were all pretty amazed at how much you can do in the windowsill of your home.

What happened: We began with the title of the lesson and then a document search that listed 5 reasons why gardening is good for the soul. Next we practiced a short dialogue, round robin style where everyone told what they love most about gardening. Most everyone said that watching the food grow and then eating it was the best part! We then reviewed vocabulary related to gardening tools using ‘This is an apple’ activity and then reviewed their uses via a listen and point activity. They actually remembered a lot from a few weeks ago when we first learned it all! Nice class back after 2 weeks off :)

What happened: Just 1 learner today.. I had planned a review of the 1st class on gardening that I did a few weeks back but since this learner wasn’t here for that class, and the learner that was there, wasn’t here today, I essentially introduced the new material to this learner today. We didn’t get through all of it, as her skill level is a bit lower, and we took a few minutes to talk about how she can practice English more outside of the class. We learned vocabulary related to gardening tools and then talked about the use of said tools. We will go back to this next week and talk about how to grow a garden out of kitchen scraps!

We then learned the vocabulary realted to the garden (prunes, shears, tiller, trowel, wheel barrow etc..) and they loved it since they use most of the items that we explored, but didn’t know any of the names in English. I then dictated sentences explaining the use of each item and fortunately we did have a little extra time to review, which was a total hit. Great energy, they were happy to be back!

It was unmodified, and therefore a bit challenging but I know this group appreciates the challenge. They also had a blast; we laughed hard a lot! Heather came in to chat with the group and it was decided collectively that we all like the idea of 12 week sessions with a 2 week break in between. So I think this is a pretty solid plan for at least the rest of 2017 :)
