What happened:
Heather at Sherwin, asked that I go over an annual survey that all employees need to complete by early-October so I incorporated this into the plan; most of the class was spent on this.Using the statements provided, I tried to make it as interesting as I could as the material was quite complex. We did a doc seach and focused on more complicated words and concepts. I didn’t get too bogged down on the meanings because these particular learners just don’t have the fluency needed to fully comprehend the meanings. Some were easier than others though and I gave as many examples as I could. One of the learners said something along the lines of ‘It’s ok, I always just usually mark agree for everything’, and kind of laughed about it. (I’m sure she’s not the only one!) I explained that the reason for the survey is to ensure the organization is supporting the employees so they should be as honest as they can. I had them try to turn some of the statements into questions which proved to be a challenge and also had them dictate 2 sentences each to eachother, which was really great practice as they had to work hard on pronunciation and spelling. For the last few minutes, we reviewed our Universe images in a fun way that resulted in a lot of laughing. Learners were reminded that Patrik will be there next week, and then there is a 2 week break.Lesson Title:

What happened:
All learners came, so that made up for last groups no show! I decided to work with the current disaster happening here in Oregon and also touch on the Houston floods and Hurrican Irma. They are all huge disasters and all over the news so it was hard not to plan a class around the topic. We started with a dialogue about the Oregon fires, and practiced that round robin style. We then had a short discussion about it and I found that one of the learners lives near Troutdale and she packed up her important belongings yesterday as instructed. Thankfully, as of 3 pm today, she didn’t have to evacuate! We then moved onto talking about Texas and Florida.. we did a doc search with facts about the Houston floods and then I tried something new where they worked in pairs and one person read a sentence from the document and then the other had to write it down. It was cool to see them work together in this way! We ended just on time after the last learner read their sentence aloud to the group.Lesson Title:

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): No learners today! Usually there are just 2; one of them told me last week that she wouldn’t be able to come this week. The other, she usually comes every other week or so and so she must have had something else come up.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Apparently everyone was tired today as I discovered in the beginning of class. I decided to make sure to keep the energy up the best I could. We started with a quick review of the vocab and then we did ‘This is an apple’ activity as it had been a while since we did it. Lots of laughter during this activity too :) I added in some round robin questions about some of the vocab which helped to make it a bit more interesting; ‘Have you ever used a telescope, have you ever seen a shooting star, and have you ever seen a UFO’. We had fun with the last question. We did a cloze activity about the Kepler telescope and its mission to find life on other planets and then from that asked the question ‘Do you believe in life on other planets’. Super interesting and all but 1 said yes! We then looked at the solar system fact sheet which was good since a few of them were not aware that we had so many other planets in our solar system. Very informative class :)

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We started with a brief review of our vocabulary via images which resulted in a lot of laughter due to pronunciation and forgetfulness on the learners behalves. I always remind them, we are laughing with each other, not at each other and of course, they completely understand this and no feelings are ever hurt. Every once in a while I will reassure them how funny I can sound too sometimes speaking another language by having them each say a word in their language that I repeat and more often than not, they get a good laugh ;) We did some dictation but I could feel the energy getting low so I switched it up by doing a fun listening activity with the images. We ended with a doc search that has some fun/interesting facts about the planets in our solar system.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We started with talking about our experience watching the eclipse and practiced asking eachother follow up questions like ‘where did you watch it? What did you think?’. We then reviewed vocab via images that were presented last week. We only got through definitions of a few of them; spacecraft, meteor showers and UFO but I modified the definitions to make them a bit more challenging. There were some good side conversations and a lot of chatter between learners in their L1 – I’m assuming this was translation; clearly this is a hot topic for all! Since the content was a bit challenging, I decided to stop with dictation and ended with a fun listen/find using the images. Good choice :)

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Just 1 learner and we did a lot of conversation today- more than usual since it was just the 2 of us. I corrected grammar and pronunciation where needed and we talked a lot about all things space related..she seems very intrigued by this topic. We started with talking about out experience watching the eclipse and then reviewed images that were presented last week. We only got through definitions of a few of them; spacecraft, meteor showers and UFO. She had never heard of a UFO; only aliens but she was super fascinated by UFO’s. She told me some interesting stories that seem to be superstitions or myths specific to her culture like ‘if you stare at the shooting stars, someone close to you will die’ and then she was told by her parents that if you look close enough at the moon, you can see a tree that has a woman tied to it. Apparently this woman got sent to the moon because she split up the marriage of a man and woman (my guess is that the moral of the story is do not commit adultery). Interesting to hear these kind of tales! My learner confirmed that she does not believe either and enjoys watching the shooting stars!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Also a good class back! The topic was also very interesting to these learners and although most of them seemed to know quite a bit about it, they too don’t seem very interested in watching it happen. I emphasized how spectacular it will be and its a once in a lifetime kina thing but I guess not everyone feels the same as I! ha ;) Regardless, they were interested in it so that was good :) We did the title, some dictation of facts about the eclipse, a document search and a short dialogue about were we might watch the eclipse. We looked at a cool word cloud that had words related to the universe and then I intoduced some vocabulary that we will explore over the next few weeks. None of them knew what the milky way was so I am excited to use this new theme with them; it will surely be informative and hopefully interesting!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Good class back! We were all a little rusty at first after a 3 week break but after just a few minutes, we got right back into the swing of things. The topic was very interesting to these 2 learners. I started with a few line title of the lesson sort of explaining the eclipse and how rare it is to be able to expereince this in our own state. We did some dictation and a short dialogue about were we might watch the eclipse. Neither learner had yet heard about the eclipse and although both seemed interested and fascinated, it doesn’t seem like they want to try to watch it. One of the learners, from Laos, was told by her elders in the past that she shouldn’t watch any eclipse as it is dangerous and potentially will bring bad things to those who look at it. We talked a little about that and how some people here in the states believe it to be some sort of a sign; some believe its not a good one while others believe it to be the positive beginning of a new era. We shall see! Since the topic of the solar/planetary system is tied into this and I find it to be useful and fascinating, we are going to stick to the general theme of ‘The Universe’ for the next few weeks.

What happened: Pretty much the same class as the one earlier. We started with the memory game but I modified it by having them spell the words that they wrote down out loud- they only got a point if spelled correctly. Next we played bananagrams and it went ok; surprisingly they struggled more than the first group who are less advanced! Particularly one of the learners seemed a bit frustrated but I helped her the most. It went pretty quick with 7 players vs. 3 so we ended with a 20 questions type game which also reviewed the vocabulary. That’s a wrap! We’ll be back at it August 9th.

What happened: Today was the last session of the 12 weeks; we return back in 3 weeks but the folks that help with the classes there were so kind to bring us cupcakes as a little celebration. So I decided to just plan some games; 1 or 2 were vocab review and the other.. .bananagrams! Yikes I had no idea how it would go since I’ve never tried that game in the ESL class but actually it was pretty good! One of the learners did really well, and the other, it wasn’t as hard for her as I thought! I definitely helped them a lot but I could tell they were super into it. We also played a memory game where I laid out a bunch of images that we explored over the 12 weeks. First we reviewed them and then I covered them up and gave them 3 minutes to write down as many as they could remember. Also, they did a pretty good job on this one :)

What happened: We began with the same short dialogue about the weather, and then also brainstormed about summer activities. We reviewed summer activities with images but rather focusing on the past tense, we worked with the modal verb ‘would’. They really got the hang of it after a while! I came up with something on the fly where I had them come up with excuses as to why they couldn’t go camping when asked. We used a few different scenerios and they loved it!

What happened: We started a little late and then Heather came in to chat with us about the next session so we didn’t get through much but the practice we had was quality. We began with a short dialogue about the weather, with a lot of emphasis on pronunciation and intonation. Next we brainstormed about summer activities and reviewed some summer activities with images and then practiced talking in the past tense with said images. With just a few minutes left, we did listen/find with the images which was also a good test of memory!

What happened: We also started off with talking about the fireworks and we all agreed that we don’t like them! Well they are pretty, we decided, but they’re loud and our pets don’t like that. Most of this class was also finishing up working on definitions of images and after each round robin, we also asked things like; ‘Have you ever had a massage?, Have you ever had acupuncture, and Do you use natural medicine? (they all do! and some even use superfoods like Spirulina daily). Love it! During the last 5 minutes I decided to throw in a modal question; “would you ever get acupuncture’ and of course this stumped them a bit and so I told them we would explore this grammar point next week- only implicitly, using examples related to the theme, of course ;)

What happened: Had a nice one-on-one session with J. We talked about the 4th of July/ fireworks via a structured dialogue. We then reviewed the past tense while talking about the last time we exercised, ate a salad, and felt stressed. The rest of the time was spent on the definitions of the alternative medicine images via dictation and choral response. I incorporated some questions throughout this that were generally asking about the learners familiarity with the treatments. Come to find out, her uncle harvested medicinal plants in the jungles of SE Asia when she was a young girl so in fact she probably knows more about plant medicine than I do! It was very cool to hear a little about this :)
