What happened: We did the pest survey/questionnaire in this class as well. This group already did the survey but this time it was modified to work better with our learners. Since they already answered all the questions, I didn’t dictate all of them. They took turns reading questions, and I felt like they all comprehended at least the majority. . we had a good 20 minutes left so we played a card game speaking activity that was really fun!

What happened: We started with the title of the lesson and then talked about the meaning of that. Next we did the activity above where everyone presented information about their ‘pretend’ homes, and we asked questions to eachother to gather more info. We ended with exploring new vocabulary about things that can go wrong at your home, via ‘This is an apple’ activity. We learned some words/phrases that were a little challenging to pronounce like clogged gutters, leaky roof and noisy neighbors. We’ll see if we’ll come back to this topic or just switch it up for the last few weeks before the main Holiday break.

What happened: We did the pest survey for Oregon State University. First we wrote the definition of ‘pest’ and then asked the question ‘Have you ever had an infestation at your house?’. Only 2/5 learners ever did. We did a doc search with the most common household pests and then dove into the survey. I used some supporting images that Patrik sent me but they were on my phone so not very readable. Also, some of it was challenging to work with given the complexity of the questions but we did our best. The last 3 questions were not answered. We ended with a a doc search of the house on Portlandmaps.com, and then a shorter Q/A of the info on the sheet (we didn’t make it to the crime section but I plan to pick up here next week)

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Fun class talking about housing! We first reviewed different types of houses then talked about the type of homes we live in. We learned some new vocabulary and asked eachother questions about our homes, using the structure ‘Does your house have a ____?’. Since this group is a little more advanced, I had them ask eachother follow up questions. It was a little challenging for them but with my support and encouragement, it worked pretty well and was great practice. Through this activity, we talked about the square footage of our homes and some basic descriptions. Class ended with a doc search/fill in of a home features checklist one would use to sell their homes. We will pick up here next week and get more into describing our houses.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Similar to first group with some modifications. We practiced the same short dialogues, some of which I made a little more challenging, grammatically. We then practiced vocabulary and other phrases using the printed images of pumpkins, graveyards, etc.. We talked about haunted houses (none of them have ever been to one!) and the fun fall activities they can do at Sauvies Island. Only one learner was interested in going to a haunted house; hopefully she gets to go this year!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This class was good overall. It flowed really nicely and we got some good impromtu grammar practice in with the verb ‘to do’ which is always a tricky one, and therefore useful to practice! We started with reviewing the types of homes vocab, and then practiced a challenging modal phrase ‘If I could, I would live in a __’. They did really well with it! We reviewed talking about the homes we live in now and then we asked each other about the homes we grew up in. Next we looked at common features of a home and, in a round robin style, asked things like ‘Do you have central heating/a balcony/a good view, etc..?’ Last was a board game that I printed off that also had questions related to housing. It was great speaking practice! Fun class :)

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Similar class to the previous one, with some modifications. We started with the title of the lesson and then looked at/talked about the many different types of homes one can live in. We talked a little bit about our dream homes, and then our actual homes. We dictated and practiced the questions about length of time in pdx, if we own, or rent, etc.. With just a few minutes left, we explored the word cloud from the ‘zoned residential’ module. Will review next week and then delve a bit deeper into the module material. I’m excited to explore this topic, it’s interesting and of course super relevant and useful for all!

What happened:
Very similar to the first class, just a bit more challenging. We first did a doc seach and and with this group, I did delve more into the meanings of statements; especially with 2 of the learners being more advanced, they were able to better comprehend and then translate to the others. I know this was the goal of exploring this in the classroom, so that they can also help other non-native English speakers in the company with the survey. I’m not sure that 1 or 2 classes will really make a huge difference in overall responses of the employees, but, maybe?! They really like the challenge of dictating sentences to each eachother, too. Since it seemed like a good idea in the first group, for the last few minutes, we reviewed our Universe images in a fun way that also resulted in a lot of laughing. These learners were also reminded that Patrik will be there next week, and that there will then be a 2 week break.
