What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Phew I was very thrown off today when I came back from the copy room to see a learner who has come maybe once or twice since I’ve been teaching here, but not my other 2 regulars! It ended up being totally fine of course, but my original plan was completely scratched. Her level is very low so we moved slow and did a lot of repetition. I decided to go with the housing unit word cloud to start off, and she really enjoyed that especially the opportunity to practice her pronunciation. Next we practiced the names of homes that I taught last week to the other group, and again we really focused on pronunciation. We ended with talking about where we live in Portland and did a quick document search of a map of the different neighborhoods in greater Portland. She said she really liked the class and plans to come back next week.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): This class was good overall. It flowed really nicely and we got some good impromtu grammar practice in with the verb ‘to do’ which is always a tricky one, and therefore useful to practice! We started with reviewing the types of homes vocab, and then practiced a challenging modal phrase ‘If I could, I would live in a __’. They did really well with it! We reviewed talking about the homes we live in now and then we asked each other about the homes we grew up in. Next we looked at common features of a home and, in a round robin style, asked things like ‘Do you have central heating/a balcony/a good view, etc..?’ Last was a board game that I printed off that also had questions related to housing. It was great speaking practice! Fun class :)

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Three learners today! Decided to do a Halloween themed class just because :) We practiced some short dialogues, Halloween related and practiced vocabulary and other phrases using printed images of pumpkins, graveyards and other things related to the theme. We ended with a cloze activity and I had learners read some sentences for pronunciation practice. Fun class!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Similar to first group with some modifications. We practiced the same short dialogues, some of which I made a little more challenging, grammatically. We then practiced vocabulary and other phrases using the printed images of pumpkins, graveyards, etc.. We talked about haunted houses (none of them have ever been to one!) and the fun fall activities they can do at Sauvies Island. Only one learner was interested in going to a haunted house; hopefully she gets to go this year!

We reviewed the different types of houses then talked about the type of house we live in. We learned some new vocabulary and asked eachother questions about our homes, using the structure ‘Does your house have a ____?’. This was great speaking/grammar practice. Class ended with me first describing my home in detail; I wanted to hear about theirs but we didn’t get as far as I hoped. We will pick up where we left off next week, after a little review of course :)

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Fun class talking about housing! We first reviewed different types of houses then talked about the type of homes we live in. We learned some new vocabulary and asked eachother questions about our homes, using the structure ‘Does your house have a ____?’. Since this group is a little more advanced, I had them ask eachother follow up questions. It was a little challenging for them but with my support and encouragement, it worked pretty well and was great practice. Through this activity, we talked about the square footage of our homes and some basic descriptions. Class ended with a doc search/fill in of a home features checklist one would use to sell their homes. We will pick up here next week and get more into describing our houses.

We did a super quick review of types of houses then reviewed/practice ‘do you have/does your house have a….I added some extra challenge by having them come up with follow up questions like last week with group 2. We ended that activity with the same questions (does your house have a lot of space? How many square feet?) and they all knew the exact square footage of their homes. I was pretty impressed! Next we looked at a map of pdx neighborhoods and then talked about the neighborhoods we lived in. Last activity was a doc search of a random house on Portlandmaps.com, and then a Q/A of the info on the sheet. They took great interest in the crime section.Date of Class: 11/1/17

Score: 36What happened: We did the pest survey for Oregon State University. First we wrote the definition of ‘pest’ and then asked the question ‘Have you ever had an infestation at your house?’. Only 2/5 learners ever did. We did a doc search with the most common household pests and then dove into the survey. I used some supporting images that Patrik sent me but they were on my phone so not very readable. Also, some of it was challenging to work with given the complexity of the questions but we did our best. The last 3 questions were not answered. We ended with a a doc search of the house on Portlandmaps.com, and then a shorter Q/A of the info on the sheet (we didn’t make it to the crime section but I plan to pick up here next week)

Just 2 learners today; we started with a document search with a home features checklist and then asked questions about the home that was highlighted like; does it have a garage? What are the windows made of? etc.. Next everyone was given cards with info about a home on them (neighborhood, purchase price, year built, etc) and then we all presented our homes. Lots of good vocab and grammar practice. One learner had to leave early and so since I noticed that the other who stayed was having difficulty with larger numbers, we practiced writing and speaking some random amounts that a home in Portland might cost. Score: 36What happened: We started with the title of the lesson and then talked about the meaning of that. Next we did the activity above where everyone presented information about their ‘pretend’ homes, and we asked questions to eachother to gather more info. We ended with exploring new vocabulary about things that can go wrong at your home, via ‘This is an apple’ activity. We learned some words/phrases that were a little challenging to pronounce like clogged gutters, leaky roof and noisy neighbors. We’ll see if we’ll come back to this topic or just switch it up for the last few weeks before the main Holiday break.
