What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Again, it was great having Zadok there as we got to really delve into a dialogue (shortened it a bit for the larger group), and also having him work with half the group and I with the rest was great so they could all have a bit more support. We also learned about some traditional camping activities with some photos that I printed out… Hey- one thing we could really use if they are still willing to spend some money is either a couple tablets or a printer so that we can continue using images for language practice… there’s so much you can do with them, and color is just a game changer in most cases . Food for thought!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Just 1 learner plus Zadok so we got some really good practice in via a dialogue about camping (I don’t do a lot of longer dialogues, as I never have anyone to model with). It took a bit longer than expected but it was good practice all in all.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We began a few minutes early with title of todays lesson, and an example to go along with it. They were having a hard time understanding the meaning but finally got it after a while. We did a quick review of the images from last week (people doing summer activities), and then practiced with the structure ‘Have you ever been..” During this, one learner asked if you can answer it a different way than we had been. I was originally just having them say “yes I have, or No I haven’t but we switched to “No i’ve never been…” and focused just on this structure. It was challenging but good practice. We then practiced camping vocabulary via “this is an apple”. There were fun moments but I get the feeling that they don’t like this activity as much. Maybe it’s been used too much? When you have the same group of learners, I feel like it’s best to get creative so as to not do the same things over and over. I will think of a different game for next time. Regardless, it was still good speaking practice. We only had a few minutes left so I just did a little activity where I described a camping item and they had to guess which one I was describing. it was a pretty good class, but I really want to come up with more fun and diverse activities.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Just 1 learner today, she came late and always leaves early so it was short. We did title of todays lesson, a quick review of the images from last week (people doing summer activities), a document search with the word cloud and then a dialogue that was used last week in group #2, but not this one. That was good practice and we really focused on pronunciation for this one. We then practiced camping vocabulary and also did the game used with group 2 from last week (I”m going on a camping trip) which was also great speaking practice. Good class, but you can really feel the difference when it’s just 1 learner even versus just 2. At least someone is coming, I suppose!

What happened: We had a super fun class today, everyone was in high spirits and I nailed it with the last activity (see below)… Similar to the first class, we started with title of todays lesson, and did a summer activity brainstorm, then a short dialogue using the activities and the structure ‘have you ever been…”. We used the same word cloud for a document search and then practiced with “whats your favorite summertime activity” which led nicely into the next activity which was images to learn camping vocabulary. We ended with a game that I used to play as a kid and as I was planning my lesson this morning I thought about it- kind of similar to some activities I’ve done in the past, definitely a good memory/vocabulary building game. I don’t have a name for it but it’s something like “I’m going on a camping trip and so I will bring….” I said the first item, the next person says my item, then their own.. the 3rd person says the 2 items ahead of theirs, and then their own and so on. They LOVED it!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We began with title of todays lesson, did a ‘summer activity’ brainstorm, then a dialogue using the structure “have you ever been __ ” I had photos of people doing various activities and we asked eachother ‘have you ever been hunting, swimming, biking, etc.” it was interesting to find out how few of these activitites they have done. Also something kind of interesting happened- one learner wrote ‘hores’ instead of horse and kept pronouncing it as the word ‘whores’ so I decided to note the difference between the 2 and focus on pronunciation of ‘horse’. They were very thankful.
We continued with a fun doc search using the word cloud, and then finished with a ‘cloze’ activity about my story of childhood camping.Lesson Title: Oh, you just missed it!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): The class was pretty big compared to last week and all of a sudden there are more teenagers/young adults showing up than I’ve ever seen.. a couple last week and then like more than half this particular class was younger than 21. Very interesting, there were 2 girls who were pretty chatty and I should have moved them but I didn’t. They were responsive when I asked them to be quiet, and I kind of picked on them during one activity when I realized they weren’t paying attention. It was the most classroom management I’ve had to do in a while! Overall class was fine, I had a good mix of levels and higher level learners were very helpful with the others. It’s tough without a DJ to deal with loyalty cards if you don’t know any of the learners, which is the case for me. So I did my best with making sure folks cards got marked off. I may have missed one or 2. But I did get record of everyones names..

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Phew, this class kinda threw me for a loop! I was a little rusty and it’s been a minute since I’ve taught such a low level group! I’d say 7/9 of the learners were at a very beginner level. It was a bit chaotic in the beginning; I was running behind, the room was totally out of order when I got there, there are a ton of cards in the box, etc.. I didn’t have a DJ so I just didn’t have the time to shuffle through the cards. I had everyone write their name on a sheet and I checked off their loyalty cards after they left. There were 2 learners that said they had cards but I could not find them anywhere- I looked thru the stack twice.
Overall, it was a fine class- it took a lot of energy to make sure everyone was on the same page and I’m glad there were 2 sort of assistants there (translators). Writing skills were pretty low so dictations/dialogues took a while but it was good practice for all. We did a ton of choral repetition and a fun TPR to end!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): The library door was locked when I got there, and after waiting and trying to call some key people, I finally found the janitor to let us in. There were 2 learners there when we first got in just before 6. We started with the alphabet and by the end of that activity, I think there were 9 or 10 there. And by the end of the class, all of the 11 who came to the first class last week, were there. Good sign! After yell n spell, we worked with some basic family vocabulary, and a dialogue about how many siblings we have. Off to a great start. The SImpsons family tree activity was a little shaky but I think it was mostly me worrying/wondering if it was boring for them, weird, or they were just having a hard time with it. So I didn’t abandon it, I just modified from pronunciation and listen/find to a writing/dictation activity which really helped a lot. We ended with a quick review of the sibling dialogue and a pretty fun TRP. I’m really glad Benjamin was there, as there is 1 learner in particular who really struggles. We will definitely want to have her next to the most advanced learners in the event that there is no DJ/assistants on a given night.. she really wants to learn!

What happened: Pretty great class, these ladies are just such a fun group to work with! Again, Krysie was introduced and well received. We started off with title of todays lesson and then did the same dialogue that we used with the first group. I could tell energy was a tad low (and I was starting to realy fade) so I had everyone stand up and just kind of shake around and stretch a bit. I decided to go right into ‘this is an apple’ as I know that usually raises the energy. And it did! We practiced a lot with ‘this vs. these’ and they wanted to know why we use ‘a’ in front of flashlight but not duct tape. We went into a little explanation but not too much since it’s grammar heavy. But Krysie may bring in some good examples next week to help them better understand. We went back to the dialogue and practiced that in different ways and then ended with a document search with a ‘how to stay safe in an earthquake’ guide. we didn’t have much time to work with this so we just practiced some pronunciation and vocabulary building. One of the learners brought us roses, it was very sweet! I’ll miss them while I’m gone but I know they are in good hands :)

What happened: Pretty great class! Again, it was really great to have Joshua there and I think he was very well received :) We changed the lesson title a bit and though it was still a bit confusing to the learners, we had fun with it. We also did the same dialogue, just a tad shorter. It was long but again, good practice for all. After they practiced in pairs a few times, we did a document search with an ‘Earthquake Prep kit’ list and then ended with passing around some actual items from the list via the ‘this is an apple’ activity. They really enjoy this activity, as most do ! Again, will look forward to further exploring this topic next week.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We just 1 learner today and we only got through half the plan but the time we did have was spent well. We did the title of todays lesson, some vocab dictation, and a dialogue…It was nice having Joshua there to practice the dialogue with! I wish I would have shortened it but at the same time this learner definitely needed the writing practice so ultimately I think it was a good choice. I look forward to the next class with this module, it’s a good one to work with!

What happened: Pretty decent class, some good writing and speaking practice related to pets. We asked eachother ‘do you have any pets?’ and for the one learner that said yes, I had eveyone come up with 1 question to ask her about her pet. Lots of writing things down, choral repetition, then individual practice during this activity. Then we did a cloze activity about how Americans love their pets and I brought in a family photo that we did for Christmas this year that of course included our dog, luna! They loved it. I also informed this group of the change in teachers and they also seemed totally fine with it. One of them even commented that it’ll be good for them to hear a different voice. But they did say they’ll miss me and hope I come back :)

What happened:
Only 1 leaner again today, she arrived late again, too. 12:45 seems to be the start time of this class even if learners try to get here on time, it seems to be difficult for most. Anyways, I have planned so much for this group over the past many weeks that I haven’t gotten to so I just decided to pull from a previous lesson plan and knowing that most learners can always practice with ordinal numbers, I figured this would be a good one. It was! We did review of ordinals 1st-12th, then a listening activity with several higher random numbers. Next was dictation of addresses around Portland and then practice with an actual map. This learner was informed that there would be a change in teachers starting February 17th. She seemed fine with this news ☺
