What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Much better class, much better energy with 5 learners versus 1. We went over their HW (apparently, they all love doing HW!) and then did ‘title of todays lesson’ with an example. We talked a little about MLK and what his hopes/dreams were, etc.. Then we looked at a timeline and did a Q&A dictation with that (fun!). We ended with a listening/dictation of the ‘I have a dream’ speech. Of course we only got through a few very short paragraphs, and it was pretty hard for them but with some modifications, they did pretty well! Rick came in because he heard the speech on the speakers and was delighted to see that they were ‘learning’ the speech :)

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Well, it was kind of a ‘meh’ class. Only 1 leaner who hasnt been there in a while. It’s weird, I used to never be able to understand her when she spoke- her English is actually pretty good but her pronunciation is not. Somehow we ended up talking for the first 10 minutes or so, well she talked and I listened, and I understood almost everything she dais. Not sure what happened there- I wish I could say it was due to her coming to English classes but I don’t think that’s it. Since she arrived late and they always leave early, and I wasn’t expecting her, I totally didn’t use my plan at all and we just did an MLK cloze activity and then a Q&A dictation related to that article. That was it- not a horrible class by any means, just kind of mediocre.

Patrik joined us for the first half hour of class or so.. how nice it was to have him there! (and someone to do a dialogue with) It’s the one main downfall of teaching solo.. he did great with not taking over, but being super helpful where needed ;)
We began with the title of todays lesson and I gave them a sentence as an example. We didn’t spend too much time there but I think it was good to start with, especially since we’re talking about US culture. We talked about (dictated, choral repetition) New Years resolutions then finished with a cloze activity about Martin Luther King Jr. Day, as well as a sentence scramble to go along with the document. Pretty good overall! Oh, and one of my learners brought me a beautiful scarf from Thailand! Very sweet :)Lesson Title:

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): IT was great to have at least one learner today given that there were none last week! Since her level is pretty low, and I wasn’t sure what the group might be, I came prepared (overly) with 3 different plans. Two of them were lessons I’ve used in the past and 1 was something I came up with recently. Anyways, it was centered around Portland culture, outdoor activity specifically. We ended up looking at some action images of people swimming, biking, hiking, kayaking,etc.. and I introduced her to Sauvie Island via a cloze activity. It was fun and relevant since she has children. I hope she and at least one or 2 others come back next week!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Well it wasn’t the best first day back to a class. Zero learners came to the first session (which is why there isn’t a report for that class), and 2 to the second. It’s hard to not take personally but I’m doing my best! I know there are specific things that it could be, and also, for the 12:30 class, learners have to come to work early which I know is why in general the attendance is lower. Who wants to come to work early?! haha. Anyways, we’ll see what happens next week.
For the class that I did have, it went pretty well. I did feel a little rusty after a few weeks off but the last half was great after we were all warmed up. Teaching about American culture is hard! Mostly because there is SO much you can do with it, I had a hard time focusing on one theme. But since it’s still so close to New Years Day, I decided to work with a cloze activity realted to New Year resolutions, and we explored that topic quite a bit. I think it was a little challenging for the 2 who were there but they did good. I got some things off the internet which I don’t really do but it seemed fair to me in that the materials used were ‘PPT friendly’. They really liked the word scramble and although we only got to 2/10 sentence scrambles, they both told me they really liked that activity. I think I found something else to add to my tool box, and I’m really hoping the rest will be back next week!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): All 5 learners came and we had fun! We began with the title of todays lesson and we talked a little about the meaning of it. We then did “This is an apple” activity except with images of Christmas/holiday things like; tree, wreath, presents, snowman, etc.. We focused a lot on pronunciation. We then did a cloze activity about a traditional American Christmas which was good! After they filled in the blanks, everyone took turns reading aloud, again focuisng a lot on pronunciation. We ended with a little conversation about our holiday plans. They invited me to their holiday Christmas party this weekend which was very sweet of them. Also, I think I will stop doing curriculum votes, they alsways say “It doesn’t matter, we don’t care about the topics”. So, we collectively chose U.S. Culture. I think I’ll just do the same theme for both groups and modify according to levels. It will definitely make my job easier! They all gave me a hug and wished happy holidays. Such a good group!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Only 1 learner today again but we had a solid session together. This particular learner is very dedicated and to be honest, I really like when we have one-on-ones since she really benefits greatly from individual practice. We stareted with alphabet, then did title of Todays lesson. We talked (and dictated) about our holiday plans. I learned about some Mexican traditions in celebrating Christmas. Interesting! Ended with learning some vocabulary related to the Christmas holiday (and I included a Dreidel for good measure ;) She chose U.S. Culture for the next module.. classes will start back up January 6th.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): The first half of class was great! We also talked about Thanksgivings, then reviewed our kitchen vocabulary. I then laid the items on the table and had each learner identify the item I called out (Listen/point). They loved this! Then I wanted to try something new where I had them describe the item while the others guess the item they were describing. I think it was just too advanced for them, even after I gave a few examples, none of them fully seemed to gather what I was asking them to do. So, I just did the desccribing and they called out the name of the item. It was ok. I finally figured out how to get a song downloaded onto my computer wihtout needing wifi so I I figured we would give it a whirl. I don’t know why but it just didn’t turn out so well, I think they are shy about singing together but also I just think that it was too difficult for some of them to follow along. Also, I think just personality wise, they just simply don’t seem to enjoy learning English via music. I don’t know that I will try it again, maybe? Either way, it was worth a try and wasn’t a total fail! ;)

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Fairly solid class today. I thought the beginning of it was going to indicate that it was rockin’ but the last half felt a little sleepy. I know they were all pretty tired (they work at 6 am, and stay after for the class… that’s some serious dedication!). I had them stand up and do a version of TPR but really we just stretched and did a little yoga :) I figured that would help, and I think it did at least somewhat! I think I just really had them working hard, we did a lot of speaking and I focused hard on accuracy. I thought that the ‘This is an apple’ activity would be too easy for them and that they would have already known the kitchen vocab that i introduced but to my surprise, they didn’t! And they Loved the activity! I think I should have just done a song for the 2nd half (I figured out how to do it without wifi!) But I went with ‘what’s a spatula used for’ instead. It was ok, utlimately I think it was just too much about the items in the kitchen. Anyways, we will try the song next class! (Dec. 2nd since there isn’t a class next week). Heather also came in to say that they defintiely want to have me/us back in January!

We warmed up with alphabet and started the lesson and probably at about 12:50, the other 2 came in. We started off with a basic ‘getting to know you dialogue’ and then I had them come up with a dialogue between some people in front of a cafe (used an image). The most advanced learner did most of the work there, but everyone wrote it down then practiced. All in all, it went well, we used a lot of slang so it was a bit challenging at times but good practice regardless!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): It was so great to have all 5 learners back in one class! And I was really excited (and kind of nervous) to finally try a song with them! Since the module is travel, I picked one related to the topic; “Leaving on a Jet Plane”. I planned to connect my computer to my phone via hotspot (it had worked in the past, and it’s just not possible to connect to wi-fi there so it was my only hope that it would work smooth). Of course, when I got there and checked, I was having difficullties connecting. I was nervous at that point as i hadn’t really had a plan b, which is rare for me.. I always have a plan B! I thought of a few alternatives during the break but was determined to make it work.. .and then I realized that I could use the youtube app on my phone! Well, I went to the restroom 5 minutes before class was to start and dropped my phone (in the toilet.! OOPS!) plan b, potentially failed! Thankfully it was a quick splash in clean water ;) and it seemed to be working so I went for it.. it was doing fine, and they were seemingly loving the activity and the song! yes!! Until about half way through the song, with 20 minutes left, the volume stopped working and wawa, that was the end of that. We just practiced the lyrics verbally without the music, thankfully there wasn’t a ton of time where I had to scramble to figure it all out. All in all, it was fine and I think the phone will actually end up being ok! Now I’ll have to figure out how to ensure a reliable source for music next time. I think it’ll be worth it. Next topic, In the Kitchen!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Class went by extremely fast today! We did start a few late and end a few early which is pretty typical of this group but still, we barely got through 1/3rd of the plan. We started off with a minimal pair activity focusing on l/r which was great. We then went on to review saying our addresses which led into a pretty lengthy (but useful) ordinal number activity. One of the learners had no idea how to use ordinals and was actually confused when people would say 1st street or 33rd ave, for example. So we really focused on that for a while then did a quick curriculum vote. With only 5 minutes to spare I quickly went over 2 handouts that I relaly wanted to use with them; one was a visual of what to do in the event of an earthquake and the other was an emergency supply kit handout that I told them to look over and make sure they have the items on the sheet at the home. We will explore small talk for the last 3 classes in this session.

Only 3 learners in this group, all returnees. But, overall a nice class back! Energy was up there till towards the end, I did a doc search with food labels and then a q and a kind of comparing the foods. I don’t know if it was just boring to them, or confusing but it just didn’t flow. Luckily the first ¾ of the class was fun.. we also did the title of todays lesson but I included an example thinking it would help their confusion with the meaning, but it didn’t. Still, we got some good practice with the activity. Then we asked eachother what we ate for breakfast and talked about healthy vs. unhleathy. Also ended with a curriculum vote and they chose Shopping!
