What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): The best thing about today’s group – I started picking up a little Nepali – they were saying this and that and maybe.. so I could hear them say words that I didn’t exactly know what they meant, but I repeated after them and it made them crack up so much (I had to hope that I didn’t say anything offensive!). Technique today was a little flat, but I kept it moving with lots of sentence level dictation and short response questions – focusing mostly on “Is it? “It is” “It isn’t” and then going back to some of the other questions – “Are you?” “Do you?” This was challenging, just on the edge of productive confusion. Ah – I did try something new today.. Skywriting – and I learned that it was ok for just the letters – but even better with me skywriting the letters and they’re trying to spell the word. Interestingly, even if they wrote it down just copying the letters I was writing, it added another dimension of challenge/practice.. normally, I say the word, they try to figure it out.. and I spell if they need it.. here, we spelled it with no sound, and they were trying to construct the sound from it – just like we do with names but there they have the sound of the letter, but not the visual of the letter. I think it would be good to expand this by having them try to say the word of familiar vocabulary without writing it down, so they have to remember, first by saying the letter, then not even saying the letters, but just shouting the word out. Also, this will provide a great set up for the more abstracted sign language forms

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Smallish group, but a really fun class. Very nice to see folks again, there was a table, and that helped a lot. Our was very helpful in getting folks together and adding lots of interesting details about Pacific and machines and engineers. More than half of the group is employed. They are so nice!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): The score came out pretty high, but the class was fairly challenging. I gave myself pretty high score on poise because we had a large level range, one learner who really struggles, and another learner (relatively high skill) come in 45 minutes late – he was new, but as an older Russian speaker, I was a little worried that he would be critical, but he seemed interested and likely to come back. Another regular seemed less likely to continue coming. Graham fit right in!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Whew! tired today, with setting the clock forward and a late night at work. I had to push to get it going, but they were all ready to go, and I could definitely see the engagement and the learning paying off… I see piece of grammar structure, like it’s starting to stick. And there’s more work to do!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Today seemed like it was tough to get going. two regulars there at the beginning, then a familiar face which was nice. Then a new learner, and she was really shy, and I couldn’t get everyone else to help each other.. not quite sure why.. they seemed confused by my urging to work together, and a little frustrated at times. There is a lot of awesome content to work with with cell phones, though, and that’s exciting, and by the end, the new person seemed much more comfortable. Part of it might be that Monday morning, everyone has been speaking their own native language and takes a little bit to warm up. One of the regulars asked if we would end classes in March, and seemed happy that we would continue.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): only one returning learner, plus an old friend.. three facilitators. We kept it rolling talking about snow and being cold. It was ok, a little disappointing that there were so few folks, but we chalk it up to confusion in the aftermath of the winter storm.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Very cold day probably contributed to low turnout.. Many assistants, most of them new; several new learners. The principal and one of the new teachers had an altercation, and he left very upset. A number of things were not coming together, and the learners trickled in – Lisa was a little late, too (and brought cookies). Still, there was a really good magical feeling afterwards, so success!
