Dictation and read aloud about different types of squash. One high level learner attended who helped mid level learners around him. One low level learner struggled to participate in activities and keep up with others. It was challenging to integrate her with other students; seating arrangements could have been better i.e. seating her inbetween two higher level learners. Read aloud went on a little too long, but ended well because higher level learner was able to perform the same task that facilitators were.Cameron CovalSpectatorLesson Title: Happy New Year!

Dictation and round robin phrases like did you celebrate on New Year’s eve? do you have a New Year’s resolution.Dictation: what did you do on New Year’s eve? What is your New Year’s resolution. Learners told me in Spanish what they did on New Years and what their resolution is. We dictated each learners’ response (in English) and then asked each learner individually, they responded with their own unique answers.
Learners expressed their desire for classes to continue at HB Lee with me as their instructor–they said they’ve learned more with me than from other teachers; I believe part of what they really like is the PPT model compared to the traditional ESL model. Learners also expressed interest in having more than one class a week on evenings at HB Lee.

Eight learners in attendance today, mostly lower level; two learners were young children and two other learners had special needs. Dictation included prices (e.g. $15.50) and common grocery items. Learners raced to solve a word search; first three to finish won chocolate. The younger learners were hyper and disruptive throughout the class; Ramin helped keep them in control with the promise of chocolate and a TPR activity that got everyone out of their seats.Cameron CovalSpectatorLesson Title: Is school closed today?

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
Two mid/lower level learners today. They are regular attendees and sisters, so connection was high. They are fairly timid learners, so it is often difficult for me to push them to pronunciate. But with only them in class today I felt much more comfortable getting them to repeat words more often and pushing them to pronounce things correctly. We covered material around snow days, delays, and closures. Learners read the Reynolds School District winter closure/delay protocol aloud, played here it is with an Oregonian article about the winter storms last year, and played this is a what with pictures of tire chains, slushy sidewalks, a snow plow, and a snowstorm or blizzard.Cameron CovalSpectatorLesson Title: Keeping Warm This Winter

Three lower level learners in attendance, with two young children which made class very hectic, made the listening and pronunciation activities difficult. Kaidi shadowed and was able to get the kids to calm down and draw with colored pencils, which allowed us to get back on track. We did this is a what with jacket, scarf, beanie hat, sweatshirt, sweatpants, pajamas. Played round robin with questions like Do you like hot cocoa? Have you been to the clothing closet? Read aloud and played here it is with flyer for a toy exchange and coat giveaway.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
Four Spanish speakers in attendance. We dictated colloquial phrases about pest control and home remedies. Eventually we did round robin with all of dictation so that learners had small conversations with each other. We also made a list of common pests and pest control methods/products. Learners were all familiar with pesticides and home remedies for pest control, so the content was relevant to them. I arrived just a few minutes before 6pm, so my preparation could have been better. That said, I was fairly poised throughout the class; I improvised the whole lesson plan and it turned out well.Cameron CovalSpectatorLesson Title: Pest control

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
Patrik dictated survey questions about pest control – who does it where learners live, how many pest encounters, how learners access pest control information. Learners responded to questions by raising their hand or not; Patrik tallied the results. The Q&A format kept the energy up among learners. Learners showing up late and leaving early posed some challenges. Also, there were several learners in attendance today (large for RWL tuesday evening standards); fortunately, Chelsea and Lucas were shadowing and provided extra support and reinforcement.Cameron CovalSpectatorLesson Title: There’s an election coming up.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
Two lower level learners and one mid level learner in attendance today. All learners are fairly timid/quiet, so class energy/engagement was lower today than previous classes (choral “ready” was consistently weak and learners didn’t laugh as much today as in previous classes; but that’s not to say things were uncomfortable or went poorly, just more chill than most classes). We watched Drop, Cover, Hold On! earthquake response video; played Here it is with a FEMA emergency checklist; played this is a what with pictures of firefighters, police officers, and paramedics; read aloud summaries of three disaster relief orgs (FEMA, American Red Cross, American Black Cross); and ended class with a word search with emergency preparedness vocab. -
