What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
Jacob was late so I led the alphabet listen and point and dictated two sentences around fall/autumn and changing leaves. Jacob dictated sentences about state representatives and senators, did round robins with representatives’ names. One learner consistently called another learner by the wrong name, which appeared to bother the latter learner. It was not clear whether the learner was using the wrong name on purpose as a joke or by mistake.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
Relatively lower level learners in attendance today. Dictation went fairly slowly and learners were shy/quiet when reading aloud. Matt and I pushed learners to be louder a few times; though we could/should have pushed a little more. Learners brought homemade tamales and pasta salad to share while completing an emergency preparedness listen and point and a word search.Cameron CovalSpectatorLesson Title: Birds around the World

All lower level learners in attendance today. Dictation was fairly complex so it took learners a while to complete. Fortunately, with only three learners in attendance Deborah and I were able to provide more individualized support to learners. Learners completed a worksheet where they identified 25 different types of birds, then played here it is. One learner yelled out, “I love birds” and seemed to really enjoy the activities with the bird worksheet.Cameron CovalSpectatorLesson Title: Having a Potluck with Friends

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific):
Mostly lower level learners in attendance today. Somewhat frustrating class for me because dictation and “this is a what” took longer than I had expected; there was more side talk than normal today; and learners werent quite as focused as they normally are.
I’ve been trying to challenge learners more. The lowest level learner struggled today with dictation and reading aloud, more than she normally does. I tried to demonstrate higher expectations without appearing too frustrated. I’ve noticed that even when key words are repeated frequently throughout the lesson plan and in dictation, many of the spanish speaking learners do not refer back to handouts or what they have already written to figure out how to spell the word correctly. Im trying to think of activities that demonstrate that I’m looking for learners to connect the dots and use the information I’ve already provided them to figure out the next question. Any and all suggestions welcome!

Three new learners today. One other learner came in for about 10 minutes and left. He told me he was looking for a higher level class. I referred him to Talk Time at Rockwood lib.

Small class today, all mid to low level learners in attendance. Smaller class size allowed me to pay more attention to these learners. Sometimes with larger classes I can’t give these three learners as much attention as they need to keep up with the rest of class without relying on copying. Today I was able to push these learners to do more repetitions and to pronounce words more clearly. I feel like my alphabet technique is improving, I am now able to maintain a rhythm and speed up the triplets enough to make the activity fun and challenging. Talked about spices today, also read about how many common spices originated in the Spice Islands in SE Asia and were brought across the Eurasian continent to N. Africa, the Mediterranean, Western Europe, and eventually the Americas. Was cool to include content in lesson plan about items and history that are relevant to learners’ home countries.Cameron CovalSpectatorLesson Title: A Game of Skill and Strategy

Small class today, one upper level learner and one mid level learner in attendance. Lesson plan was heavy on dictation about the rules of checkers, but the dictation went well because small class size allowed Robert and me to pay a lot of attention to both learners; also the mid level learner was able to look onto the paper of the upper level learner. Listen and do helped bring energy back to class after dictation. Learners ended class by playing a complete game of checkers against each other. Learners referred to the rules they wrote in dictation, so lesson and game built upon each other.

Fun class today. I tried to incorporate some of the things Ramin and I talked about and what Zadock noted in the Monday Curriculum email for September i.e. make the activities challenging, faster, and game-like. I think my alphabet listen and point technique has improved since observing Ramin–I say triplets faster and after a while ask learners to say the triplets aloud several times with increasing speed. I’ve tried to push learners a little more than I have in the past to properly pronounce letters and words, especially B’s and V’s and Th’s (given many spanish-speakers in HB Lee class). Ramin gave me ideas for more engaging activities, so I’ve used less dictation in my lesson plans and more “This is a what,” “here it is,” “round robin,” “listen and do,” and memory games. These activities have made class seem to go by more quickly and smoothly compared to my earlier lesson plans that were heavy on the dictation side. Something new I tried today– we read through an apple pie recipe, watched a video that showed how to make the recipe, then learners read each step aloud and watched the video of the narrator performing that particular step. I think today’s class was one of my stronger classes because I was well prepared with an engaging lesson plan and tried out some of the techniques and activities I observed from Ramin.Cameron CovalSpectatorLesson Title: Let’s Explore Portland

My first coaching experience tonight. Ramin brought a lot of energy and enthusiasm. Ramin spent more time than I usually do on the alphabet warm up. He used a lot of repetition and tempo changes to make it fun–learners laughed a lot despite being frustrated/challenged. Ramin asked learners to say triplets and quadruplets aloud individually. I plan to incorporate his technique from now on.
Dictation focused on numbers that are used in addresses and used lots of 5s (1505, 2507, 2505). Ramin knew Spanish-speaking learners would struggle with 5s. Listen and do with North, South, East, West directionals. I enjoyed seeing that activity performed with something other than action verbs. Talked to Ramin and I spoke after class about other game-like activities that I can incorporate moving forward.Cameron CovalSpectatorLesson Title: Senior advisor Jared Kushner

All higher level learners in attendance today. Dictation content was advanced but fit well with learner levels. Dictated five facts about Jared Kushner, each learner read each sentence aloud at least twice. Robert also asked learners to try to say the sentences aloud without looking at what they had written. I liked that task and plan to implement it when I MC.Cameron CovalSpectatorLesson Title: Can you give me directions?

-Higher level learners in attendance today, including 3 young learners. I included less dictation and more activities like Here it Is, This is a What, Listen and Do, and a map activity. Given higher level learners in attendance, more dictation probably would have gone over smoothly. But I believe the learners appreciated the balance I struck today between dictation and more engaging activities. One of the younger learners towards the ends of class said “this is fun.”Cameron CovalSpectatorLesson Title: Supporting our neighbors in Rockwood

Large class today with five school-aged learners. Used a lot of contractions in dictation (What are, what’re; I do not, I don’t) and then in round robin. Showed a video about Charlotte, played “this is a what?” with pictures of protestors, white supremacists, refugees, and political violence in the US, and here it is with 8/20 walk with immigrants and refugees flyer. These activities helped break up the dictation better this week so learners stayed more engaged and confident (with too much dictation some of the lowest and highest level learners appear to disengage, be bored, start side conversations, etc)Cameron CovalSpectatorLesson Title: Secretary Ben Carson

Two new learners today that I know from the community. Two elementary school-aged learners and one younger non-participant. The youngest child was a bit of a distraction throughout class, especially towards the end. Though learners seemed to enjoy having the two other kids in class (learners smiled a lot, laughed when interacting with the kids). Dictation content was a bit too difficult for the average learner level so Gustavo and I wrote down the dictation for lower level learners to copy and keep up. Learners seemed to enjoy “Here it Is” and “This is a what?” activities the most (as mentioned above, lots of smiles and laughter when interacting with the kids).

Good turnout today given the high temperatures. Highest level learners were not in attendance. Content was focused on identifying the Rockwood neighborhood and nearby community/public centers. Several child learners in attendance today; they all participated just like the adults. They continue to make the activities fun for myself and the learners (lots of smiles and laughter). A group of learners made a point of thanking me for my patience with them (I imagine because higher level learners were not in attendance so dictation went a bit slower). I noticed that one lower level learner did not keep up with all of the dictation today. I should have moved the highest level learner next to her, but its an example of when I would benefit from having a DJ. I’ll work on recruiting one.
