What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): With just 2 learners, we got a lot of good focused practice in. I had to do a little something for V-day since it was the next day so we learned a few idioms related to love (love you to pieces, blind date, finding Mr.Right). They got a kick out of it! Then we used a word cloud to find words related to love.. they asked the meaning for several of them. After that we reviewed our images related to mental health and then practiced ‘she is depressed vs. she has depression’. Really great grammar practice there and one of them noted that it was very helpful. Lastly we used sentence strips to match to the images, which was so great! Very good class all around :)

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): The new learner, X, came back, thought she was a little late. Then another new learner came! However, he said he probably won’t come much as he is very busy and it’s hard for him to come to work early (this group has to come 1.5 hours early for their shift if they want to come to class). Regardless it was nice to have him in class as they are work friends so felt comfortable working with eachother. We mostly reviewed ‘getting to know you’ type questions from last week, and worked a lot with the alphabet as X really needs practice with that.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): I didn’t have much time to prepare so I kinda winged it which I don’t usually do but I realize I’m getting better at it! We reviewed things from last week in different ways and since I’ve been wanting to explore the topic of mental health with this group, I transitioned into that by having them write down (via dictation) the most common mental health disorders. Then J told the rest of the group about her grandson that has autism. We will delve further in to this topic next week and the couple following.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): I wrote a nice summary on the attendance form but it disappeared. So, in short, we reviewed and then expanded on the theme of ‘specialized doctors’ in various ways- lots of pronunciation, speaking and a fun dialogue at the end. Overall a great class :)

Great class!! I inititally wanted to prepare a 4 week module on mental health but then I decided to first do sort of ‘At the Doctor; part 2’ where we talk about the many different kinds of doctors (specialists) and the reasons we would go to see them, etc…
We started with a picture story where I had them describe the story as a group. I had never done this and will definitely be doing it again, with a bit more structure. It was sort of a warm up to get them thinking about the topic, and was so relevant because the guy in the picture couldn’t speak English very well and therefore was confused upon leaving the Dr. office. They all could relate and we talked a bit about this. They all now get translators in their doctor appointments but they said even then, sometimes they leave with some uncertainty. We practiced a few short dialogues via round robin and then brainstormed ‘reasons to go to a doctor’ which transitioned so nicely into talking about the different specialist doctors. We learned the names for optomotrist, cardiologist, gyno, dermatologist, etc.. via images. The pronunciation of most of the words was really hard for them so we practiced a lot with that. We ended with a fun listen/find with the images where I said the generic/general name of the doctor (skin doctor, eye doc, brain doc, etc..) and they had to point and then say the technical name for each. Then I described my symptom or issue I was having and they had to tell me which doctor I should go see. So fun!

In this group we actually did talk about the shutdown. First, we just did dictation with a short paragraph about the topic- learners wrote it down and then practiced speaking/pronunciation. We asked eachother via round robin ‘Are you or anyone you know currently affected by the shutdown’? Then we did a cloze activity that went into the details of why this is occurring. With visuals, we learned about government services currently affected and who might be greatly affected if the shutdown continues. We ended with a word scramble activity with vocabulary learned throughout the class. It seemed as though learners were very interested in the topic, and I wasn’t surprised that they all knew at least a little bit about it prior to the class.

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Daniel started with the alphabet and yell n spell then went right into the title of todays lesson. Next was a dictation about recycling aluminum; learners wrote it down then we did choral repetition. Next was a listen/find using a document related to the topic and leaners enjoyed repeating many of the words/phrases. With a bit of time left, we talked about our holiday travel plans.. seems like everyone will be cooking/eating and spending time with family! :)
