What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We started with finishing the dialogue we started from last week- two learners weren’t there last week so I had the other 2 help them with the part of the dialogue that we had already written down. It was pretty cool to watch them be the ‘teachers’ and I could feel the sense empowerment happening, particularly in one of them :) The dialogue was long and a bit complex so took a little longer than I hoped but it was good. At the end of it, they got to sort of choose their reply, like a ‘what would you do’ if you were given the option to either vaccinate your child or pay $1,000 for not doing it (like the Mayor of NYC is proposing). It was interesting to see what each one chose!
Next we learned the names and symptoms of some of the most common diseases that Americans get vaccinated for and worked with the images in a variety of ways to wrap up the class. Good class!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We practiced English around the topic of vaccinations, mostly regarding the debate or ‘Vaccine War’. We did a sort of cloze/find the right article activity on the board, explored a word cloud with lots of good related vocab and then a listen/find, dictation, reading activity with an article about more specifics surrounding the debate. We ended with a short dialogue about the state of emergency declared last week in NYC. Great class :)

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Nice class back after a 3 week break- there were 5 learners! Pretty rad. I am excited to explore the topic of vaccinations over the next few weeks. We first did the title of the lesson and I tried to gather how much they knew/know about the current measles outbreak- interestingly, none of them knew about it. But, also none of them have small children so that is certainly a factor. We looked at a graph and a fact sheet, dictated some facts as well as some mini dialogues. We learned the word ‘contagious’ and practiced a funny round robin dialogue with that. Look forward to digging in deeper next week :)

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): As it was our last class before a 2 week break and I didn’t want to start a new theme, I just prepared a review/fun n games type class. We focused on simple past tense and the verb ‘Do’ and then played 20 questions. It was our first time doing that and while it had challenges, it went fairly well- we laughed a ton! All in all fun class :) Then heather and I discussed the plan for the next few months…

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): It was an ok class- I planned but it just didn’t flow that well or just felt too unstructured. Which I think is sometimes fine with this group and I know they were interested in the topic which was ‘Medical Marijuana’. I knew it was ok to ‘go there’ especially after a side conversation a few weeks back when I learned that one particular learner goes to a store in her neighborhood to buy a topical pain relief oil. We did start with some dictation and round robin type q/a (have you been to a dispensary yet?) but then after that it was more discussion/casual conversation which I think made it feel so unstructured. However, it worked especially knowing that because they all speak the same language and were able to translate for the lowest level learner, no one was left out. Overall, good content, decent class and they were very interested to learn that you can use medicinal marijuana and not get ‘high’ or ‘stoned’ (yep, they all knew those words!)

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Really good class today- just the energy, dynamics, all of it. Plus we got to talk to a learner that recently retired on FaceTime! She called one of the other learners from Laos and we all got to say hello. It was so great! We spent the majority of the class talking about the ‘Opiod Crisis’ here in the U.S.. I subscribe to a website called ESL Library that has lots of cool themed lesson plans with various activities and I found some good materials there to use. We learned vocabulary like; fentanly, addictive, laced, stigma, overdose, etc.. and one learner mentioned that she has heard or seen a lot of the words and never knew what they meant so she was glad to have learned them today. It was definitely an interesting topic to them and I’m glad we ‘went there’. I think a lot of teachers feel a little weird/uncomfortable talking about things like drugs in the classroom- myself included, until today..I found out that it’s totally fine! And they want to know more about the things they are hearing on the news and in their communities. It was really awesome, actually :)

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We worked together on completing a picture story about a woman who is exeperiencing depression. We then turned that story into the past tense…I learned today that in their language, the verb doesn’t change for the past so for example they would just say ‘Yesterday, I eat noodles’. So interesting! We then reviewed our vocabulary from last week and then learned about the opiod crisis in the U.S. They actually know more about this subject than I thought. This also led into a great conversation about the benefits of medical marijuana for pain relief :)
