What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We wrapped up the theme of Local Flora today with some review of the last few weeks. We reviewed mushroom and flower names, and practiced asking each other if we have seen certain types of flowers. Then we talked about our favorites… boy do they love their flowers! We also practiced the sentence ‘Is it/are they edible’ which was super fun(ny). They have a hard time with the beginning part of the questions ‘is it’ (they say ‘it is’ a lot instead) so I like to practice this often with them. Lots of laughter and fun for the last class before a 2 week break!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We began with a little dialogue about the heatwave and then asked eachother if we have Air conditioning at our homes. We then did a super quick review with our mushrooms and then moved onto learning about some other plants local to Oregon/the Pacific NW. First we explored a native plant poster via a document search and we talked about plants that we recognized there. Then we focused on a few of these plants (mostly berries and flowers) and practiced this/that/these/those. Next and last we used those plants to practice another short dialogue round robin style. Lots of speaking practice today, their mouths were tired!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We reviewed our mushrooms and then did a quick review of a dialogue we practiced last week. This led into a structured dialogue about the taste of mushrooms which then led to a focus on the primary categories of taste. (mushrooms fall into one that I didn’t know about called, Umami). We then learned some common words commonly used in describing food and practiced by describing different foods. A bit of a stray from the main theme but very useful and relevant, as one learner in particular noted :)

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Super good class today! We had lots of fun talking about mushrooms. We reviewed our photos from last week and asked eachother which mushrooms we’ve tried and if we liked them or not. We practiced various short dialogues and then we watched a youtube video about mushroom hunting for the Matsutake. We realized that we all love mushrooms!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We wrapped up the last topic of inventions by playing the bingo game from last week that we didn’t get to finish. We then practiced a little dialogue about which futuristic invention we would buy if we could (money not a factor). We then transitioned into the next topic, Local Flora starting with a word cloud where we learned several new vocab words. They really love the word clouds :) We focused on mushrooms that are native to Oregon and learned the names of about 5-6 of them and talked a little bit about which ones we’ve tried and our favorites of those. Will pick up where we left off next week..

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): The title isn’t related to the theme but since I wasn’t feeling very great yesterday I decided to let them know that by making it the title of the lesson (and it’s a useful expression :) We also learned a few other expressions about feelings like ‘happy as a clam’, ‘down in the dumps’. We then moved into the topic of ‘Futuristic Inventions’ where we learned about things like; google glass, jetpacks, 3D printers, multicopters and self-driving cars. Super fun! We didn’t get very far as the main activity involved learners getting a card with a description of an item and they had to read it to the group who were instructed to write it down. It took quite some time to just get through 2 of them and I felt a little frustration coming from the lower level learners so I transitioned into a game of Bingo for the last bit of class. I think that was a great plan :)

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): All 5 learners came today- they were all a bit tired as they have all been working overtime so it was a little challenging to get the energy up but I did my best! We reviewed a bit from last week, practiced some past, and passive tense in relation to the topic. We did a fun variation of ‘This is an apple’ where we learned dates of some of the most important inventions of time. Then we did a listening activity around the main uses of these inventions. Though the energy was low, it turned out to be a pretty good class :)

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): We stated a new theme- Inventions! I think it’s super fascinating and I think they do too. We started with a title to introduce the topic then asked eachother ‘what’s one thing you can’t live without’? This was a little more complicated than I thought but I gave some examples and then they caught on. The goal was to help them realize how important certain things are to our life that we may take for granted or just not even think about much (lightbulb, refrigerator, wheel, etc…) We then looked at a bunch of images of the most ‘famous’ inventions of all time and I had them try to put them in chronological order. They did pretty good and even learned some new words! Next we used a worksheet I found online that used the passive tense to talk about inventions- pretty useful and relevant :) With just a few minutes left I had them practice this tense with the images on the table i.e., “Which was invented first; the wheel or the airplane? It was quite a good class, I must say :)
