What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Only the 1 learner came that is working towards her citizenship. She had written out questions that ask more about personal life vs. the civics one we had been practicing. Most of the class was spent reviewing those and I had a video ready to watch on youtube that had simulated interviews. We watched/discussed that for the last 15 minutes and it was perfect that all the questions in this interview were the personal type ones that we had just practiced! Good stuff :)

All 6 learners came again today and it was the last class with this theme and also before a 2 week break. We first reviewed the names/images of the 6 women/artists and then did a cloze activity that I made up which introduced the basics about the last 3 women we hadn’t yet learned about. Pronunciation was practiced by reading the sentences from the cloze and next was a review of what each woman was famous for via a listen/point with the images. We then wrote short sentences about all of them and that was a wrap! I brought in brownies, another learner brought in banana bread so we had some nice treats to share during class. As they were leaving, one learner told me that she’s starting to feel more confident speaking out in the real world and feels like people are finally starting to understand her! All 6 learners came again today and it’s clear that they are really into this theme. It’s a fun theme to practice their English with, and I can tell they really like learning about all these great powerful women from all around the world :) Again, as we were about to start I noticed that a few of them were reviewing the info we wrote down about Malala so I began with that and then went into a podcast with transcript all about her. We then reviewed the highlighted vocabulary of that document and then wrote down the most impt facts about her. We reviewed names of all the other women mentioned over the past few weeks and then wrote short sentences about all of them. I ended with a listen/find with all of the images that was super fun. They love the memory type activities! Since next week is the last class before a short break, we will have to learn about the last 3 women all in one class- will be hard to do but we’ll make it work. Some said they only want a week break, others said two and sounds like we will finalize that next week.Lesson Title:

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): As promised, I came with materials to help the learners prepare for their citizenship tests. I didn’t prepare much at all, as I kind of figured just the one would show up and I know she just wants me to read her the questions so she can practice responding. And that’s exactly what happened! I did add in a listen/find with a map of the US which helped to spice it up a bit. She has memorized the answers to all 100 questions on the test, and only forgot 2! I was very impressed and she left proud and happy :)

All 6 learners came again today and it was fun! As we were about to start I noticed that a few of them were reviewing the names of the influential women that were introduced last week. So I began with review of the images of these women. We then reviewed the info we learned about Maya Angelou, and after that moved onto Rosa Parks. We listened to a short podcast and they read along with a transcript. I then dictated some questions off of that document and we did round robin Q&A. Next, to raise the energy a bit I did a fun listening activity with the images laid on the table. I asked who they wanted to learn about next and there was a strong interest in Malala Yousafzai. We didn’t have a ton of time left but we did a short dictation about her background and will pick up there next week. I love that they are so interested in this theme because I am too :)Lesson Title:

One was pretty much on time, but the other who wanted to work on citizenship stuff wasn’t there so I went ahead and stuck with the theme of the month. We started with a cloze activity about International Women’s Day and then I began to dictate some sentences about women’s rights. The 2nd learner came in about 30 minutes late and since we had already started working with this theme I didn’t feel it was fair to switch. BUT the cool thing is that we found out that the other learner is also studying for the citizenship test and she wants to practice the material as well. So, we have a plan for next week!

All 6 learners came today and it was a pretty great class! I did start with a short dictation about the national school walkout today since it is such a huge topic and all over the news. Interestingly, none of them knew it was happening! So we spent about the first 15 minutes talking about it and then I showed them some video and images of the protest. They were very receptive/interested and I hope they went home and watched the news as I suggested. We moved into the chosen theme of the next 4 weeks with a dictation about IWD and then a cloze activity which summarized the history of it. I then showed images of 6 influential/famous women and we wrote down their names and passed them around. I decided to just focus on one today; Maya Angelou. They learned a bit about her and then listened and read along to a poem. They loved it! I look forward to exploring this theme the next couple weeks and I think they do too :)Lesson Title:

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): One learner came today about 20 minutes late.. she asked if we could practice citizenship questions since she is taking the test in about a month. She had them all written out and just wanted me to quiz her and practice pronunciation. She clearly had been studying the answers as she knew almost all of them (we worked with about 20). The focus was definitely pronunciation and we worked hard! I was happy to help her with this and told her if its just her next week, we can work with this topic again since it’s very specific to her needs.

This was a pretty awesome class! We started on time with just 1 learner, the lowest level of the group. At the start of class she told Sofia that she wasn’t at the class last night because she was sick. From this conversation (sofia speaks a little French so was able to find out a little more), we realized that this learner didn’t know the names of body parts so after alphabet practice, we began with that. The other 2 learners came after about the 2nd body part and though they already knew most of the names of everything, there were a few they didn’t know and it was also good review. We did some fun TPR and then moved onto the theme of the class. I had a lot planned but we just did dictation/choral response with the title of the class and then a cloze activity about IWD. I was so excited to work with a poem by Maya Angelou and happy that we were able to get to it. The best part about it was that in the poem, many body parts were mentioned that we had just learned. I had listened to the poem a few times earlier and didn’t even think about it but It was SO amazing. I think everyone agreed :)Lesson Title: Prevention is the best medicine

We began with the title, and also discussed the meaning a bit and then went right into the article ‘How to live to 114′ as I really wanted to do the final activity associated with that.. and we did it! It was fun, and took up the rest of the class. There was a lot of side discussions, all relevant to the topic. We finished the chart, then dictated some sentences with choral response following. We matched sentence strips to images and then asked each other several questions related to health and wellness. Great topic for this group of ladies! Although I thought this might be the last day of the Aging theme, I miiight just do one more class as I had a few more activity ideas that I wanted to try out with them. What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): One learner came today! Since she hadn’t been in the past few weeks, I decided to modify my plan a bit. We started with the title and discussed the meaning. Next we did a listen/find with the aging word cloud and then a cloze activity about research on aging, examining twins. Through this I found out that this learner actually has a lot of twins in her family; Two of her sisters were twins (one passed away at age 2), her brother has 2 twins, and her brother-in-law is a twin. Fascinating! So of course we talked about that a bit, I was so curious!
Next we did a document search with the article ‘How to live to 114, (in theory’) and then I dictated some sentences from that, and turned some into questions that we practiced. Fun/interesting class!Lesson Title: Fountain of Youth

We are still on the topic of aging (or prevention of it, I suppose) and today started with a title about the fountain of youth led. It was actually pretty long so we had lots to practice with as far as pronunciation and vocabulary building. I’m still not quite sure they got the concept but I think the cloze activity that we did after that, helped a bit. They were definitely intrigued by the concept and we also practiced asking eachother ‘Do you use anti-aging products?’. Turns out (not surprisingly, we all do!)
We went back to our ‘How to live to 114, (in theory’) document and learners again worked in pairs to dictate sentences to eachother. I had a fun activity to go along with that that we didn’t get to so we will continue there next week.Lesson Title:

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Unfortunately no learners came today again.. class was cancelled last week but essentially this is the 2nd week in a row. I think it’s time to check in with Rick and Heather and see what we should do or find out if they know when J (the learner that was always guaranteed to be there) might be able to come back to class. I think Rick said sometime in the spring. And I’m sure one of the 2 learners will come back next week- usually at least one of them shows up- but I guess how many classes in a row with 0 learners before the company decides it’s not worth keeping that slot open..? The 2nd group always has good attendance and are very motivated, so I just hope this doesn’t affect them!

What happened (as short or as long as you like, but be specific): Class went really well today! Lots of engagement. We started with a focused discussion about Valentines day. I dictated a statement about how some Americans believe that V-day is just another hallmark holiday and then we watched a short youtube video that delved into that a bit but was still clear/simple enough for them to follow. Then we talked about whether we agreed or not, all learners agreed and said they don’t celebrate the holiday. I just wanted to touch on the topic since it was the actual day and you can’t go to any store without it in your face!
We moved back into our topic of aging by first going back to the word cloud from last week. Two of the learners weren’t there last week so it was an introduction for them and a review for the others. During this, the topic of retirement came up so we talked briefly about that and they are all looking forward to the day they can retire… most of them have been there 20+ years! Next we looked at a document titled ‘How to live to 114, (in theory’. There were short little paragraphs that focused on specific habits/lifestyle changes you can make to live longer. I had them work in pairs to dictate sentences to eachother- we had done this in the past and though its a bit challenging, they all really like the challenge.
